Tiny Parham

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Some musicians are only known to specialized record collectors and music historians. Tiny Parham is one of those, now almost forgotten bandleaders from the 1920s that never became known to the public.
I had two LPs in my record collections, both with a framed photo of the only known picture of Hartzell Strathdean Parham, known as Tiny, labeled simply: Tiny Parham and his Musician Vol. 1 ( Collector's Classics CC 39 ) and Vol. 2 (Collector's Classics CC 40 ). Later these sides were reissued on a great Timeless 2CD ( Timeless CBS 1-022 ) with a terrible designed cover.

The two LPs are bck in my collection. I found both at a record fair and last night I played the second volume and enjoyed its well arranged tracks.
Tiny Parham, actually born in Winnipeg, Canada, developed as a skilled versatile bandleader, who toured through Mexico, Canada, Hawaii and Cuba before he actually based in Chicago. Here he played in venues like the Merry Garden Ballroom, The Lincoln Tavern and the Savoy Ballroom, great names in jazz history. He died in 1943 while on stage at the Kilbourn Hotel in Milwaukee.

Tiny Parham himself played the piano, but also the celeste and the electric organ later in his career. He was a great composer and most of the tunes he recorded where made by himself. The musicians in his bands are now all forgotten, but the tunes learn that Tiny Parham had well organized and skilled musicians in his band. The two LPs contain the music made during the late 1920s when he made most of his recordings.
Listen to some of his tunes:
Jungle Crawl (1929) and the composition Rock Bottom ( 1930), played later by the Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra and the up tempo tune Nervous Tension (1930) that shows, although it is still a real 1920s tune, what a great arranger - composer Tiny Parham was.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

Thanks, Hans, for remembering an almost forgotten bandleader and a great musician from the early days of jazz. Tiny was an accomplished composer and arranger, his recordings deserve to be played more often.
