Enrico Rava

The Italian trumpet player Enrico Rava recorded October 1999 with the Michael Flügel Quartet a great live concert at the Birdland Jazz Club of Neuburg. Neuburg is a city in the south of Germany in upper Bavaria. Its jazz club is one of the oldest in Germany. It was founded in 1958, which means that it will celebrate its 50th birthday next year, like the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (southwest part of the Netherlands) did a few months ago in April of this year. Enrico Rava is rather unknown here in the Netherlands. He was born in 1943 in Trieste, learned himself to play the trumpet and he started his career with the band of Gato Barbieri in 1964. He toured around the world with Steve Lacy in the 1960s. In the 1970s he played with Roswell Rudd and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra and founded in 1976 his own quartet. During the next decades this quartet consisted different musicians like Roswell Rudd and Giovanni Tommaso to name some.
Nowadays he becomes more and more active as a composer, especially for big bands. He led big bands with special guests like Albert Mangeldorff, Alexander Schlippenbach and Roswell Rudd. Rava is a fiery and lyrical trumpet player, who plays in this album with the Michael Flügel Quartet: Four hungry German lions and a grey Italian wolf - the liner notes say, featuring Michael Flügel at the piano, Frank Lauber on alto saxophone, Dietmar Fuhr at the bass and Dejan Terzic on drums. Half of the tracks are compositions by Enrico Rava, like Diva, a Rava favourite in double waltz-time. My Funny Valentine is one of the standard on this album, a great ballad, made famous by Chet Baker of course.

For me, it was my first introduction to Enrico Rava and it would be great to hear him play somewhere some time.

De Italiaanse trompettist Enrico Rava nam in oktober 1999 een schitterend live concert op met het Michael Flügel Quartet in de Birdland Jazzclub van Neuburg. Neuburg ligt in het zuiden van Duitsland, in Beieren en werd opgericht in 1958. Het is de oudste jazzclub van Duitsland en dat betekent dat ze volgend jaar een feestje hebben en net als de Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen de afgelopen maanden, volgend jaar hun 50 jarig bestaan zullen vieren. Enrico Rava is tamelijk onbekend hier in Nederland. Hij werd geboren in Triëst in Noord Italië, leerde zichzelf trompet spelen en begon zijn carriere in 1964 in het kwintet van Gato Barbieri. Hij trok in de jaren zestig de hele wereld rond met de band van Steve Lacy en begin jaren zeventig vinden we hem terug bij Roswell Rudd en de Jazz Composer's Orchestra. In 1976 formeerde hij zijn eerste eigen kwartet, dat in de daaropvolgende jaren nog al eens van samenstelling wijzigde. Bekende musici uit die kwartetten zijn bijvoorbeeld Roswell Rudd en Giovanni Tommaso om er maar een paar te noemen.
Tegenwoordig is Enrico Rava vooral actief als componist, speciaal voor big bands. Hij leidde verschillende big bands met namen als Albert Mangeldorff, Alexander Schlippenbach en Roswell Rudd. Rava is een vurig en lyrisch trompettist, die met dit Michael Flügel Quartet een mooi album creërde. Als four hungry German lions and a grey Italian wolf (vier hongerige Duitse leeuwen en een grijze Italiaanse wolf) wordt deze samenwerking in het bijbehorende inlegvel omschreven. De vier hongerige leeuwen zijn Michael Flügel aan de piano, Frank Lauber op altsax, Dietmar Fuhr op de bas en Dejan Terzic op slagwerk. De helft van de geselecteerde nummers voor deze CD zijn van de hand van Enrico Rava, zoals Diva, een nummer in een snel walstempo. Het is, net als Certi Angoli Secreti, één van Enrico's favorieten. My Funny Valentine is één van de standards, een schitterende ballad, bekend geworden door Chet Baker. Voor mij was het de eerste kennismaking met Enrico Rava en het zou natuurlijk mooi zijn hem eens live bezig te zien.
