This Savant CD, made my Rodney Jones and his quartet is titled: Rodney Jones - Dreams and Stories. It was relesed in 2005. The members of the group are Rodney Jones guitar, Kenny Kirkland piano, Marc Johnson bass and Jeff "Tain" Watts drums.
I had never heard about Rodney Jones, who's name was not in the regular jazz databases, and that is undeserved as he is a great guitar player, influenced by Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel and Grant Green. He was born in 1956 in New Haven and learned, while studying at the university, to improvise from John Lewis, the piano man from the Modern Jazz Quartet. He played for some times in John Lewis group, before he joined the Jaki Byard's group Music Complex Orchestra at the Five Spot. In the mid 1970s he played with Chico Hamilton and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1978 he founded his own group - Kenny Kirkland became the piano player. In the 1980s he played the guitar for Lena Horne and arranged for her. He recorded with Maceo Parker and Hilton Ruiz late 1980s. In 2001 he made a funk album, Soul Manifesto, featuring Maceo Parker, Arthur Blythe and Lonnie Smith.
This album, Dreams and Stories, recorded in 1983, contains more traditional material, although most of the compositions are by Rodney himself. The only three standards are Star Eyes, Summertime ( from Gershwin) and Road Song. Jazz is a young man's music best played by older men, he quotes in the liner notes - think about it !! The album surprised me, as I learned that Rodney Jones is a skilled guitar player, who made a very entertaining disc. All the tunes on this CD, he says in the liner notes, were recorded using my thumb instead of a pick. I used the thumb because it is a more delicate and softer sound and flows from the soul not just the mind or heart. Also the other three members of the band are great, which makes this album a well-balanced release.

In the first one we see a young Rodney Jones in the mid 1970s next to eminent grise Dizzy Gillespie, playing jazz-rock and the second fragment was made more recently at a concert, where you can enjoy his great guitar playing.
