Louis Armstrong and his Friends

He is, no doubt about that, the most celebrated jazz musician of the XXth century, but I only have a few items of him in my collection, like his recordings with King Oliver, his Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings from the 1930s and this duets with Ella from the 1950s. I found the LP Louis Armstrong and his Friends ( Philips 6369 401) a few month ago and took it. It is one of Louis last performances in public.
Born in August 1900 (there is still some discussion about that) he celebrated his 70th birthday in May 1970 at a great birthday party in Hollywood.
Louis was an old man already, he was ill and didn't play trumpet due to shortness of breathe.
He got a rocking chair and a birthday cake over 3.5 meter high. There were 6700 fans who heard him sing some of his standards.
This LP contains 10 tracks that were recorded during three different sessions, which means that the party was spread out during several days. Louis sings, with his broken voice, as best he could.
I took this LP because I didn't found the ordinary commercial standards, like Hello Dolly and Blueberry Hill, but tunes like the Beatles song Give Peace a Change, My One and Only Love and This Black Cat Has 9 Lives. In We Shall Overcome a lot of jazz musicians, friends, like Bobby Hackett, Chico Hamilton, Ornette Coleman, Leon Thomas and Miles Davis sing in the choir.

A year later, Louis died aged 70 years old, one of the most celebrated jazz man ever. This LP is a nice keepsake.

Hij is, zonder twijfel, de meest geëerde jazzmuzikant van de twintigste eeuw, maar toch heb ik maar weinig van hem in mijn collectie. Natuurlijk de opnamen met King Oliver, met zijn Hot Five en Hot Seven uit de twintiger jaren en de duetten met Ella uit de jaren vijftig. Ik vond de LP Louis Armstrong and his Friends ( Philips 6369 401) een paar maanden geleden en nam hem mee. Hij bevat één van de laatste opnamen met Louis Armstrong.
Geboren in Augustus 1900 ( de juiste datum schijnt niet bekend) vierde hij in mei 1970 zijn zeventigste verjaardag op een groots verjaardagsfeest in Hollywood.
Louis was toen al een oude man, ziek en speelde geen trompet meer wegens problemen met zijn ademhaling.
Hij kreeg een schommelstoel cadeau en er was een verjaardagstaart van 3,50 meter hoog. Er waren 6700 fans gekomen om hem nog één keer zijn bekende nummers te horen zingen.
Op deze LP staan 10 nummers, die gedurende drie dagen werden opgenomen - hieruit blijkt dat het feest uitgespreid was over verschillende dagen.
Ik nam deze LP mee, omdat er nu eens niet die uitgekauwde versies van Hello Dolly en Blueberry Hill op stonden, maar nummers als de Beatles song Give Peace a Change, My One and Only Love en This Black Cat Has 9 Lives. In We Shall Overcome zingen een heleboel jazzmusici, his Friends, zoals Bobby Hackett. Chico Hamilton, Ornette Coleman, Leon Thomas en Miles Davis mee in een achtergrondkoor.
Ooit de kans gehad om Miles Davis te horen zingen? Probeer hem maar eens te vinden in het koor.
Een jaar later overlijdt Louis, zeventig jaar oud en deze LP is een mooi aandenken aan deze gevierde muzikant.
