Jack Norman - Chick Bullock

Thanks to Jerry Priessen I was pointed to some flexible records that are for sale on eBay; a Goodson, a Filmophone and this beautiful set containing a durium record covered in a Veckans skiva sleeve.

These flexible records all date from the late 1920s and 1930s and were an answer to the very vulnerable shellack records. They were cheap, light weight and unbreakable. Nowadays most of these records are rare and good copies are difficult to find.
What about this Veckans skiva? It was released in Sweden on the 27 th of May 1932 in a weekly range. this one is number 6 and the series of Veckans skiva (means Weekly Record) went up to ca. 100 in 1933. The sleeve was, of course, to protect the record inside, but contained also information about showbizz and entertainment. This one has a sensationell intervju med den världberömde filmjäleten Ramon Novarro om Greta Garbo. Inside a durium record, a kind of Hit of the week, originally recorded in the US for export to Europe. The matrices were brought to Europe, by ship I guess, and the record, made from card board covered by an acetate called Durum, were made in Slough, a suburb of London. These recordings were made in the second half of the 1931 by named artists. The band was actually Phil Spitalny's Music, who is reponsible for most Durium's Hit of the week recordings (a series made in the US similiar to these Veckans Skiva's). He accompanied the Paul sisters, a popular vocal group ( but who are the members?) and the famous Chick Bullock. As Chick Bullock was under contract for ARC reords in the US he wasn't allowed to sing on this recording, so he cooperated ( I guess he wanted some extra income due to the depression) under the conditions that the records should never be issued in the US. His name is on the cover and label in full, but Phil Spitalny used a pseudonym, Jack Norman.

These Veckans Skiva covers are beautiful coloured and much more collectible then the dull Hit of the week or Durium covers.

Dankzij Jerry Priessen werd ik gewezen op verschillende flexibele platen die te koop zijn op eBay, zoals een Goodson, een Filmophone en een durium plaat in een kleurrijke Veckans skiva hoes.

Deze flexibele platen dateren uit de periode rond 1930 (depressie), waarin ze een antwoord wilden zijn op de dure breekbare schellak platen. Ze waren goedkoop, licht van gewicht en onbreekbaar. Tegenwoordig zijn gave exemplaren moeilijk te vinden.

Wat kan ik vertellen over deze Veckans skiva ? Hij werd uitgebracht op 27 mei 1932 in een wekelijkse serie. Dit is nummer 6 en er zijn er zo'n 100 gemaakt ( tot in 1933). De hoes moet natuurlijk de plaat beschermen, maar gaf ook informatie over de show business; over onderwerpen die niets met de plaat te maken hadden. Deze hoes meldt een sensationell intervju med den världberömde filmjäleten Ramon Novarro om Greta Garbo.
De plaat binnenin is een durium plaat á la de bekende wekelijkse Hit of the week serie. Deze plaat is speciaal opgenomen voor export naar Europa. De matrijzen werden per schip naar Europa gebracht en hier in Slough ( bij London)op platen geperst. Deze platen waren van karton gemaakt met een laag Durium kunststof. De band op de plaat was die van Phil Spitalny, een bandleider verantwoordelijk voor heel veel Hit of the week platen, de voorloper van deze Veckans Skiva (betekent wekelijkse plaat)

Op deze plaat begeleidt hij de Paul sisters, een groep zingende zusjes ( Wie waren zij? Wie kent de namen?) en de bekende crooner Chick Bullock, die onder contract stond bij ARC records. Hij zal deze opnamen dan ook wel stiekem gemaakt hebben ( uit geldgebrek - denk aan de depressie) op voorwaarde dat ze alleen in Europa mochten worden uitgebracht. Phil Spitalny kwam op het label te staan als Jack Norman, een pseudonym.

Deze Veckans skiva hoezen zijn mooi uitgevoerd en leuk om te verzamelen, veel leuker dan de saaie Hit of the week of Durium hoezen.
