Adrian Mears

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling )
I spotted this CD because of the fascinating name of the band Adrian Mears New Orleans Hardbop. New Orleans and Hardbop: it seems a contradictions. Although I had heard about Adrian Mears I had never heard the music of this trombone player. So, I seized this opportunity.
Adrian Mears was born in Newcastle, Australia 1969 and learned to play trombone at the Sydney Conservatory. He performed in the late 1980s with visiting US jazz man like Don Pullen and got an opportunity to study in the US with some great trombone players like Steve Turre, Slide Hampton and Conrad Herwig. Back in Australia he won several awards and in the 1990s he settled in Europe to give trombone lessons on conservatories in Cologne and Basel. Seven years ago he toured with the Vienna Art Orchestra and became a member of it. Now he is a celebrated trombone player, appreciated for his playing on this hard to handle instrument.

As I was fascinated by the name of the band I was anxious to learn how the music sounded. Well, I can tell you, it sounds great. The idea of making this album was born a few years ago when Adrian Mears played with drummer Jeff Boudreaux, born in New Orleans. Mears tells about New Orleans music: I love the rhytmical treatment of melodies, how they can bounce and dance one minute and lay down a strong groove the next, feeling more natural than sounding complicated. I love the music on this album very much. The quintet, featuring Adrian Mears on trombone, Domenic Landolf on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Peter Madsen at the piano, Stephan Kurmann on the bass and Jeff Boudreaux at the drums is doing a good job. I like the second track, Stompin' very much, a kind of Thelonious Monk inspired traditional stomp.
I found a film fragment where you can hear Adrian Mears playing the trombone in the Vienna Art Orchestra. Hope you like it.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

New Orleans en Hardbop: twee schijnbare tegenstellingen.
Mears zegt over de New Orleans muziek: I love the rhytmical treatment of melodies, how they can bounce and dance one minute and lay down a strong groove the next, feeling more natural than sounding complicated.
