Catherine Russell bracht onlangs haar vierde album uit sinds ze een tien jaar geleden besloot om solo te gaan zingen .... In 2004, ze was toen 48 jaar jong, besloot ze het roer drastisch om te gooien en niet langer in achtergrondkoortje te wilen optreden, letterlijk verscholen, achter grote namen als David Bowie en Paul Simon. In 2006 bracht ze haar eerste soloplaat uit, eenvoudigweg getiteld Cat, gevolgd door Sentimental Streak (2008) en Inside This Heart of Mine.  Haar vierde album  is genoemd Strictly Romancin' en bevat een veertiental nummers, begeleid door haar vaste kwartet, dat bestaat uit Matt Munisteri (gitaar en banjo) - Mark Shane (piano) -  Lee Hudson (bas) en Mark McLean (slagwerk) en aantal gastspelers - Een beleidingsgroep, die weet hoe te swingen .....

Catherine Russell groeide op in een muzikale gezin, dat haar wortels in de jazzscene van de jaren dertig had. Pa was immers de beroemde bandleider Luis Russell en dit vind je dan ook in alle recensie breed uitgemeten, dus ga ik Luis Russell's wapenfeiten hier niet nog een keer herkauwen.  Over haar moeder, Carline Ray, weten de meesten niet meer te vertellen dat ze gitarist was in de populaire damesband uit de jaren veertig: The  International Sweethearts of Rhythm.

Later ging ze bas spelen en zat in het achtergrondkoortje van Hammond B14 virtuoos Jimmy Smith, en speelde in bands als die van Red Richard en Ruth Brown. Deze droom ging in vervulling op dit album.  Het gospelnummer He's All I Need vind je terug als een-na-laatste nummer op dit album en Catherine zingt hier dit fraaie nummer uit het repertoire van Sister Rosetta Tharpe, met haar moeder Carline Ray. Caterine laat zich in dit album inspireren door vocalisten uit de jaren dertig en veertig, zoals bijvoorbeeld Mary Lou Williams, waarmee haar moeder nog opgetreden heeft begin jaren zeventig en ze Mary Lou haar met het nummer Satchel Mouth Baby!, dat Mary Lou met haar Chosen Five opname in maart 1944 voor Asch.

Je vindt een kort interview met Catherine in het volgende fragment waarin ze vertelt over wat en wie haar inspireerde voor dit fraaie album.

Het album bevat standards, zoals I'm in the Mood for Love en No More, ooit gezongen door Billie Holiday in de jaren veertig en composities, zoals het gedateerde Dixielandnummer, Everybody Loves My Baby, dat ik iedereen zou afraden op te nemen, maar juist onder de handen van Catherine Russell en haar band aan een nieuw leven begint, alsof het nummer vanmorgen gecomponeerd werd. Dit is, volgens mij, de kracht van Catherine Russell, die zich in haar repertoire keuze niet laat leiden door de veilige ankerpunten uit het The All American Songbook, maar terug durft te grijpen naar nummers, die in de tijd dat haar vader furore maakte, bekend waren en ze thuis vaak gehoord zal hebben. Hiermee bereikt ze een grote groep vergeten jazzfans mee.

De generatie, die opgroeide met swingmuziek en deze muziek allen nog maar door professionals kan horen spelen op krakende langspeelplaten, vind in Catherine Russell een jazzvocaliste, zoals die er nog maar zelden te horen zijn in ons land met dit soort muziek. Het nummer Everybody Loves My Baby is daar op dit album zo'n goed voorbeeld van, net als Fats Waller's nummer We The People, Struttin' with Some Barbecue of Kitchen Man, die ze op haar eerdere albums zong ......

Eén van mijn favoriete nummers op haar laatste album is I'm Checkin' Out, Goom' Bye, oorspronkelijk een nummer gezongen door Ivie Anderson, waarin de goede luisteraars tijdens de eerste maten een kort maar fascinerend dialoogje kan horen tussen Catherine en trombonist John Allred. Luister maar eens naar deze vrij onbekende compositie van Billy Strayhorn:
Ik hoorde Catherine tijdens een kort optreden in de Middelburgse boekhandel en platenwinkel The Drvkkery in oktober 2010, samen met haar vaste pianist Mark Shane en daar pakte ze me volledig in met haar stem, haar charisma en haar repertoire, dat in haar handen herboren werd .......

Catherine Russell gooide zo'n kleine tien jaar geleden drastisch het roer om en begon aan een solocarriere als jazzzangeres, na tientallen jaren in achtergrondkoortjes van beroemde popsterren gezongen te hebben. Opgegroeid in een gezin, waar de traditionele jazz en swing elke dag te horen was, werd ze gefasineerd door jazzzangeressen als Ivie Anderson, Mary Lou Williams of Abbey Lincoln ..... Onlangs verscheen haar vierde album: Strictly Romancin', een swingende plaat, die een grote groep (vergeten) jazzfans zal boeien. Keep (it) Swinging wijst graag op dit soort platen, die hun wortels in de klassieke jazz en swing hebben, zonder die klakkeloos te imiteren. .. Recently Catherine Russell released her fourth album since she decided to go solo .... In 2004, then 48 years young, she decided to stop as a background vocalist behind great names like David Bowie and Paul Simon and to change course. In 2006 she released her first solo album, simply entitled Cat, followed by Sentimental Streak (2008) and Inside This Heart of Mine.  Her fourth album is entitled Strictly Romancin' and contains more then a dozen songs, accompanied by her regular quartet, which includes Matt Munisteri (guitar and banjo) - Mark Shane (piano) -  Lee Hudson (double bass) and Mark McLean (drums) and several guest players.

Catherine Russell was born and raised in a musical family, which had its roots in the jazz scene of the 1930s. In most reviews you can read about her roots, about the fact that her father was the well known band leader Luis Russell, is discussed detailed, so I won't  stir up that ..... Her mother, Carline Ray, however, was a guitar player in bands like the 1940s International Sweethearts of Rhythm.

Catherine tells, that she dreamed to play a duet with her mother, who was one of the members of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm in the 1940s (she was the guitar player); Later she took the double bass and recorded with Jimmy Smith, and performed in bands with Red Richard and Ruth Brown. This dream came true in her latest album; He's All I Need is a traditional gospel, sung and dedicated to Sister Rosetta Tharpe.  The great vocalist Mary Lou Williams, another singer that inspired Catherine to make this album, did work with her mother during the early 1970s; Catherine honoured her in the great tune: Satchel Mouth Baby!, which was recorded by Mary Lou and her Chosen Five in March 1944 for Asch.

The album contains standards, like I'm in the Mood for Love and No More, sung by Billie Holiday during the 1940s and compositions like the dated Dixieland tune Everybody Loves My Baby, which changes into the hands of Catherine into a fresh new tune, as if it was composed yesterday. This is, i.m.o., the strength of Catherine Russell selected repertoire and her surplus value, that makes her so popular to a forgotten group of jazz fans.

The generation,that was raised in a time when swing was popular music, ruminates the records from the past and seldom hear these songs played by a new generation of musicians, who play these famous standards as if they were written yesterday, instead of (half) a century ago .... The way Catherine sings Everybody Loves My Baby is a good example ... it gives the same sensation as in the 1920s the flapper wifes must have had when they heard these words for the very first time ......... When my baby kisses me upon my rosy cheeks, I have to let those kisses be. Don't wash my face for weeks .....

One of my favorites is her swinging version of I'm Checkin' Out, Goom' Bye, originally sung by Ivie Anderson, which contains a small, but great dialogue between the vocalist and John Allred on trombone. Love to share with you part of this great rather unknown Strayhorn composition:

In de laatste week van 2010 konden de bezoekers van de Keep Swinging blog zich uitspreken over hun meest favoriete Keep Swinging blog van het jaar. Er waren er 12 voorgeselecteerd: vandaag de uitslag.

Rond deze tijd van het jaar is het lijstjestijd en blikken we terug en vooruit in het nieuwe jaar. De drie onderwerpen, die als meest populair werden verkozen, vind je hieronder. Ik ontving ook, zoals gevraagd, een aantal blogs die niet genomineerd waren. Zo werden onderwerpen over Oscar Alemán gemist en wilde Harry graag de bijdrage: De Ramblers: Bijdragen uit het naoorlogse Brussel vermeld zien!

1. Sweet Hollywaiians: Tropische klanken in grijs en mistig Belsele

De Japanse stringband The Sweet Hollywaiians bezocht begin 2010 Europa voor een korte tour. Eén van hun concerten stond gepland in 't Ey in Belsele, een dorp bij Sint Niklaas (België) op 23 januari 2010. Even was dit Vlaamse dorp het tropisch middelpunt van de aarde. Het volgende filmpje geeft een indruk van het concert.

De legendarische en aantrekkelijke zangeres uit de jaren twintig en dertig, stond in de schijnwerpers in een tweetal blogs: Annette Hanshaw.

3. Catherine Russell warmt een kil en nat Middelburg op Catherine Russell: te horen op Nederlandse podia

Op 23 oktober 2010 trad Catherine Russell, dochter van bandleider Luis Russell, kort op in de Drvkkery in Middelburg als opmaat voor haar Nederlandse tournee. Ze trad ook op in Vrije Geluiden, het populaire muziekprograma van de VPRO:

Ik probeerde voor mezelf een lijstje te maken met de concerten die op mij de meeste indruk gemaakt hadden en daar kwam het concert van de Sweet Hollywaiians ook in voor. Maar ook het afscheidsconcert van Hein Van de Geyn in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen en het Eerbetoon aan de muziek van Django met Fapy Lafertin-Koen De Cauter-Joep Peeters en hun Jazz Manouche. Verder was ik onder de indruk van Al di Meola in Middelburg en het Rick Margitza - Ivan Paduart Trio in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen.

Elke jazzliefhebber weet dat het gebeurt op het podium, tijdens concerten. Maar weinig optredens blijven echter hangen in het eigen of collectief geheugen en dat is jammer. Ik merkte dit ooit toen ik een concert van de Art Blakey Jazz Messengers in De Doelen, dat op mij 30 jaar geleden veel indruk had gemaakt, wilde traceren - slechts een paar regels in een Rotterdamse krant, gewijd aan dit optreden restte. De Keep Swinging blog, waarin concerten beschreven worden, is, zo hoorde ik, voor sommigen een prima naslagwerk waar informatie over concerten en bezettingen terug te vinden zijn en bewaard worden. Je vindt dan ook, behalve recensies van concerten, ook een lijst met bezochte concerten, inclusief foto's en bezettingen.

Het Nederlandse Jazzblad Jazzism kijkt in haar laatste nummer terug met een artikel genaamd Toppers & Dompers 2010. Een discutabele lijst met zaken die positief in het nieuws waren of dingen waar we afscheid van hebben moeten nemen, zoals de plotselinge dood van Solomon Burke of het afscheid van Hein Van de Geyn. Het feit dat één van de belangrijkste jazzspeciaalzaken in Rotterdam, IT-records, begin vorig jaar de deuren moest sluiten, verontrust me, maar ook de aangekondigde bezuinigingen van 25% op het budget van cultuursubsidies. Ik ben bang dat dit ook het begin kan zijn van het sluiten van een aantal kleinere jazzpodia overal in het land ............Een dramatische verschraling van het culturele aanbod. Ook bladen als Jazzism en Jazz lijken niet te ontkomen aan een deal met de commercie - door in hun onderwerpkeuze een zo groot mogelijk publiek te willen plezieren. Gelukkig wordt er minimaal één keer per uitgave aandacht besteed aan de grootten uit de jazz ( zoals het artikel van Bert Vuijsje over Lennie Tristano in het laatste nummer van Jazzism.), maar net als in dat handjevol platenzaken dat nog overleeft, wordt de bak "Jazz" wel heel erg mager. Wat een verschil, overigens, met een blad als het Jazz Bulletin van het MCN ( Muziek Centrum Nederland (afd. Jazz) - het voormalige Nederlands Jazz Archief), dat hier aan niet aan mee doet, maar de breed georiënteerde jazzliefhebber over de Nederlandse Jazz informeert op een hoog niveau. Houwen zo! En een blad als het Doctor Jazz Magazine is het niveau van amateurisme al jarenlang ontstegen onder leiding van hoofdredacteur Ben Kragting jr.

Keep Swinging hoopt dat jazz ook in 2011 je leven mag verrijken: Arbeidsvitaminen.

Dit jaar, 2011, bestaat de Keep Swinging blog vijf jaar - in februari 2006 gestart met een kort berichtje in het Engels, werd het al snel een dagelijkse blog over jazz- en jazzgerelateerde muziek. nu is het ontwikkeld tot een twee-talige blog met zo'n 140.000 bezoekers per jaar. This time of the year lends itselfs to look back and to make plans for the future. In the previous period you could vote for your most popular blog for 2010 and the results are listed below. I received a few additions from visitors who missed their blog in the selection I nominated. Well, they are right. The Japanese String Band The Sweet Hollywaiians visited Europe early 2010. One of the concerts was scheduled in 't Ey in Belsele, a small village near Sint Niklaas (Belgium) 23rd of January, 2010. Love to share with you some fragments of that concert.

On the 23rd of October 2010 Catherine Russell gave an in-store concert at The Drvkkery bookshop in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, as a start of her Dutch tour.

I made myself a list of the best and most impressive concerts for 2010. It is good to see that the Sweet Hollywaiians is in your list of Best Blogs 2010 too. Other favorite concerts where the Farewell concert by Hein Van de Geyn and an Homage to Django by Le Manouche anno 2010, as Joep Peeters, the leader of the Fapy Lafertin-Koen De Cauter-Joep Peeters and the Jazz Manouche. The two others were Al di Meola in Middelburg and the Rick Margitza - Ivan Paduart Trio in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen.
Everybody knows that it's hard to remember the impact or importance of the passed concerts after some months - most details have been forgotten and for me it is important that I safe the information of the concerts I've joined in my list of concerts for 2010 and the Keep Swinging blog reviews and photos I published in the blog.

The Dutch Jazz Magazine Jazzism looks back with an article entitled Toppers & Dompers 2010. Domper can best translated as Damper. A rather debatable list of things that seem to go well and things we have to take leave of, like the sudden death of Solomon Burke or the farewell of Hein Van de Geyn. The fact that one of the leading record stores in Rotterdam, IT-records, closed its doors a year ago, worries me too, but what about the story of remains of glue that make the "Miles Davis - The Complete Columbia Album Collection" ( 70 records (!~) almost unplayable. This great box is out of reach for most of us. What really worries me is the fact that the new government of The Netherlands wants to reduce the culture budget with 25 percent. I'm afraid that this will be the end for dozens of small jazz clubs all around the country. A dramatic decrease for the cultural diversity.

Hope Jazz can make for you life easier this year: enjoy my suggestion for 2011.

Op een gure en regenachtige zaterdagmiddag in oktober weet de Amerikaanse jazzzangeres Catherine Russell een warme sfeer te creëren bij een vijftigtal bezoekers in De Drvkkery in Middelburg. Where am I? (= Waar ben ik?) Middelburg? Okay, Hi Middelburg, it's great to be here. (= Middelburg? Hoi Middelburg, goed om hier te zijn). Thank you for coming.(= Leuk dat jullie d'r zijn). If we have this weather in New York City, nobody would have come ............ (= Als we nu in New York gespeeld zouden hebben met dit weer dan was er niemand op af gekomen). Thank you for that !! (= Bedankt hiervoor!!). In de muziekafdeling van de boekhandel De Drvkkery was een zgn in-shop concert georganiseerd door de platenmaatschappij Harmonia Mundi en de Drvkkery als opmaat voor een uitgebreide tour door zangeres Catherine Russell door Nederland langs theaters en clubs.

Tijdens het korte concert zong Catherine een zestal nummers. Ze begon met We The People, m'n favoriet, bekend door de uitvoering van Fats Waller, maar zelden nog gespeeld. Het is één van de nummers, die te vinden zijn op haar nieuwste album Inside This Heart of Mine.

Mark Shane, pianist, die haar begeleidt tijdens de tour en ook te horen is op haar laatste plaat, vertelde me dat hij dit soort stride pianonummers uit de jaren twintig en dertig, zoals vastgelegd door Fats Waller en James P. Johnson, erg graag laat horen. These tunes don't belong in a museum, it shouldn't be handled like museum pieces - it are great compositions, still worth playing. (= Dit soort nummers hoort niet in het museum, het zijn geen museumstukken, het zijn schitterende composities, die het uitvoeren nog steeds meer dan waard zijn), vertelde hij me. Catherine heette haar publiek hartelijk welkom en richtte haar enthousiasme vooral op de jeugd, die de eerste rij in bezit had genomen. Ze waren er even beduusd van, al die aandacht en dan ook nog in een vreemde taal...... Ze zegt Hallo tegen jullie, probeert een medewerker van de Drvkkery nog het ijs te breken, maar ze zijn te overdonderd door haar enthousiaste reactie en uitgestoken hand!

De nummers die ze ten gehore bracht waren alle afkomstig van haar drie verschenen albums: Cat, Sentimental Streak en Inside This Heart of Mine (die uiteraard in de winkel te koop waren), zoals het nummer Quiet Whiskey ( on the shelf) dat oorspronkelijk door Wynonie Harris, een Amerikaanse Blues-shouter in de jaren vijftig op de plaat gezet werd. Ze eindigde met een negrospiritual die nog niet op de plaat staat, maar wellicht op een later album een plaatsje zal vinden. Catherine begon haar professionele carrière in de muziek in de gospel groep van Carrie Smith, waarmee ze voor de eerste keer naar Europa reisde. I was raised in a home filled with music: Jazz, blues, gospel, opera - music everywhere. ( = Ik ben opgegroeid in een omgeving vol jazz, blues, gospel, opera ...... overal muziek). vertrouwde ze me toe. Ze luistert nog graag naar de muziek gespeeld door haar vader, Luis Russell, de grote bandleider en arrangeur. He made his last recordings in 1946 ( = Hij maakte zijn laatste opnamen in 1946 ) ( met zanger Lee Richardson op het Apollo label), vertelde Cat me, because for an arranger of big band music there was no work anymore, because of new styles of music, new interests, you know.. (= Voor een big band arrangeur was er geen werk meer, vanwege de opkomst van nieuwe muziekstijlen, nieuwe interesses, snap je). And you know, he was such a nice man, Hans ........ maybe he was too nice, you understand? ( = Hij was zo'n lieve man, Hans - misschien wel te lief, snap je?). Tijdens haar jeugd kwamen er heel was jazzmuzikanten bij haar ouders over de vloer, zoals Louis Armstrong, die gedurende de jaren dertig bij haar vader in het orkest zong.

It feels great to sing these old traditionals for such nice people as here in Middelburg ( = Het is fantastisch om dit soort oude nummers te zingen hier in Middelburg), vertelde Cat me. I love to have a photo from all of you.( = Ik wil van jullie allemaal een foto maken) en zo gezegd zo gedaan - aan het eind van het concert waren de rollen omgedraaid en werd het publiek in het zonnetje gezet.

Catherine Russell kan de komende weken tijdens een aantal concerten in Nederland gehoord worden met Mark Shane aan de piano. Een lijst met optredens vind je op haar website onder gigs.

Het zou mooi zijn als De Drvkkery meer van dit soort gratis laagdrempelige in-shop jazzconcerten zou kunnen organiseren, samen met Harmonia Mundi of een andere platenmaatschappij. Veel mensen komen zo in aanraking met live-jazzmuziek en dat werd, gezien de reacties, zeer gewaarderd ....

Cat en Mark lieten een half uurtje lang de zon schijnen in de Drvkkery ..............Thanks for that, Cat!!

Op zaterdagmiddag 24 oktober 2010 geselde een gure wind met herfstachtige allure de markt van Middelburg, maar in De Drvkkery leek even de zon door te breken. De Amerikaanse jazzzangeres Catherine Russell, Cat for friends, trad op tijdens een kort optreden in de muziekafdeling van de Drvkkery. Dit unieke in-shop concert in Zeeland was de opmaat voor een serie concerten in ons land. Samen met haar pianist Mark Shane, liet Cat de zon even schijnen ..... De Keep Swinging blog doet graag verslag van dit soort bijzondere optredens en als je niets wilt missen vraag dan de gratis nieuwsbrief .

On a chilly and rainy Saturday afternoon in October Catherine Russell brought warmth into the hearts of tens of people at the Drvkkery book shop in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands. Where am I? Middelburg? Okay, Hi Middelburg, it's great to be here. Thank you for coming. If we have this kind of weather in New York City nobody would come ............ Thank you for that !! The small in-shop concert was organized by her record company Harmonia Mundi and The Drvkkery as a warming-up for her extensive tour along Dutch theatres and clubs.

During a small concert she sung half a dozen tunes. She started with my favourite We The People, the well known Fats Waller classic, but seldom played now a days. It's one of the tracks available on her latest album Inside This Heart of Mine.

Mark Shane, piano player on her new album, told me that he likes to play those Waller stride piano tunes from the 1920s and 1930s, to share them with the audience. These tunes don't belong in a museum, it shouldn't be handled like museum pieces - it are great compositions, still worth playing.

Catherine welcomed the audience and focussed her welcome especially to some young kids on the front row, who became a little disconcerted. Ze zegt Hallo tegen jullie, a staff-member of The Drvkkery translated Cat's words.

The tunes she sung were all from her three albums, Cat, Sentimental Streak and Inside This Heart of Mine, like the tune Quiet Whiskey ( on the shelf) as originally recorded in the 1950s by Wynonie Harris, an American Blues shouter and Rhythm & Blues singer. She ended with a negro spiritual to be released on one of her next albums. Catherine did started her career as a professional singer in a gospel group led by Carrie Smith and with that group she visited Europe for the very first time. Now's it's the third time we are in Holland this year, isn't it Mark? she verified.

She still loves to listen to the music made by her father, the great band leader and arranger Luis Russell. He made his last recordings in 1946 ( with vocalist Lee Richardson), for the Apollo label, Cat told me, because for an arranger of big band music there was no work anymore. New styles of music, new interest, you know. And oh, he was such a nice man ........ maybe he was too nice, you understand? During her youth a lot of jazz musicians visited her parental home, like Louis Armstrong who had sung in her father's orchestra during the 1930s.

It feels great to sing these old traditionals for such nice people as here in Middelburg, Cat told me. And she really liked Middelburg: What a nice people - I love to have a photo from all of you and at the end of the small concert she suited the action to the word.

It would be great if The Drvkkery could organize more of those free-accessible in-shop performances, together with Harmonia Mundi or other record companies. These concerts could be a first acquaintance to jazz music for a lot of people.
