Joe Newman

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
This Joe Newman CD, titled Soft Swingin' Jazz by The Happy Cats is a new reissue of two 1950s classic albums on the Lonehill Jazz label. ( LHJ10213). The CD contains two complete LPs, but it is difficult to find the names of the two editions in the liner notes; some careless work in a great production. The titles of the reissued LPs are: Soft Swingin' Jazz (1958) and Happy Cats (1957)
Joe Newman was born in 1922 in New Orleans and his first appearance in an illustrious band was with Lionel Hampton's early 1940s. Between 1943 and 1946 he played in the Count Basie band. In the second half of the 1940s he played briefly with Illinois Jacquet en J.C. Heard, but returned to Basie in the early 1950s. He was now one of the leading trumpet players in Basie's swing band during the 1950s and toured with Benny Goodman to Russia in 1962. While part of the Count Basie Orchestra he made some recordings with own groups, like Happy Cats (1957) and Soft Swingin' Jazz (1958), but also I'm Still Swinging (1955) and The Midgets (1956). When Joe Newman had left Count Basie he got involved to Jazz Interaction, a non-profit organisation that organised jazz courses and stimulated jazz education among students. He became a sought after freelance trumpet player. He died in 1992.

Last night I played the first part of this record, the Soft Swingin' Jazz LP reissue, with the Joe Newman Quartet featuring Shirley Scott on the organ. She was born in Philadelphia in 1934 and learned to play the piano. In 1955 she started to play the organ and became a member of the Eddie Davis Trio, before she started to record under her own name. This 1958 Soft Swingin' Jazz session belongs to that series, although the LP was credited to Joe Newman. In the 1960s she toured with Stanley Turrentine, whom she married. The other two members of the quartet are Eddie Jones on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. The eleven tracks on this album are relaxed and swinging and both Joe Newman and Shirley Scott got plenty of space to express their skillfulness on their instruments. Joe Newman also sings, not without merit, on some tracks and Shirley Scott, although not on the same level as her contemporary colleague Jimmy Smith on the hammond, gives it a groovy base.
I found a fragment where Joe Newman is rehearsing for the 1970 Newport Festival, dedicated to Louis Armstrong's 70th birthday. You will recognize Jimmy Owen, Wild Bill Davison, Bobby Hackett (my first LP was played by his band), Joe Newman and of course Louis himself.

Semilar records of these artist in my collection:
  • al cohn sextet and orchestra feat. joe newman/that old feeling
  • joe newman octet/i'm still swinging
  • joe newman septet/the midgets
  • shirley scott trio/skylark
  • charlie turrentine/common touch (featuring shirley scott)

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
Deze Joe Newman CD, getiteld Soft Swingin' Jazz by The Happy Cats is een nieuwe heruitgave van twee klassieke jazzalbums uit de jaren vijftig door het Lonehill Jazz label. (LHJ10213).
Joe Newman overleed in 1992.
