A few months ago I bought unseen a bunch of CDs and this one was in it. Of course I had heard about Larry Coryell and I was a bit affraid that Emily Remler shoud be a vocalist, accompanied by Larry on the guitar. Of course this needs some explanation: I'm not a great fan of vocalists. But, surprise ........ surprise ............. Emily Remler happened to be a great guitar player.

For me Emily Remler was a great surprise. She is a skilled guitar player, and probably due to the fact that she passed away at such a young age (33 years old), her name was unknown to me.

She started to play the guitar when she was ten years old and during the 80s she was already a rising star. She studied at the Berklee College of Music, played for some times in New Orleans and New York and made some great albums, later after her death in 1990 reissued in two CDs. She played as a duo with other great guitar players like Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis, who she adored. This CD, titled Together, with Larry Coryell is one of her best. Like Coryell's duo album Twin-house with the Belgian guitar player Philip Catherine, this album Together on Concord is worth to search for. It contains 7 tunes: Arubian Nights - Joy Spring - Ill Wind - How My Heart Sings - Six Beats, Six Strings - Gerri's Blues and the Jobim composition How Insentitive.

I found two fragments in which you can enjoy Emily playing the guitar. It's a pity she passed away so young, only 33 years old - she could have developed to a great guitar player.

Een paar maanden geleden kocht ik ongezien een stapel CDs en deze CD zat daar ook tussen. Natuurlijk had ik gehoord van Larry Coryell, en ik was een beetje bang dat hij op deze plaat de een of andere zangeres zou begeleiden. Natuurlijk vraagt dit om enige uitleg: Ik ben niet zo'n fan van jazz-zang - vandaar deze wat ongenunanceerde opmerking ! Maar ......... het pakte anders uit: Emily Remler bleek een zeer talentvolle gitariste.

Emily Remler was voor mij een verrassing; ze bleek een heel ervaren muzikante te zijn en misschien omdat ze al vroeg overleden is, op 33 jarige leeftijd, had ik nooit van haar gehoord.

Ze begon gitaar te spelen toen ze tien jaar was en tijdens de jaren tachtig rees haar ster snel. Ze studeerde af aan het bekende Berklee College of Music en speelde een tijdje in New Orleans en New York. Ze nam verschillende platen op, die later, na haar dood in 1990 werden heruitgebracht op twee CDs. Ze speelde als duo met gitaristen als Barney Kessel en Herb Ellis, die ze mateloos bewonderde. Deze CD, getiteld Together, met Larry Coryell is één van haar beste. De foto's bij deze weblog zijn van een optreden dat ze gegeven hebben ter voorbereideing van deze plaat. Net zoals voor het Larry Coryell - Philip Catherine duo-album Twin-House geldt, ben ik blij deze plaat gevonden te heben - ik kan hem jullie van harte aanbevelen. Ik vond twee fragmenten waarop je kan horen en zien hoe de veel te jong overleden Emily speelde.
