Wim Overgaauw

This LP was one of the popular releases in the Netherlands during the 1970s, made by Wim Overgaauw. This album, Blue Guitar, features him with his quartet and contains most standard tunes. Wim Overgaauw was a great guitar player, but rather unknown outside the Dutch borders.
Wim Overgaauw was born in 1928 in Hilversum ( centre of the Netherlands) and started to play violin in a classical orchestra, but changed to the guitar at the age of 17. His first band was the group of John Krispijn ( 1951) and later, during the mid 1950s he toured through Germany with the Stardust Quartet and with the Wessel Ilcken Combo through England. After some years together with George Abel ( guitar duo) he fouded his own group, the Bill White Combo. From the 1960s onwards he became part of the Pim Jacobs Quartet, but was also a regular member of the Skymasters, the Metropole Orchestra and his own trio with Koos Serierse ( bass player) and Evert Overweg (drummer). This rhythm section, enlarged with Jan Huydts on (Fender) piano is the line-up of the band on this Blue Guitar album. It was recorded in Blaricum ( centre of The Netherlands) May 1977. The album contains two compositions by the musicians: True Blue is labeled as a composition made by the quartet and Blue Guitar is credited to Wim Overgaauw.

Wim Overgaauw became a sought after musician for recording sessions and performances and started to teach young guitar players at the Amsterdam School Of Music, like Maarten Van Der Grinten and Jesse Van Ruller, the promising guitar player who won the Thelonous Monk Award late 1990s. When Wim Overgaauw died in 1995 Jesse inheritted his Gibson guitar.

Wim Overgaauw was a rather shy person, introverted and unsure and could efface himself in the rhythm sections. But if he got a solo part, he suddenly showed his great talent and won admiration from the audience. Some people say he was the best guitar player of The Netherlands and its enviroments.

I found three fragments; one at a concert performance with Paul Weeden, another great guitar player and two with the Pim Jacobs Quartet at a concert feauring Johnny Griffin' in one number.

Deze LP is één van de platen, die Wim Overgaauw ons uit de jaren zeventig heeft nagelaten. Op deze plaat, Blue Guitar, speelt hij voornamelijk standards met zijn quartet. Wim Overgaauw was een geweldig goede Nederlandse gitarist, maar helaas nooit echt bekend geworden buiten onze landsgrenzen. Wim Overgaauw werd geboren in Hilversum in 1928 en begon als violist in een strijkorkest, maar vanaf zijn 17de werd het de gitaar, waarmee hij carriere zou maken. Zijn eerste band was die van John Krispijn ( 1951) en later reisde hij met Stardust Quartet door Duitsland en het Wessel Ilcken Combo door Engeland. Nadat hij nog een paar jaar samengespeeld had met George Abel ( gitaarduo) richtte hij zijn eigen groep op, het Bill White Combo. Vanaf 1960 werd hij lid van het Pim Jacobs Quartet, maar was ook regelmatig te horen in de Skymasters, het Metropole Orkest en met zijn eigen trio met daarin Koos Serierse ( bassist) en Evert Overweg (drummer). Deze ritmesectie, uitgebreid met Jan Huydts op (Fender) piano is de bezetting van het kwartet waarmee Wim Overgaauw op deze plaat speelt. De plaat werd opgenomen in Blaricum in mei 1977. Het album bevat, behalve standards, twee eigen composities: True Blue, een collectieve improvisatie door de hele groep en het titelnummer Blue Guitar van Wim Overgaauw zelf.

Wim Overgaauw werd een veel gevraagd gitarist bij opnamesessies en optredens en begon op het Amsterdams Conservatorium gitaarlessen te geven. Maarten van der Grinten en Jesse van Ruller, de veelbelovende gitarist, die de Thelonious Monk Award won eind jaren negentig, zijn een paar van zijn leerlingen. Na het overlijden van Wim, 66 jaar oud, in 1995 erfde Jesse van Ruller de Gibson gitaar van Overgaauw en daar speelt hij nog steeds op.

Wim Overgaauw was een introverte, tamelijk verlegen en onzekere man. Hij deed onopvallend zijn werk in verschillende combo's en verraste dan iedereen door plotseling een geweldige solo neer te zetten. Men zegt wel dat Wim Overgaauw één van de beste gitaristen van Nederland was.

Ik heb drie fragmenten gevonden waarin je dit kunt bepalen: Twee met het trio van Pim Jacobs ( op één fragment begeleiden ze Johnny Griffin') en één met het kwartet ( met Han Bennink op drums). Het derde fragment is een zeldzaam filmpje met een optreden met Paul Weeden.
