Blue Serge

This great album should be in any serious jazz collection: Blue Serge by the Serge Chaloff quartet. It was recorded 51 years ago ( 14 and 16 March 1956) by Serge Chaloff on baritone saxophone, Sonny Clark at the piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bas and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
It was Serge's second album under his own name. For the first album, Boston Blow-up! , Serge needed six months to prepair it - making the arrangements, rehearsals, making a track list etc etc, but this time, there were no preparations, no rehearsals; even the tunes they should play were uncertain. And the band members had never played together, although Serge and Philly Joe Jones jammed one time before. Although two members belong to the so-called West Coast Jazz school (Sonny Clark and Leroy Vinnegar) and the others to the East Coast Jazz ( Serge and Philly Joe ) it didn't made any different while playing. It is a warm balanced album.
I have tried to make a list of tunes I like the best on this album, but I stopped. I've Got The World On A String is beautiful, like Susie's Blues, dedicated to a woman who helped Serge after his comeback due to a heroin habit. The Goof and I, written by Al Cohn or A Handful of Stars?. All great tunes. You can listen to some fragments if you click on the title tunes.

Deze schitterende plaat hoort thuis in elke serieuze jazzcollectie: Blue Serge gespeeld door het Serge Chaloff Quartet. Het werd 51 jaar geleden opgenomen ( 14 en 16 maart 1956) door Serge Chaloff op de bariton saxofoon, Sonny Clark aan de piano, Leroy Vinnegar op bas en Philly Joe Jones op drums.
Het was het tweede album van Serge onder eigen naam. Aan zijn eerste album, Boston Blow-up! , waren maanden van voorbereiding vooraf gegaan - het kiezen van de nummers, de repetities, de arrangementen van de stukken. Bij dit album ging het heel anders toe: geen repetities, geen arrangementen, zelfs de titels voor de plaat waren nog niet bekend. Zelfs de leden van het kwartet kenden elkaar nog niet; alleen Serge en Philly Joe hadden ooit eens samen gejammed. Hoewel Serge en Philly Joe Jones tot de zo genaamde East Coast Jazz behoren en Sonny Clark en Leroy Vinnegard tot de West Coast Jazz gaf dat geen enkel probleem bij het samenspelen. Het is een hele degelijke samenhangende plaat geworden.
Ik heb geprobeerd een lijstje te maken met de mooiste nummers, maar ben ermee gestopt. I've Got The World On A String is schitterend, net als Susie's Blues, genoemd naar de vrouw die Serge na zijn heroineverslaving weer op de been hielp. The Goof and I, geschreven door Al Cohn of A Handful of Stars? Het zijn allemaal schitterende nummers. Koop of leen deze CD en geniet van elk nummer.
