Five Foot Two

I was pointed to this CD, Farewell Blues - Hot String Bands ( a Krazy Kat KKCD 30 release) by Joergen some times ago and he was right: great music. Western Swing - unpretentious amusement, without deep meanings or difficult chord progresses. I like the names of the bands; names like The Westerners, The Washboard Wonders, Hugh & Slug, Swing Billies and Son of the Ozarks; they remember me to the days when I was young and I listened to the early 1920s dance bands with their weird names. For me, the Western Swing, is a rather unkown style of music, so I don't have much info about the musicians. I listened to the CD and halfway I heard some familiar music: Jack Pierce singing Has Anybody Seen My Gal, in fact the tune: Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue. This tune, written by Ray Henderson, Sam Lewis and Joe Young in 1925 became a hit in the 1920s.
My brother and I played that tune, with it simple chords ( C - E7 - A7 - F - G - C ) when we were kids, in all kinds of different tempos and moods. Great to hear it again. It's a tune that still inspires other amateur musicians, as I learned, and I love to share with you some fragments of their interpretations. Enjoy it !

Ik werd op het bestaan van deze CD, Farewell Blues - Hot String Bands ( een Krazy Kat KKCD 30 uitgave) gewezen door Joergen en hij had gelijk: heerlijke muziek. Western Swing, pretentieloos amusement, zonder een diepere betekenis met eenvoudige akkoorden en een goed in het oor liggende melodielijn. Ik hou van de namen, die op de plaat staan, zoals de Westerners, The Washboard Wonders, Hugh & Slug, Swing Billies en Son of the Ozarks; ze herinneren me aan de dagen dat ik nog jong was en voor het eerst kennis maakte met de jazz en dansmuziek uit de jaren twintig, waar soms ook van die vreemde namen gebruikt werden. Ik weet weinig van Western Swing, dus heb ik gewoon lekker geluisterd. Eén nummer herkende ik: Jack Pierce die het nummer Has Anybody Seen My Gal zingt. Ik herkende het als Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue. Dit nummer, geschreven door Ray Henderson, Sam Lewis en Joe Young in 1925 was een hit in de twintiger jaren.

Mijn broer en ik speelden dit nummer ( op gitaar en piano) tot we een ons wogen. Het had eenvoudige akkoorden ( C - E7 - A7 - F - G - C ) en we improviseerden erop in allerlei tempo's. Leuk om het weer eens te horen. Het is nog steeds een nummer populair bij amateurmusici, ontdekte ik, daarom heb ik een aantal fragmenten geplaatst, van geslaagde en minder geslaagde uitvoeringen. Genieten dus !!
