Todays blog is dedicated to some great fragments on film by Thelonious Monk, while performing in Paris and Warshaw. I found four fragments from the Thelonious Monk tour to Europe, spring 1966 organized by George Wein. The quartet performed in Paris, Caen, Lyon, Nantes, Amiens, Geneva, Bern, Zürich, Lugano, Basel, Lecco ( northern Italy), Brussels and Warshaw. They performed in Oslo, Stockholm(?) and Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London ( Royal Albert Hall) and Birmingham and Manchester.
On the 9th of May 1966 he flew to Japan for nine concerts. On te 16th of May he returned to the States for some more US concerts.

During this European tour several concerts were recorded on film - well known are the Oslo and Copenhagen shots, but I found some film fragments that are less known. First of all a fragment probably made at the start of the concert at the Palais de la Mutualité in Paris (France) on the 20th of March, 1966. These two fragments are from a French broadcast, which makes the quality rather poor, but the shots are great. The Thelonious Monk Quartet featured Monk at the piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums. The first shot was made from the very beginnings, behind the curtains, and includes some preparations before the concerts starts, which gives it that special feeling as if you are part of the performance. Great!

The tune that is played is Lulu's Back in Town. The second fragment was made during the same performance but with another camera.

In Warshaw (Poland) two concerts were schedulded and the concert was registered by the Polish television. In the Thelonious Monk biography Straight No Chaser, author Leslie Gourse describes what happened when Monk and Nellie, his wife, and the members of the band, visited, as tourists, a Polish palace. He describes that visitors had to wear slippers over their shoes to prevent the floors for damaging. When they visited the bedroom of the queen Monk climbed over the ropes, that were around the bed and layed down ......... Nellie screamed and Ben Riley, who heard her screaming, runned to the bedroom and shouted to Monk: What are you doing, motherfucker? You can't lie down there. It's a national treasure. Monk explained: I just wanted to see what the bitch saw.

Finaly I love to share with you the same tune, now recorded in Warshaw, that opened the concerts: Lulu's Back in Town in two film fragments.

When Monk was playing in Europe he loved to visit the Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, Nica for short. She was a wealthy woman who was fascinated by jazz and its musicians. She was like a godmother to them. I love to tell more about her later due to the fact that I obtained a copy of her book Les Musiciens de jazz et leurs trois voeux. ( = Jazz musicians and their three wishes.)

Deze keer is het uitgangspunt voor mijn blog een fragment van een optreden van Thelonious Monk, dat ik vond. De opnamen zijn gemaakt tijdens de Europese tournee van het voorjaar van 1966. Thelonious Monk deed toen met zijn kwartet een handjevol landen in Europa aan en trad op in steden als Parijs, Caen, Lyon, Nantes, Amiens, Geneve, Bern, Zürich, Lugano, Bazel, Lecco ( Noord Italie), Brussel en Warschau. Ze traden ook op in Oslo, Stockholm(?) en Kopenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London ( Royal Albert Hall), Birmingham en Manchester.
De serie concerten, georganiseerd door George Wein werd gevolgd door een serie van negen concerten in Japan en op 16 mei 1966 was Monk weer terug in de VS.

Er circuleren allerlei (privé)opnamen van deze concerten ( deels heruitgegeven op CD) en ook zijn er filmfragmenten bewaard gebleven. Monk moet je zien spelen en aangezien dat nu niet meer live gaat, zijn de films waardevolle bronnen - De concerten in Oslo en Kopenhagen zijn uitgebreid vastgelegd en welbekend, maar er zijn ook filmopnamen gemaakt in Parijs en daar viel mijn oog op. Allereerst een fragment van het optreden van 20 maart 1966 waarin Monk met zijn kwartet ( bestaande uit Ben Riley op slagwerk, Larry Gales op bas en Charlie Rouse op tenorsax) optreedt. Helaas is de kwaliteit van de opname slecht, maar hetgeen gefilmd is fascineerde me, omdat het shot achter het toneel begint terwijl de musici zich klaarmaken voor het optreden en het eerste nummer, Lulu's Back in Town, wordt aangekondigd. Het geeft je het gevoel dat je er zelf live bij bent. Het optreden vond plaats in het Palais de la Mutualité in Parijs en werd uitgezonden door de Franse televisie.

Het nummer Lulu's Back in Town vind je eveneens in het volgende fragment, waarschijnlijk gemaakt met een andere camera tijdens ditzelfde concert.

In Warschau gaf hij twee concerten en één ervan werd uitgezonden op de Poolse televisie. In een biografie over het leven van Thelonious Monk Straight No Chaser schrijft Leslie Gourse over het bezoek aan één van de paleizen in Warschau, dat Monk samen met zijn vrouw Nellie en de leden van de band bezocht. Ze moesten slippers aan over hun schoenen om de vloeren en de tapijten niet te beschadigen; de Polen zijn zuinig op hun paleizen. In de slaapkamer van de koningin hingen er koorden om het bed van de gemalin, maar Monk trok zich daar niets van aan, klom er overheen en ging op het bed liggen. Nellie schreeuwde, dat 'tie d'r af moest komen en Ben Riley kwam, geschrokken door het tumult, aangerend. What are you doing, motherfucker? ( = Wat doe je nou, klootzak) riep hij naar Monk, You can't lie down there. It's a national treasure. (= Je kunt daar niet zomaar gaan liggen! Dit is een nationaal erfgoed.) Monk reageerde laconiek: I just wanted to see what the bitch saw. ( = Ik wilde alleen maar zien wat dat mens ook gezien moet hebben). Hoe dit gebeuren afliep, vertelt het verhaal niet - feit is dat Thelonious Monk zich zelden iets aan trok van de geldende gangbare regels en het liefst, impulsief als hij was, zijn eigen weg koos.

Tot slot nog twee fragmenten, deze keer van het concert in Warschau. Weer het openingsnummer: Lulu's Back in Town.

Als Monk in Europa speelde ging hij graag op bezoek bij de Barones Pannonica de Koenigswarter, Nica voor haar vrienden. Ze was een vermogende vrouw, die gefascineerd was door de jazz en haar vertolkers. Ze was als een peetmoeder voor hen. Ik hoop binnenkort meer over haar te vertellen, omdat ik een prachtig boek: Les Musiciens de jazz et leurs trois voeux vond en een CD met nummers, die speciaal aan haar gewijd zijn.

Charlie Rouse

If I think of Charlie Rouse; I think of Thelonious Monk. It seems as if Charlie Rouse played his whole life in the Thelonious Monk Quartet. That's not true the bare facts show: Charlie Rouse only played in the Thelonious Monk groups between 1959 and 1970. Enjoy a fragment of one of this performances with Monk in The Netherlands.

A few months ago I found an LP of his band made after that period with Thelonious Monk. The album is titled Cinnamon Flower and the music was recorded in 1976.

Charlie Rouse was born in Washington DC April 1924 and passed away November 1988. Although his first instrument was the clarinet he switched to tenor saxophone later. He started, like so many bebop instrumentalists in the Billy Eckstine Orchestra mid 1940s. He made his first recordings in the Fats Navarro-Tad Dameron band. During the 1950s he performed with a lot of bebop musicians like Clifford Brown, Benny Green and Oscar Pettiford and had his own quartet, named Les Modes ( later renamed as the Jazz Modes). As I wrote before, he became known as one of the permanent members of the Thelonious Monk quartets. This album, Cinnamon Flower, is dedicated to the Brazilian music; a hot item in those days. It contains seven tracks, all played by the Charlie Rouse Band, featuring Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone of course, Clifford Adams on trombone, Claudio Roditi on trumpet ( I will always remember his great concert October 2004 at the Porgy & Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen (southwest part of The Netherlands), Dom Salvador at the piano. The rhythm section differs and contains guitars, bass ( Ron Carter should be mentioned here) and Brazilian percussion instruments.

Charlie Rouse could never break with his past. In the early 1980s he became a member in the group Sphere, dedicated to Monk's music.
Cinnamon Flower is not his best record, but it contains some interesting music and shows that Charlie Rouse actually was a strong saxophone player and not only runned after Monk as you would think. If you might find a copy of it at a garage sale, take it home.

Bij de naam Charlie Rouse denk ik altijd meteen aan Thelonious Monk en dat is natuurlijk niet zo gek. Voor mijn gevoel speelde hij zijn hele leven als tenorsaxofonist bij het Thelonious Monk Quartet. Dat dat niet zo is, geven de naakte cijfers weer: hij speelde van 1959 tot 1970 bij Thelonious Monk. Hier een voorbeeld van hem tijdens zo'n optreden in ons land.

Een paar maanden geleden vond ik een LP van hem, gemaakt na die periode bij Thelonious Monk. De plaat heet Cinnamon Flower en de muziek werd opgenomen in 1976.
Charlie Rouse werd geboren in Washington DC in april 1924 en overleed op 64 jarige leeftijd, november 1988. Hoewel hij begon op klarinet, werd hij bekend op tenorsax. Hij begon, zoals zoveel bebopmuzikanten in het grote orkest van Billy Eckstine midden jaren veertig. Zijn eerste platen maakte hij met de Fats Navarro-Tad Dameron band. In de jaren vijftig trad hij op met allerlei bebopmusici zoals Clifford Brown, Benny Green en Oscar Pettiford en had ook een eigen groep, genaamd Les Modes ( later omgedoopt tot the Jazz Modes). Zoals ik al eerder schreef werd hij in 1959 de vaste saxofonist van Thelonious Monk, als de man die hem haarfijn aanvoelde op de sax. Deze LP, Cinnamon Flower, is gewijd aan de Braziliaanse muziek; een hot item in die dagen. Het bevat zeven nummers, alle gespeeld door de Charlie Rouse Band, met Charlie Rouse op tenorsax natuurlijk, Clifford Adams op trombone, Claudio Roditi op trompet ( Ik zal me zijn optreden in de de Porgy & Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in oktober 2004 altijd blijven herinneren ), Dom Salvador aan de piano. De ritmesectie is steeds anders en bevat gitaren en bas ( Ron Carter is natuurlijk niet niks) en Braziliaans slagwerk.

Charlie Rouse kon nooit goed loskomen van de muziek van Thelonious Monk. In de jaren tachtig werd hij lid van de groep Sphere, gewijd aan de muzikale erfenis van Thelonious Monk. Cinnamon Flower is niet zijn beste plaat, maar het bevat interessante muziek en laat Charlie Rouse eens anders horen dan in zijn rol als slaafse volgeling van Monk. Koop hem, mocht je hem zien staan op een rommelmarkt.
