Sonny Rollins in Carnegie Hall

A few weeks ago I told you in my daily Keep Swinging blog about the concert Sonny Rollins gave at Carnegie Hall, New York, the 18th of September 2007, due to celebrate the fact that he played 50 years ago on the same spot for the very first time. His first appearance at Carnegie Hall was on the 29th of November 1957. The photos on this site are from that 1957 concert.

In my contribution about this event I asked people to share their remembrances of one of these concerts with us. I received a great report of Michael Gilbreath I love to share with you.

1957 Carnegie Hall program

Hans, you asked for comments from people who were present for Sonny's 50th Anniversary Carnegie Hall concert.
I was at Sonny's concert, and it was genuinely wonderful. During the trio portion at the beginning, Christian McBride "wowwed" the crowd with a terrific bass solo. And Roy Haynes, even at 82, was truly impressive. Sonny was wonderful too, but it seemed everyone pulled their own weight. Later, during the set with Sonny's touring band, Kimati Dinizulu played a mesmerizing solo that, at one point, got so very soft and quiet, that you could have "heard a pin drop" in Carnegie Hall - quite an amazing performance by Kimati.

1957 program

During the two hours immediately prior to the concert, my granddaughters, Mikayla (14) and Briana (12), both aspiring jazz sax players, and I hosted a reception solely to honor Mr. Sonny Rollins. The more notable persons in attendance were Lou Donaldson, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath, Paquito D'Rivera, David Liebman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marion Meadows, and Jazz Journalists Association President Howard Mandel. In addition, Benny Golson composed a touching verbal tribute to Sonny, specifically to be presented at this pre-concert reception.

Een paar weken geleden vertelde ik in mijn dagelijkse Keep Swinging blog over het concert dat Sonny Rollins gaf op 18 september 2007 in Carnegie Hall, New York ter gelegenheid van het feit dat hij vijftig jaar geleden op diezelfde plaats voor het eerst optrad. Zijn eerste optreden in Carnegie Hal was op 29 november 1957. De foto's van het programma in deze bijdrage zijn van dat concert uit 1957.

In mijn bijdrage vroeg ik mensen, die bij één van de twee concerten aanwezig geweest waren hun herinneringen met ons te delen. Ik ontving een bijdrage van Michael Filbreath, die met zijn kleindochters het concert van 18 september jl. bezocht en foto's maakte op de receptie, die voorafging aan dit concert. Hij vroeg me zijn verslag en foto's met jullie te delen.

Je riep mensen op, Hans, die aanwezig waren bij het Sonny's 50th Anniversary Carnegie Hall concert hun ervaringen te delen.
Mijn kleindochters en ik waren aanwezig op Sonny's concert, en het was echt geweldig. Tijdens het deel waarin Sonny Rollins optrad met het trio, ging er een siddering door de zaal bij de geweldige solo waarmee Christian McBride het concert opende. Zijn bassolo ontlokte een "wow" in de zaal. En Roy Haynes, toch ook al 82 jaar oud, was ook geweldig, net als Sonny overigens. Alle drie lieten ze horen dat ze, stuk voor stuk, meester zijn op hun instrument. Later, tijdens de set met zijn reguliere groep, speelde drummer Kimati Dinizulu een geweldige solo, zo zacht en relaxed, dat je een speld kon horen vallen in Carnegie Hall; wat een geweldige solo van Kimati.

1957 program

Tijdens de twee uur vlak voor het optreden, was er een receptie ter ere van Sonny Rollins, waarbij ik, samen met mijn twee kleindochters Mikayla (14) en Briana (12), allebei gedreven jazzsaxofonistes, aanwezig was. Er waren een aantal gerespecteerde jazzmusici aanwezig zoals Lou Donaldson, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath, Paquito D'Rivera, David Liebman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marion Meadows, en de voorzitter van de Jazz Journalists Association Howard Mandel. Ter gelegenheid van dit concert en deze bijeenkomst schetste Benny Golson in een paar woorden Sonny Rollins en zijn betekenis voor de jazz.

Mysterious Mose

Mysterious Mose (Doyle)- Harry Reser and his Radio All-Star Novelty Orchestra ( 30 March 1930 )

Today just a short contribution about a great 1930 hit Mysterious Mose. All recordings of this tune in my collection are from:
April 1930:

• Bobby Dixon Broadcasters
• Ted Weems and his Orchestra
• Rube Bloom Bayou Boys
• Karl Radlach and his Orchestra.

More contemporary recordings:

• R. Crumb Cheap Suit Serenaders (1976),
• the Dutch White House Orchestra
• the Crooks, the string band of Frenk van Meeteren. (both 1986).

An interesting version of this tune is to be found in the Fleischer cartoon Mysterious Mose, featuring Bimbo. The girl is, of course, an early version of good old Betty Boop. This is the third Fleischer production in which Betty Boop plays that was released. It was released as a Talkartoon on the 26th of December 1930.

 
One of my most favorite versions of Mysterious Mose is the version by R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit serenaders ....... Mysterious Mose:

The Hit of the Week version of Mysterious Mose might be  the most rare Durium record from the past. It was recorded by Boby Dixon's Broadcasters, a group by vocalist Dick robertson ( recorded April 1930)

 

 
Last, but not least, the version of two Dutchmen, Professor Peter (Peter Van Alphen) and Doctor Dick (Dick Heymans),founders of the Small Instrument Society. Enjoy it !!

Vandaag een korte bijdrage rond het nummer, een top hit in 1930: Mysterious Mose. Alle opnamen, die ik in mijn verzameling heb, dateren van April 1930:

Een andere bekende versie is die uit de tekenfilm van Max Fleischer getiteld Mysterious Mose, met Bimbo. Het meisje in de film is, natuurlijk, een vroege vorm vanBetty Boop. Ze was daarvoor nog maar twee keer eerder te zien geweest in een Fleischer cartoon. Deze film werd uitgebracht als Talkartoon 26 December 1930.
 

Eén van de meest bekende versies van Mysterious Mose is die van R. Crumb en zijn Cheap Suit Serenaders:

 

Waarschijnlijk de meest zeldzaamste versie is die op een kartonnen Hit of the Weekplaat uit 1930.  Er zijn maar een paar exemplaren van bekend. Het werd in april 1930 opgenomen onder de naam van de Bobby Dixon's Broadcasters, een band o.l.v. Dick Robertson.

Ondrej Havelka Melody Makers

Some weeks ago I pointed you to the fact that the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, famous because of his legendary concerts in Breda during the late 1970s and 1980s, were still active in Prague. Thanks to some readers we could share some film fragments of the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra performing on one of the bridges in Prague this summer. I also received a CD of this retro-orchestra, directed by Pavel Klikar from one of our Swedish readers. I'll reviews these 2002 recordings later.
I learned from some research that Ondrej Havelka, the crooner of the band, started his own orchestra, named the Melody Maker. If you have been on the Breda concerts you'll remember Ondrej Havelka as the rather shy, a bit frumpy crooner, with his pair of so-called National Health glasses and the typically 1920s hairdress with the parting in the middle. His voice, the timbre, the sound was an exact copy of let's say Noble Sissle singing Sweet Henry. What a thrilling experience !!

Joergen pointed me to the fact that Ondrej Havleka's band, The Melody Makers, is still very active and if you visit its website you learn that they made, at least five or six CDs during the last decade: Ondrey Havelka & His Melody Makers - Off There Noodles (2005) - Jen pro ten dnesní den... (1999) - George Gershwin (1999) - Me To Tady Nebavi (1995) - The Swings (1995). It would be great to listen to these records. I found some film fragments that learns me that Ondrej is still fascinated in making an exact copy of the past. In his films he wants to re-create the atmosphere of the 1930s and 1940s and, really, I enjoyed these great parodies on the 1930s romantic films. I hope you like these films as I did. I hope to review some of his CDs later.

If you love to see and hear this band live, you have to visit Prague, but they also play, next week, in Belgium. They will perform in Izegem (Belgium) in Feestzaal Sint-Jozefscollege on te 6th of October. The orchestra will play Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Jaroslav Jezek's Bugatti Step.

Een paar weken geleden wees ik op het feit dat de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, beroemd om zijn concerten eind jaren zeventig begin jaren tachtig nog steeds actief waren in Praag, Tsjechië. Dankzij enkele lezers kon ik filmpjes laten zien van een optreden op één van de bruggen van Praag. Ik ontving ook van een lezer uit Zweden één van de laatste CDs uit 2002 van dit retro-orkest, o.l.v. Pavel Klikar. Ik kom daarover in een latere blog terug.
Ik ontdekte na wat onderzoek dat Ondrej Havelka, de crooner - zanger van de band, zijn eigen orkest begonnen was, genaamd de Melody Maker. Als je er eind jaren zeventig bij geweest bent in Breda, dan herinner je je ongetwijfeld Ondrej Havelka als de ietwat verlegen, sullige zanger, met het ziekenfondsbrilletje en het glimmende glad gekamde haar met middenscheiding. Zijn stem, die klank, dat timbre, die exacte copie van, laten we zeggen een Noble Sissle die Sweet Henri zingt, vergeet je nooit. Wat een ervaring !!.

Joergen wees me op het feit, dat de band van Ondrej Havleka, The Melody Makers, nog steeds erg actief is en als je afgaat op hun website, dan ontdek je dat ze de afgelopen tien jaar minstens een vijf- of zestal CDs gemaakt hebben: Ondrey Havelka & His Melody Makers - Off There Noodles (2005) - Jen pro ten dnesní den... (1999) - George Gershwin (1999) - Me To Tady Nebavi (1995) - The Swings (1995). Ik zou deze CDs graag een keer horen, om te ontdekken of deze band nog steeds die magische klank heeft. Ik vond een aantal filmfragmenten die laten zien dat Ondrej Havelka nog steeds geboeid is door het maken van een exacte kopie van het verleden. In zijn muziekclips weet hij de sfeer van de jaren dertig en veertig perfect te reconstrueren en, echt, ik geniet van deze films, die een parodie zijn op de zoetige romantische films uit de jaren dertig. Ik hoop de CDs van de Melody Makers een keer te kunnen bespreken.

Les Pommes De Ma Douche

Les Pommes De Ma Douche is a French group of musicians that plays in the so-called Manouche Jazz-style. When you read the liner notes of their third CD, On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler, they try to put that into another perspective, as it prefers to be labeled as a swing band. They explain how they disassociate on the so-called pompe manouche ( the typically hot club accent on the second and fourth note ) and renamed their band in Les Pommes De Ma Douche ( On their website they even translated this band name as The Apples Of My Showers ).

No more kidding about their name. The music they play on this album is really very entertaining and ..... swinging. The musicians on the CD are Dominique Rouquier on solo guitar, Pierre Delaveau on rhythm guitar, David Riviere on accordeon, Laurent Zeller on violin and Laurent Delaveau on bass.

I like the title tune On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler , which learn that the members sing too. Je Suis Swing is a traditional and with Roule Hot they proof they still can play in the manouche style.

The opening track is Tickle Toe , in fact a Count Basie - Lester Young composition. You can see and hear The Pommes ... perform it in the next film fragment below.
I hope to find their two previous CDs, Y va tomber des cordes ! and J'ai connu de vous... Monsieur Trenet.

Les Pommes De Ma Douche is een Franse groep musici, die, op het eerste gezicht in de manouche-jazz traditie spelen. Als je echter het verhaaltje op hun derde CD, On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler, leest, merk je dat ze daar eigenlijk wat afstand van willen nemen. Ze willen liever als een swing band betiteld worden. Ze leggen uit hoe ze aan hun naam gekomen zijn, doordat ze de zgn. pompe manouche ( het kenmerkende accent op de tweede en vierde noot in de muziek van Django Reinhardt) met een woordspeling omvormden tot Les Pommes De Ma Douche. ( Op hun website vertalen ze hun naam weer in het Engels als The Apples Of My Showers - een beetje ver gezocht. ) Goed, geen grapjes meer over hun naam; de muziek die ze spelen is schitterend en .... het swingt. De musici op de CD zijn Dominique Rouquier op solo gitaar, Pierre Delaveau op slaggitaar, David Riviere op de accordeon, Laurent Zeller op viool en Laurent Delaveau aan de bas.

Ik vind het titelnummer On n'est pas la pour se faire engueuler schitterend; het leert dat de mannen ook vocaal actief zijn op de plaat. Je Suis Swing is een traditional en met Roule Hot laten ze horen dat ze best nog met de manouche stijl overweg kunnen.

Het openingsnummer Tickle Toe is in feite een Count Basie - Lester Young compositie, en je kunt in het filmfragment hieronder The Pommes ... het nummer uit zien voeren.

Lou Blackburn

Thanks to the great Connoisseur cd series of Blue Note, compiled by Michael Cuscuna ( What a great job he has !! ) we can now enjoy the music of a great nearly forgotten trombone player Lou Blackburn. The Lou Blackburn The Complete Imperial Sessions was released a year ago and thanks to this great reissue we now can enjoy this unknown musician. To be honest - I'd never heard about Lou Blackburn and when I played this compilation for the very first time, I learned that I had missed a lot of good stuff in the past.

Lou Blackburn was born in Rankin, a suburb of Pittsburgh November 1922 and he studied at the Roosevelt University. While in the army he had his own group and lived in Europe as a soldier. Back in the USA he played with Charlie Ventura, Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington before he returned to Europe. Before he did so he earned his money in the film studios of Los Angeles. These Imperial records, Jazz Frontier ( Imp. 12228) and Two-Note Samba ( Imp. 12242) are from that period and, as I said before, I was fascinated by Lou Blackburn playing the trombone, Freddie Hill on the trumpet and Horace Tapscott as the leader of a driving rhythm section featuring John Duke on bass and Leroy Henderson on drums.

I read in a review that recognition in jazz often depends on being there on the right time on the right place. Lou Blackburn wasn't: he played as a nearly anonymus musician in the filmstudio bands of California, performed in low-paying club dates or hidden in a brass section of a large big band. If you want a good solid piece of music try to find yourself a copy of this great Lou Blackburn album. There is one minor point: the cover. Don't judge for it - listen to the music.

Dankzij de fantastische Connoisseur cd series van Blue Note, samengesteld door Michael Cuscuna ( Wat een wereldbaan heeft die man!! ) kunnen we nu eindelijk genieten van de schitterende trombonist Lou Blackburn. Deze Lou Blackburn The Complete Imperial Sessions is een jaar geleden uitgebracht en daar door is de muziek van deze vrijwel onbekende muzikant voor iedereen toegankelijk geworden. Eerlijk gezegd - zelf had ik ook nog nooit van Lou Blackburn gehoord en deze verzameling leerde me dat ik, klaarblijkelijk, daardoor heel wat gemist had in het verleden.

Lou Blackburn is geboren in Rankin, een voorstad van Pittsburgh in november 1922 en hij studeerde aan de Roosevelt Universititeit. In het leger was hij gedetacheerd in Europa en speelde hij in een eigen band. Terug in de States speelde hij bij Charlie Ventura, Lionel Hampton en Duke Ellington voordat hij weer voor langere tijd naar Europa verhuisde. Daarvoor werkte hij geruime tijd in Los Angeles in orkesten, die vooral filmmuziek opnamen. Deze Imperial platen, Jazz Frontier ( Imp. 12228) en Two-Note Samba ( Imp. 12242) zijn uit deze periode en, zo als ik al eerder zei: het spel van Lou Blackburn op de trombone, Freddie Hill op trompet, Horace Tapscott op piano en een driving ritmesectie met John Duke op bas en Leroy Henderson op slagwerk, staat als een huis.

Ik las in een interview, dat succes en waardering in de jazz vooral te maken heeft met het feit of je op het juiste moment op de juiste plaats bent. Lou Blackburn was dat niet: hij speelde vrij anoniem, in studiobands in Californië en als hij eens buiten de deur speelde kwam hij niet verder dan gigs in slecht betalende clubs. En in zo'n uitgebreid orkest als dat van Lionel Hampton of Duke Ellington was hij één van die instrumentalisten weggestopt tussen het koperwerk. Als je een heerlijke swingende plaat zoekt met prachtige arrangementen ( Lou Blackburn) koop dan deze plaat. Oh ja .... ga niet af op de verpakking - die vind ik ronduit smerig. Ga af op de muziek !!
