Paul Whiteman

Years ago, when I first started to collect and enjoy jazz music in all its variations, I learned about Paul Whiteman, the orchestra director from the 1920s and 1930s always mentioned in the same breath with Bix Beiderbecke,the celebrated cornet player from Davenport, who played at that orchestra for some years late 1920s. It seemed as if Paul Whiteman's band was uninteresting during the period Bix was not a part of the orchestra's. Thanks to a series of LPs that were released by a young Dutch sound engineer, Harry Coster, in the 1980s, I learned that Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra made some good music, even without Bix Beiderbecke. The two LPs are:

• Paul Whiteman & his Orchestra - volume 1 ( 16 original 1921-1925 recordings) ( Alpha Records 03303)
• Paul Whiteman & his Orchestra - volume 2 ( 18 original 1926-1927 recordings) ( Grannyphone 03306 ).

Last night I played the 1926-1927 recordings. from the period just before Bix Beiderbecke started his short careeer at Witeman's band.

Nowadays Paul Whiteman is no longer ignored by the serious jazz collector. His music is best labeled as jazz orientated dance music, well arranged hot dance music; jazz for the young people in the Roaring Twenties. His nickname King Of Jazz dates from that period. The two LPs are now hard to find, but there are numerous other released nowadays that can introduce you to this great Paul Whiteman bands. I found some fragments with Paul Whiteman to illustrate how important he was. I could have select one of the numerous fragments of the film The King Of Jazz, already a subject in one of Jo's previous blogs - but I didn't. I found a 1928 fragment which includes Bix Beiderbecke, standing on the far left with his cornet for a few seconds, a cartoon from 1934, Coon Crazy, with Al Jolson, Mae West and Paul Whiteman in parody and a 1927 film where you can see Paul Whiteman, on tour in the Netherlands, at the sea front near The Hague in the Netherlands. He played at an engagement at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen during that shot.

Jaren geleden, toen ik me net ging verdiepen in het fenomeen jazz in al zijn verschijningsvormen, merkte ik dat het leek alsof Paul Whiteman en zijn orkest altijd in één adem genoemd werd met Bix Beiderbecxe, de bejubelde cornetspeler uit Davenport, die kort bij Whiteman speelde. Het leek er op alsof Paul Whiteman's bands zonder Bix, niet de moeite waar waren uit jazzoogpunt. Dank zij een serie LPs, gemaakt door een jonge geluidsrestaurateur Harry Coster, ontdekte ik dat Witeman ook heel interessant is als Bix Beiderbecke niet speelt. Die twee LPs zijn:

Gisteravond luisterde ik weer eens met veel plezier naar de 1926-1927 opnamen uit de periode van vlak voordat bix Beiderbecke aantrad in de blazerssectie.

Tegenwoordig wordt Paul Whiteman niet langer genegeerd door de serieuze jazzverzamelaar. De muziek is het best te omschrijven als jazzy dansmuziek, goed gearangeerd hot dance music. ce; voor de jeugd tijdens de roaring Twenties gewoon jazz dus. Zijn bijnaam King Of Jazz dateert uit die periode. De twee LPs zijn nu moeilijk te vinden, maar er zijn nu genoeg alternatieven om kennis te maken met de muziek van Paul whiteman. Ik ben op zoek gegaan naar een aantal filmfragmenten om Paul Whiteman's muziek te onderstrepen. Ik heb niet gekozen voor één van de ontelbare shots uit de film The King Of Jazz, al eens gebruikt als onderwrp in een voorgaande blog gemaakt door Jo. ik vond een fragment uit 1928 ewaarbij we nog net linksboven even Bix Beiderbecke met zijn cornet in beeld krijgen ( Het fragment wordt tweemaal gedraaid - de tweede keer is het beeld iets dichterbij getrokken) Het tweede fragment is een tekenfilm uit 1934, Coon Crazy, waarin de pophelden van die tijd, Al Jolson, Mae West en Paul Whiteman getekend worden. Het derde fragment laat beelden uit 1927 zien, waarbij Pasul Whiteman met zijn gevolg over de boulevard van Scheveningen flanneert. Hij is in die plaatsvoor een serie optredens in het Kurhaus.
