Winifred Atwell

Some weeks ago I was pointed to a film fragment of Winifred Atwell, the popular piano player and entertainer. She was a rather popular piano player in England during the 1950s. We had an LP of her, with a cover like the one below that featured all her well known rags.
Winifred Atwell was born in Trinidad in 1914 and started to play the piano when she was four years old. In the 1940s she played in the London Casino and she made her first recording for Decca in 1951; It became a hit: Jezebel and Black and White Rag. It was played in a kind of old fashion ragtime style, we would call it honky tonk or tingle tangle music. She had a lot of hits: I remember the Brittania Rag. She also made some classical recordings with the London Philharmonic Orchestra directed by André Kostelanetz. She made records with Ted Heath too, like Rhapsody in Blue and Dinah's Boogie. In the 1960s she wasn't as popular as in the 1950s and she moved to Australia where she died in Sydney in 1983. Her last performance was in 1980.
As a teenager I loved to play boogie woogies, as I told before, but I also opened the front of the piano, like Winifred Atwell and played my ragtimes like she did. Our piano was most of the times out of tune, but that was not a problem for this kind of music. It was great fun, without any musical value at all. I liked ragtimes ( I bought myself a box of LP played by Richard Zimmerman with all compositions of Scott Joplin), due to the fact that I was fascinated by the piano roll player. When I got my first job, a collegue had such a piano, but unfortunally the mechanism inside had been lost. I love to share with you the Winifred Atwell film where she plays one of her hits and a fragment of a man playing and singing those semi-popular ragtime songs as I loved to play when I was a teenager. Just fun. The third fragment is an old player piano, so you can see why I was fascinated about this instrument.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks a lot, Hans, for sharing these great videos. Winifred Atwell was a great entertainer and a gifted piano player (- Fats Waller would have loved her!), her rendition of "Black And White" was a favorite of mine, even before I knew the musical term 'ragtime'. - I always dreamt of having a player piano in the parlour, anyway, I could only save enough money for the nickels & dimes needed for the mechanism running, so another lost dream, of course ...
