Chet Baker Plays Lerner and Loewe

Some months ago I found an original 1959 album of Chet Baker plays the best of Lerner and Loewe on a Riverside LP ( Riverside RLP-12-307) - such a stiff cardboard cover in modest condition, smelling to old book shops; the record itself with its blue label in modest condition too, lightly scratched - all cheap sentiments that are important for a record collector. ( BTW: The image of the cover above is from an Original Jazz classic reissue)
Some days ago I heard Jules Deelder playing LPs from his collection at the end of the Porgy & Bess concert at a disco where the audience could dance on the music. Complete introverted, without any commends, he played tune after tune at a maximum permitted sound level forcing the audience to listen and prevent the audience from communicating. Playing this music from the original 33rpm vinyl records should give this kind of music something extra - something more authentic. The truth or cheap sentiments?
Why did I buy this record on vinyl? Well, because I'm not better then any other record collector. Everybody who collects music wants to find it as original as possible. The most original is of course having Chet Baker at your house playing the tunes, but, since Chet fell out of a window in Amsterdam this is impossible. Next are the source tapes used to record the session. Such tapes, if they still exist, are in the archive of the record company. The first issue of the recording on LP is the most original source you can find. That's why record collectors want to have the first issue of an album if they can find it. If you only want to have this first releases in your collection, you need a lot of money and time and most music wil never reach your record player. In the early days, when we made reel-to-reel copies or copies on cassette the quality of the sound was inferior to the original; nowadays, with the digital reproduction possibilities the sound of the reissues on CD are as good as the orginal on LP. Nearly as good as the original, the real collector will say, because he wants the smell of the cover and he feel the 12-inch record in his hands.

Een paar maanden geleden vond ik een originele exemplaar van Chet Baker plays the best of Lerner and Loewe op een Riverside LP ( Riverside RLP-12-307) - zo'n ietwat vergeelde stijf kartonnen hoes in redelijke staat, naar tweedehands boeken ruikt. De plaat zelf met zijn blauwe label en lichte krasjes op het glanzende vinyl eveneens in redelijke staat. Een buitenkansje voor een platenverzamelaar of (niet zo) goedkoop sentiment? ( ps: Het plaatje hierboven is, zoals en kenner al wel gezien zal hebben, van een heruitgave op het label Original Jazz Classics)
Een paar dagen geleden hoorde en zag ik Jules Deelder tijdens het slot van het Porgy & Bess concert met zijn disco in de weer. Hij draaide uit zijn schitterende collectie originele jazz, LPs waarop de mensen konden dansen. Geheel in zichzelf gekeerd, afgesloten van de buitenwereld, draaide hij nummer na nummer, zonder commentaar ( Je mottur niet doorheen lullu ... zou hij hebben kunen zeggen) op het hoogst toegestane geluidsniveau, al wilde hij het publiek dwingen te luisteren in plaats van te praten met elkaar. Het spelen van deze originele platen geeft de muziek iets extra, alsof het allemaal wat authentieker is ...... of is het vals sentiment?
Waarom kocht ik deze opnamen op vinyl? Nou, ik ben geen haar beter dan elke andere platen verzamelaar, alhoewel gelukkig niet zo fanatiek. Iedereen die platen verzamelt probeert zijn muziek zo authentiek mogelijk te pakken te krijgen. Het meest authentiek is natuurlijk Chet in huis halen en hem laten spelen, maar dat is sinds zijn val uit het raam van een hotel in Amsterdam niet meer mogelijk. De moederbanden van deze opnamen liggen waarschijnlijk veilig opgeborgen in de kluizen van de platenmaatschappij, dus kom je bij de eerste uitgaven op vinyl terecht. Als je zo fanatiek bent zul je, of heel rijk, of heel veel tijd moeten hebben om een leuke collectie te krijgen - veel zal altijd voor je onbereikbaar blijven. Toen het kopieren van platen nog betekende dat je in de weer ging met die grote spoelenbandrecorders en later het casettebandje en je kopie altijd minder van kwaliteit was dan het origineel, was het streven om te zoeken naar originelen wellicht nog te verdedigen - nu we digitaal kopieren zonder kwaliteitsverlies is dat niet meer nodig. Toch zweren veel verzamelaars dat het origineel beter klinkt dan de CD en voelen ze liever de 12 inch plaat in hun handen. Zelf ben ik nieuwsgierig naar opnamen die ik nog niet ken en gaat het mij om de muziek en niet om de geluidsdrager. Ik verzamel dus eerder trillende lucht dan plastic schijven.

It was recorded in New York City July 1959 by a septet featuring Chet Baker on trumpet, Zoot Sims on saxophone, Herbie Mann on flute, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Bob Corwin at the piano, Earl May on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. It contains eight tracks with tunes composed by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, originators of the musical My Fair Lady. It is not Chet's best album - he made much better albums during the 1950s, but the line-up of the group is great and the music they play fits into the numerous albums Chet made in the 1950s. It is the last album Chet made in the US before he left to Europe ( Italy) where he lived for a rather long time ( even in jail due to drugs). Europe would become his second native country.

Opgenomen in New York eind juli 1959 door een septet met Chet Baker op trompet, Zoot Sims op saxofoon, Herbie Mann op fluit, Pepper Adams op de bariton, Bob Corwin achter de piano, Earl May op bas en Clifford Jarvis op drums. Het bevat acht nummers, alle gecomponeerd door Alan Jay Lerner en Frederick Loewe, verantwoordelijk voor de musical My Fair Lady. Het is niet Chet's beste plaat uit de jaren vijftig; er zijn wel interessantere te bedenken, maar de bezetting van de groep maakt het waard om de plaat te beluisteren. Bovendien is het de laatste opname die Chet in Amerika maakte voordat hij naar Italië verhuisde, waar hij heel wat jaren ( waarvan een deel in de gevangenis voor drug gebruik) zou blijven hangen.
Italie en later ook Nederland zouden Chet's tweede vaderland worden. Ik vond een fragment, van slechte kwaliteit, dat wel, van een jonge Chet om te laten zien hoe hij in deze periode voordat hij naar Europa verhuisde, speelde. Ray's Idea.
Ik vond een kleine documentaire over Jules Deelder terwijl hij zijn platen draait en vertelt over platenverzamelen.
