  De Toren van Babelband: 27 juli 1958: Exclusief concert in Blokker: Ruud Jacobs herinnert zich het feit dat ze handtekeningen moesten zetten in programmaboekjes en op petticoats ... "iets wat ik nog niet eerder had meegemaakt." De Toren van Babelband, the International Youth Band, was speciaal samengesteld om op te treden tijdens het Newport Festival van 1958, met als geestelijk vader en leider Marshall Brown. Er zaten jonge talentvolle Europese jazzmusici in de band, waaronder onze eigen Ruud Jacobs. Na het Newportfestival keerden de leden van het orkest terug naar Europa om hun samenwerkingsverband af te sluiten tijdens de Expo van Brussel. Daarvoor traden ze exclusief voor Nederland op in de veilinghal van Blokker (Hans Koert): Newport '58: Het optreden in Blokker 

The Tower of Babel's Band - The Blokker concert (1958): The International Youth Band, had been scheduled at the 1958 Newport Festival, directed by Marshall Brown. Last weekend Ziya Ertekin, aka Blue Flamingo, released his second album with 78rpm recordings at a concert at the Jazzkelder C5 in Rotterdam. This compilation is entitled Blue Flamingo - Congo Jazz. It contains almost two dozen 78rpm recordings in three separate mixes: Jungle Crawl, Congo Jazz and That Old Religion.

Let's introduce you to Ziya Ertekin. He's a young Rotterdam guy who is fascinated by 78rpm recordings, which he collects and as a DJ he shares his collection with his audience. Last year he performed at the Doctor Jazz Dag - the former half year Doctor Jazz Reunion record fair in Wageningen ( The Netherlands), where he played his records for an audience of jazz collectors. During that performance he played the original recordings available on his first album, simply entitled Blue Flamingo - 78 r.p.m. in which he made some musical trips to the roots of Latin music: Oriental Nitty Gritty - The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection and Ritmo and Blues.

In Congo Jazz, Ziya makes three musical expeditions to some seldom, if never visited unknown musical worlds. In Congo Jazz he introduces us to the African 78rpm recordings as made by Tino Baroza, the Kaba Joseph Groupe Rythmique Ngoma or the Orchestre African Jazz. In the informative booklet Ziya explains how the music from Latin America, like the rumba and Cuban son, became a hype in Central Africa ( the Congo's and Cameroon) during the 1930s. African artists adopted this music and made their own interpretations. The guitar became a very important instrument in Central Africa and one of the artists Nicolas Kasanda Wa Mikalay aka Docteur Nico, was even labelled as le dieu de la guitare ( = The god of the guitar). The last mix, That Old Time Religion, opened a new world to me, unknown to me so far. Ziya tells about Thomas A. Dorsey, better known as the Father of Gospel Music, known from the hit Precious Lord, Take My Hand which he wrote after the death of his first wife and child during childbirth. The tune became famous by Mahalia Jackson, who sings I'm On My Way To Canaan on this mix and Elvis Presley, who made it to a hit as Take My Hand, Precious Lord. Thomas A. Dorsey, no relative of the Dorsey Brothers, who became known as band leaders in the 1930s, recorded as Georgia Tom during the 1920s. He is to be heard on this compilation in a 1930s selection of Hide Me In Thy Bosom, as released on a one-to-one glass based record made by United Recording Laborities, New York City.

The first mix is the one that impressed me most, as the music is more familiar to the music I collect. It is entitled Jungle Crawl and contains some 78rpm recordings from the early 1930s from a period that this kind of jungle music was popular. The origins are going back to the early New Orleans Mardi Grass parades, where the Zulus, a colourful group of exotically dressed Afro-Americans joined the parades. Ziya described these men in the informative booklet, in a chapter titled: Jungle Crawl - The Zulus of New Orleans. The music he selected is really great: well known tunes like Jungle Crawl in a version by Tiny Parham and as a Clarence Williams recording - Borneo by Frankie Trumbauer and Jungle Fever by Red Nichols and his World Famous Pennies. And what to think about a rare I'm Mister African by Leon Rene's Orchestra, a rejected Victor recording of August 1932.

When I listen to this mix I realize, that this music was originally released as dance music and still it has a lot of power in it and could grabs hold of young people who even haven't seen a Long Play record nor a 78rpm shellac record and grew up with ipods and mp3-players. I'm sure it has the power to let them dance .....

This Jungle Crawl selection, professional mixed by Ziya Ertekin, ends with a great, but to me unknown version of one of the symbols of Dixieland jazz, the Tiger Rag as recorded by Phillips' Louisville Jug Band in August 1930 - what a refreshing surprise!

In his latest mix, Congo Jazz, he tells about the popularity of Cuban music in the centre of Africa, jungle music as critics called it years ago and about the birth of gospel music thanks to Tommy A. Afgelopen weekend bracht Ziya Ertekin, alias Blue Flamingo, tijdens een optreden in de Jazzkelder C5 in Rotterdam zijn tweede plaat met 78-toerenopnamen uit. Deze verzamel-cd is getiteld: Blue Flamingo - Congo Jazz ( Excel96202) en bevat een twintigtal opnamen van 78-toerenplaten bijeengevoegd in drie aparte mixen: Jungle Crawl, Congo Jazz en That Old Religion. Eerst even kort iets meer over Ziya Ertekin. Deze jonge Rotterdammer is gefascineerd door 78-toerenplaten, die hij op zijn reizen en "strooptochten" door Nederland, heeft verzameld. Hij treedt op als DJ, die louter 78-toerenplaten draait. Afgelopen jaar was hij te gast op de Doctor Jazz Dag - voorheen de Doctor Jazz Reünie, in Wageningen, waar hij een selectie platen van zijn eerste mix aan een geïnteresseerde groep verzamelaars liet horen. Dit eerste album is verschenen onder de naam: Blue Flamingo - 78 r.p.m. en hierop zijn drie ontdekkingsreizen te vinden, die Ziya maakte naar de wortels van de Latijns Amerikaanse muziek: Oriental Nitty Gritty - The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection en Ritmo and Blues.

In Congo Jazz, maakt Ziya ook een drietal expedities naar onontdekte muzikale paradijsjes met behulp van zelden gehoorde 78-toerenplaten. In Congo Jazz introduceert hij de luisteraar in de wereld van de Afrikaanse 78-toerenplaten, zoals die gemaakt werden door Tino Baroza, de Kaba Joseph Groupe Rythmique Ngoma en l'Orchestre African Jazz. In het informatieve boekje, behorende bij de CD, legt Ziya uit hoe de muziek uit Latijns-Amerika de binnenlanden van Afrika veroverde tijdens de jaren dertig en een ware hype veroorzaakte in Centraal Afrika ( Congo en Kameroen). Afrikaanse muzikanten adopteerden deze muziek en voegden er hun eigen elementen aan toe. De gitaar werd hierbij een belangrijk instrument voor artiesten als Tino Baroza of Nicolas Kasanda Wa Mikalay alias Docteur Nico, le dieu de la guitare ( = De God van de gitaar). De meeste platen voor deze Afrikaanse mix, geselecteerd door Ziya, dateren uit de jaren vijftig. Docteur Nico in de jaren vijftig

De tweede mix op de plaat die ik noem is getiteld That Old Time Religion; de wereld van Jubilee - en gospelmuziek; een onbekende muziekstijl voor mij. Ziya vertelt over Thomas A. Dorsey, de grondlegger van de Gospel, de Father of Gospel Music, die bekend geworden is door het nummer Precious Lord, Take My Hand, dat opgenomen werd door Mahalia Jackson en later door Elvis Presley's versie: Take My Hand, Precious Lord uitgroeide tot een hit. Thomas A. Dorsey, geen familie van de in Jazzkringen bekende Dorsey-broertjes, nam in de jaren twintig op onder de naam Georgia Tom. Hij sluit deze plaat af met een opname van Dorsey, Hide Me In Bosom, een unieke glasplaatopname uit de jaren dertig, gemaakt door United Recording Laborities, New York City.

De eerste mix op deze plaat spreekt me het meeste aan, omdat het muziek is, die me fascineert. Als titel voor deze mix is gekozen Jungle Crawl, naar een compositie van Tiny Parham, die dan ook te horen is met zijn Musicians. Deze mix bevat 78-toerenplaten van rond 1930 toen dit soort muziek populair was. De oorsprong van deze muziek ligt in het begin van de Twintigste eeuw toen in New Orleans tijdens Mardi Grass de zgn. Zulu’s, een kleurrijke exotische uitgedoste groep Afro-Amerikanen, meeliep tijdens de parade. Ziya beschrijft de geschiedenis van deze groep Zulu’s in Jungle Crawl - The Zulus of New Orleans. De muziek die geselecteerd is bevat behalve de eerder genoemde versie van Jungle Crawl ook een versie van datzelfde nummer door Clarence Williams; het bekende Borneo van Frankie Trumbauer en Jungle Fever door Red Nichols and his World Famous Pennies. En wat te denken van het zeldzame, door Victor nooit eerder uitgebrachte nummer van augustus 1932 I'm Mister African door het Leon Rene Orchestra?

Toen ik voor de eerste keer deze modern gemixte plaat opzette realiseerde ik me dat voor heel wat jongeren dit een eerste kennismaking kan betekenen met de dansmuziek van hun overgrootouders; dit soort oude opnamen, die oorspronkelijk ook als dansmuziek bedoeld waren, hebben in principe nog steeds die potentie om ook jonge mensen, opgegroeid in een wereld met MP3's en iPods en voor wie LPs, laat staan 78-toerenplaten, niet meer zijn dan relikwieën zijn uit een ver voorbij verleden, in de benen te krijgen ........

De Jungle Crawl selectie, professioneel gemixt door Ziya Ertekin, eindigt met een frisse verrassende versie van het doodgespeelde Tiger Rag door Phillips' Louisville Jug Band uit augustus 1930 - een mooi slot. De plaat is te koop op de website van Excelsior Records, en de betere platenzaak ( zoals de Drukkerij in Middelburg) bij jou in de buurt.

Zoals David Livingstone in de negentiende eeuw de witte vlekken van donker Afrika beschreef, zo brengt Ziya Ertekin, alias Blue Flamingo, ons in aanraking met onbekende juweeltjes uit onontgonnen tijden - ooit vastgelegd op breekbare 78-toerenplaten. In zijn laatste mix, Congo Jazz, vertelt hij over de populariteit van Cubaanse muziek in midden Afrika, over "oerwoudmuziek", zoals de critici vroeger de Jungle music omschreven en de geboorte van de gospelmuziek dankzij Tommy A. The 90th Doctor Jazz Dag ( = Doctor Jazz Day), in the past known as the Doctor Jazz Reunie ( = Reunion), was organized on Saturday the 17th of October 2009 at the Hof van Wageningen in Wageningen, a city in the centre of The Netherlands.

The Doctor Jazz Reunions were started in 1965 in Hotel Florida in Boskoop, a small village near Gouda in the western part of The Netherlands, as a half year meeting for collectors of traditional jazz music by Sjaak Van Glabbeek, present during the concerts, sitting on the first row and a 21 years young Ate Van Delden, now the chairman of the organization. He introduced the audience to the first artist to open the afternoon concerts; a 4 hours show with groups like the Aces of Syncopation, the Red Hot Reedwarmers and the Dixieland Crackerjacks. In the morning an extensive jazz record fair was scedulded which has grown to an important meeting place for jazz record collectors in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

The series of afternoon concerts was opened by Ziya Ertekin, as Blue Flamingo. Ziya Ertekin is a young Disc Jockey. Like DJ's as Maestro and Jules Deelder, one of the best known record collectors and an icon of jazz to the general public, love to present their selections of danceable jazz lp's to entertain the (most) young audience in disco's and clubs - they released their mixes as compilations on records like Blue Note Trips ( Maestro) or series like Deelder Draait / Deelder Draait Door / Deelder lijft Draaien; Ziya restricts himself to play 78rpm records - his passion. He released last year some of his mixes for Excelsior records, titled Oriental Nitty Gritty - Ritmo & Blues and The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection, he presented today in Wageningen. He introduced a small selection of his shellac record collection to the visitors of the Doctor Jazz Dag. Normaal gaat iedereen dansen op mijn muziek, dus voel je vooral niet bezwaard. (= Normally my audience loves to dance to the music, so you need have no qualms about that), he said, but the audience wanted to listen and enjoyed the music. its activities were limited up to tapping the feet. Thanks to the spoken intermezzo's by Ziya the appearing was more then just playing records. He took the audience to a trip along the Caribbean and started with a fragment of the Jelly Roll Morton Library of Congress recordings as made by Alex Lomax in the summer of 1938, where Morton introduces The Spanish Tinge. Ziya told about his trip to Cuba, where he learned the Cuban music and where he found a lot of 78rpm records. He continued his trip into the Caribbean with records found in Costa Rica and Trinidad. In Trinidad he learned about the music of Lionel Belasco, the great calypso composer. Jo introduced you to his music in a previous blog, titled Lionel Belasco. Ziya finished his musical trip in Congo where he found some 78rpm records he will introduce in his second album to be released next year.

I love to share with you a fragment of a TV program, titled DJ met een missie by the VPRO Networks series Vals Plat of Ziya and his records. Ate Van Delden explains in this short documentary the importance of Ziya's mission, referring to the title of the documentary: DJ met een missie. Although it is in Dutch, I'm sure you'll like it! ( thanks Henk for pointing me to this).

Het is fantastisch om te ontdekken dat ook jonge mensen deze muziek ontdekken en leren kennen door optredens als van Blue Flamingo; de muziek, waarop hun opa's en oma's vroeger dansten en muziek maakten, was zo gek nog niet en je kunt er prima op dansen en plezier maken. ( = It is good to learn that young people rediscover this music as played by Blue Flamingo and and it learns that you can enjoy it and dance to it, unashamedly, as their grand parents did years ago: Tonny Van Deijl, the hostess of these performances explained. Music is emotion !! - Maybe this initiative is a start to interest a younger generation to this music.. The next Doctor Jazz Dag is scedulded on Saturday the 17th of April, 2010 - I'm sure it's in their iPhones allready.

De 90ste Doctor Jazz Dag, voorheen de Doctor Jazz Reünie, werd op zaterdag 17 oktober 2009 georganiseerd in het Hof van Wageningen in Wageningen.

De halfjaarlijkse Doctor Jazz Reünies zijn begonnen in 1965 in Hotel Florida in Boskoop als een gezellige bijeenkomst van verzamelaars van traditionele jazzmuziek. De initiatiefnemers waren Jack van Glabbeek, pontificaal tijdens het middagprogramma op de eerste rij aanwezig, en een 21-jaar jonge Ate Van Delden, nu de voorzitter van de vereniging. Hij introduceerde bij het publiek de eerste gast, Ziya Ertekin, in een serie middagconcerten met bands zoals de Aces of Syncopation, de Red Hot Reedwarmers en de Dixieland Crackerjacks. In de ochtenduren wordt traditioneel een groots opgezette jazzbeurs gehouden, die alleen maar lijkt te groeien; het is in ieder geval voor veel jazzverzamelaars uitgegroeid tot een vast ankerpunt in het jaar.

De serie middagconcerten werd geopend door Ziya Ertekin, die optrad als Blue Flamingo, zijn artiestennaam. Ziya Ertekin is een jonge DJ, die ook nog niet onverdienstelijk gitaar en banjo bleek te spelen. DJ's zoals Maestro en Jules Deelder, bij het grote publiek bekend als het icoon van de jazz uit de jaren vijftig, begonnen een paar jaar geleden succesvol met het mixen van dansbare jazzmuziek van lp's uit de jaren vijftig en zestig en brachten die mixen uit op CDs, als zgn. Blue Note Trips ( Maestro) of in de serie Deelder Draait / Draait Door / Deelder Blijft Draaien; Ziya beperkt zich tot de 78-toerenplaten - zijn passie. Een jaar geleden leidde dit tot een CD met daarop zijn eerste drie mixen, Oriental Nitty Gritty - Ritmo & Blues en The Spanish Tinge & The French Connection; deze laatste mix introduceerde hij, in gewijzigde vorm, aan de bezoekers van de Doctor Jazz Dag. Met Normaal gaat iedereen dansen op mijn muziek, dus voel je vooral niet bezwaard, probeerde hij het nog, maar, hoewel het wat oudere publiek genoot van de muziek, werd het vooral luisteren, met een af en toe ritmisch op en neer bewegen van de voet.

Dankzij de gesproken intermezzo's tussen de nummers werd het meer dan alleen maar plaatjes draaien. Ziya begon met een fragment uit de Library of Congress opnamen van Jelly Roll Morton ( opgenomen door Alex Lomax in de zomer van 1938 ), waarin Morton het begrip The Spanish Tinge introduceert. Ziya vertelde over zijn reis naar Cuba, waarvandaan hij terug kwam met een heleboel muzikale indrukken en een tas vol 78-toerenplaten ( ik heb op het vliegveld van Havanna gewoon een douanebeambte omgekocht). Er volgden meer reizen naar het Caribische gebied en tijdens zijn korte optreden draaide hij authentieke 78-toerenplaten uit die streek, afgewisseld door verhalen van zijn reizen. Zo leerde hij in Trinidad de muziek kennen van de grote calypsocomponist Lionel Belasco, waarover Jo al eens eerder in deze blog schreef. Ziya eindigde zijn korte muzikale reis met een opname uit het hart van Afrika, Congo, met een plaat, die terug zal komen in zijn volgende series mixen, die begin volgend jaar zullen verschijnen.

Ziya eindigde zijn optreden met een paar bluesnummers op gitaar en banjo, en liet horen dat hijk ook daar goed mee uit de voeten kan - de bezoekers van de Doctor Jazz Dag werden verrast met een paar traditonele bluesnummers.

Het VPRO programma Vals Plat heeft een tijdje geleden aandacht besteed aan Ziya's werk als DJ in een documentaire getiteld: DJ met een missie. Je zult er ook Ate van Delden in herkennen, die nog eens pleit voor verjonging van de groep liefhebbers van deze muziek; met Ziya als "een "DJ met een missie" komt dat zeker goed ..... Bedankt Henk voor het wijzen op dit fragment.

Een prima initiatief van de organisatie van deze Doctor Jazz Dag. Gastvrouw Tonny van Deijl stak na het optreden haar enthousiasme niet onder stoelen of banken. Het is fantastisch om te ontdekken dat ook jonge mensen deze muziek ontdekken en leren kennen door optredens als van Blue Flamingo; de muziek, waarop hun opa's en oma's vroeger dansten en muziek maakten, was zo gek nog niet en je kunt er prima op dansen en plezier maken. Ziya zei me na afloop deze trend te herkennen - oude nummers komen weer in de top tien terecht - de jeugd is op zoek naar nieuwe klanken. Muziek is emotie en van alle tijden en generaties. Misschien is met dit optreden een aanzet gegeven om ook de jeugd wat meer reden te geven de Doctor Jazz Dagen te bezoeken. De volgende Doctor Jazz Dag staat al in hun mobiele telefoon neem ik aan: zaterdag 17 april 2010.

Blue Flamingo: The Spanish Tinge.

Jazz music seems to be not-done nowadays.... young people have their own music - jazz music doesn't fit into their culture. Jazz music is for eldery grey men. The Rotterdam record collector Ziya Ertekin loves to share his recordings by playing it. No LPs nor CDs, but "old fashion" 78 rpm recordings from his collection. He plays his records on a 1957 Garrard RC-88 with a Fender Vibroberb for some extra amplification. His most favourite records are now reissued on a CD released on the Excelsior label. The Library of Congress Recordings: One of the CDs with the complete set refering the Spanish Tinge.

The Spanish Tinge selection starts with a short fragment of Jelly Roll Morton's 1938 Library of Congress Recordings. These famous Library of Congress Recordings are stored on fourty-four 78rpm records and contain a lenghty interview with Jelly Roll Morton by Alan Lomax, held in 1937. Jelly Roll Morton, who labelled himself as The Creator of Jazz, told the story of Jazz in his own words and a small fragment of that interview was used as a starter for this mix: Maybe you noticed the Spanish Tinge in this tune, Morton says: This got so much to do with the typical jazz idea; if one is not able to put these things of Spanish and West Indies tunes into their music they will never be able to get the right seasoning for jazz; Jelly Roll Morton explains on Spanish Swat - Jazz; a melting pot of cultures. First I felt sorry that Ziya only used such a short fragment of this famous Morton interview, but, as I told before, when I had finished listening this album ........... like the hidden tracks on some Verve albums , Jelly Roll Morton continues his story while playing La Paloma in Blues tempo (on the b-side of Circle 28). Really a great surprise.

On his website Ziya tells about his adoration for the music of Lionel Belasco, the Caribbean piano player, calypso composer and bandleader, who was one of the first to make records around 1914. Great, because I had never heard about this great early piano player until Joergen pointed me to a CD titled Lionel Belasco: Goodnight Ladies and Gents ( The Creole Music of Liuonel Belasco) posted in a contribution titled: Lionel Belasco. Ziya tellis on his website that he fell in love to the Belasco composition Juliana, he found on a Columbia record. He tells about his visit to Port of Spain in Trinidad some years ago, hunting for calypso records and his meeting with cuatrista Robert Munro (a cuatro is a small four-string guitar), who took up his instrument again and is still active nowadays. I found a picture of Robert Munro I love to share and Ziya filmed the man playing his beloved tune Juliana.
In this selection you can find music from Trinidad as played by Alphonso et son Orchestre Typique Antillais and Cuban orchestras like Don Azpiazu and his Havana Casino Orchestra, the man who introduced this kind of music in the States early 1940s. And of course you can listen to the "famous" Juliana tune, as played by Lionel Belasco y su Orquesta.

Robert Munro
When I first read about Ziya Ertekin, who plays his 78s as DJ Blue Flamingo, in The Jazz Bulletin of the Dutch Jazz Archive ( NJA Bulletin number 68 page 43), I was anxious to learn more about this man and his projects. Now, after I've heard the record and read his stories I'm convinced that we have a lot in common. His fascinating for music developed from free jazz to John Coltrane and from Coltrane to Duke Ellington. Toen ik The Mooche van Duke Ellington hoorde op 78-toeren, wilde ik alleen nog maar 78-toeren horen. ( = When I first heard The Mooche by Duke Ellington on a 78rpm record I knew it: No more LPs or CDS, but only 78rpms for me ......) I share his fascination for music from the Caribbean, which reveals itself in my case in my adoration of Brazilian Choro music. I enjoy the way he shares his collection ( the transfer and sound of this selection is really great). I feel the same passion for jazz and other related music in his record and website. ( this morning it was not active - sorry) Don't forget to visit it: it has great stories ( unfortunally for you the stories are all in Dutch - maybe you should take a course ..... ) and label shots.

CHARLIE PARKER: 88 kaarsjes

Als Charlie Parker nog steeds bij ons zou zijn geweest ( hij overleed op 12 maart 1955 op 35 jarige leeftijd) dan zouden er vandaag 88 kaarsjes op zijn verjaardagstaart gestaan hebben. Charlie Parker, beter bekend als Bird, groeide in die 35 jaar dat zijn leven duurde uit van een getallenteerde altsaxofonist, die de altsax en de jazzmuziek voorgoed veranderde tot een haast mytische legende, zwaar gedrogeerd en eenzaam gestorven aan de gevolgen van zijn verslavingen. Het lijkt toeval, maar werd niet op deze zelfde dag, 50 jaar geleden, een jongetje geboren, die ze Michael noemden, die opgroeide binnen een muzikale familie, beroemd werd en nu, "oud", verminkt en eenzaam, als een karikatuur van zichzelf, zijn vijftigste verjaardag viert op zijn landgoed?

BLUE FLAMINGO: EEN SPAANS TINTJE

De Rotterdamse platenverzamelaar Ziya Ertekin deelt zijn verzameling met iedereen die het wil horen, door zijn platen te draaien; geen LP's of CD's, maar ouderwetse breekbare schellakplaten. Zijn mooiste platen heeft hij nu overgezet op CD, zodat nu ook thuis geluisterd kan worden.

Maybe you noticed the Spanish tinge in this tune ( = Misschien heb je het Spaanse tintje wel gemerkt in dit nummer), zegt Jelly Roll Morton met een ietwat nazale stem op één van de Library of Congress Recordings: This got so much to do with the typical jazz idea ( = Dit heeft alles te maken met het begrip jazz) if one is not able to put these things of Spanish and West Indies tunes into their music they will never be able to get the right seasoning for jazz (= .. als je niet in staat bent om elementen uit Spaanse of Westindische nummers te gebruiken in je muziek, dan zul je nooit je Jazz "op smaak.)
