Jutta Hipp: Early Years
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A month ago, Blue Note reissued one of those small jewels in hard bop made by a now almost forgotten piano player Jutta Hipp. The album is titled: Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims (Blue Note 93178).Today I love to share with you some facts about Jutta Hipp's early years, when she lived and performed in Germany. In a second contribution, titled Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims I'll tell you about this album and her US period.

Jutta Hipp, born in Leipig, Germany in February 1925 and passed away a few years ago in Queens near New York ( April 2003 ), made some great albums, but opt for a career as a painter. Born in Leipzig, after the war part of the German Democratic Republic, she had learned to play the piano as a kid, but studied graphic design at the Leipzig Academy of Arts when she was a teenager. During the Second World War, she later said in a US interview, Jazz helped her to survive: You won’t be able to understand this, because you were born here (in U.S.) but to us Jazz is some kind of religion. We really had to fight for it, and I remember nights when we didn’t go down to the bomb shelter because we listened to (jazz) records. We just had the feeling that you are not our enemies, and even though the bombs crashed around us…we felt safe.
After the Second World War she fled to the western part of Germany, where she started to play Jazz in the GI clubs, Jazz meeting places for US soldiers. She founded her own quintet in a swing style related to the music of Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson, but bebop was new and she became fascinated by the music of Bud Powell. In the early 1950s she had her own group, with musicians like Emil Mangeldorff, the brother of Albert, Joki Freund and now and then Attila Zoller, her fiancé for some times, who should become a known guitar player. Thanks to Leonard Feather, producer and jazz critic, who heard her playing, she could make a recording for Blue Note, titled New Faces - New Sounds and helped her to move to the US, where she arrived, painstaking archived by Feather in his New (!) ( New is 1960) Editon of the Encyclopedia of Jazz as 18 november 1955. He organized her a Musicians' Union Membership Card, an essential document if you want to be a musician in The States.

In my next contribution, titled Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, I will tell more about her US period, in which she made that great recording with Zoot Sims for Blue Note. (Hans Koert - keepswinging@live.nl )
MICKEY BLOOM:
Some months ago I posted a contribution about a film fragment by Eddie Lang, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. But who are the others on the pictures?. A few days ago Dick Feingold, from Glen Head, NY USA, stated that the trumpet player was not Mickey Bloom. Today he gives us some more information about his uncle. He wrote: Hi, Hans--Mickey and his brother Rube ( the well known piano player and songwriter ) were two Brooklyn boys from the early 20th century who played with a lot of bands until the 70's. Rube wrote "Fools Rush In" "Day In, Day Out" "Give Me the Simple Life" "Truckin'" and many others. They worked together when they could. Mickey was married to my mother's sister for many years, and I learned a lot from him. Both were great players. All the best! ( contact Dick: keepswinging@live.nl )

De plaat is getiteld: Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims (Blue Note 93178).

In een Amerikaanse interiew zegt ze: You won’t be able to understand this, because you were born here (in U.S.) but to us Jazz is some kind of religion.(= Het is voor jullie, die hier geboren zijn, wellicht moeilijk te begrijpen, maar Jazz was een soort religie voor ons). We really had to fight for it, and I remember nights when we didn’t go down to the bomb shelter because we listened to (Jazz) records. We just had the feeling that you are not our enemies, and even though the bombs crashed around us…we felt safe.(= We hadden het gevoel dat jullie niet onze vijanden waren en zelfs al vielen de bommen overal om ons heen, we voelden ons veilig)
Leonard Feather, haar beschermheer, archiveerde nauwkeurig in zijn New ( ! = nieuw in 1960) Edition of the Encyclopedia of Jazz de aankomstdatum: 18 november 1955
