Miles Davis in Amsterdam

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Fifty years ago, on the 4th and 5th of December 1957, Miles Davis recorded the sound track for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. - some days later, on the 8th of December 1957, he played at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

In October 1957 Miles Davis had started a new quintet in New York featuring Cannonball Adderley (as John Coltrane couldn't join) and they made their debut in a tour labeled as the Jazz for Moderns. This group contained Miles Davis on trumpet, Julian Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers bass and Philly Joe Jones drums. The final concert was at Carnegie Hall, New York early October together with some more great names, including George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan and Chico Hamilton. Miles Davis performed with his group in four numbers. When the tour had finished Miles left for Europe.

As I told in a previous blog last week, one of the major events was the making of the soundtrack for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. During this short trip to Europe, Miles also played some concerts, like a week in Club St. Germain, and two more in Paris at The Olympia Theatre and the Salle Gaveau, one concert in Brussels, in Amsterdam and Stuttgart. The concert scedulded in The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on the 8th of December, now 50 years ago, at 20.00 hrs. with his quintet, featured Miles Davis on trumpet, Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger at the piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and Kenny Clarke drums. This concert has been recorded, but never released on CD as far as I know. During the first set the quintet played: Woody'n You, Bags Groove, What's New, But Not For Me and Night in Tunesia. The second set opened with Four, then Walking, Well You Needn't, Round Midnight and Lady Bird. A great concert with Miles as the star, in my opinion. His accompanists, René Urtreger at the piano, a young Barney Wilen on tenor sax played very well, and although Miles was the "star", they accompanied Miles in a great way. There are some rumours, that Miles wasn't so happy with these men, as he had said to Barney Wilen, while on stage, between some solos: Man, why don't you stop playing these awful notes. It is a fact that Miles wasn't always understand by his critics in Europe, especially in Paris. I told about some troubles in a previous blog as Miles didn't announce the tunes, but just played one tune after the other, like he did at the Amsterdam concert. When Miles cuts short the applausse and moves efficiently from number to number, it's not from contempt of the public, André Hodeir wrote. He wants to keep the concentration both for the public and the musicians. Another incident happened at his first show at The Olympia Theatre, where Miles didn't appear in time at the theatre. His quintet had started without Miles. They played Walkin' and it sounded fine, but no Miles Davis. Barney took a tenor solo, and as he was finishing, backing away from the microphone, Miles appeared from the wings and arrived at the mike without breaking stride, just in time to start playing - an impressive entrance.

Yesterday I enjoyed this Amsterdam concert and it sounded great to me. Isn't it remarkable that it seems that jazz music has no best-before-date !!

Tijdens de eerste set speelde het kwintet Woody'n You, Bags Groove, What's New, But Not For Me en Night in Tunesia; tijdens de tweede set Four, Walking, Well You Needn't, Round Midnight en Lady Bird.

When Miles cuts short the applausse and moves efficiently from number to number, it's not from contempt of the public.

Fifty years ago, on the 4th and 5th of December 1957, Miles Davis recorded the sound track for the film Ascenseur pour L'échafaud. This film made by Louis Malle, became one of the most famous French films, known to the general public thanks to the great soundtrack played by Miles Davis.

Miles Davis was invited for a three-week tour through Europe. He performed in five concerts with an European Quintet featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger at the piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and Kenny Clarke drums. The French producer Marcel Romano wanted to make a short film of a rehearsing session with Miles Davis, but this idea was rejected. Then he heard about the new film, produced by Louis Malle, who was interested in the music of Miles Davis too, and the idea was born.

Miles Davis was asked if he wanted to make the sound track for that film after he was informed about the cast, the story and the plot. I agreed to do it and it was a great learning experience, because I had never written a music score for a film before. (Miles Davis in his autobiography Miles.). While on tour through Europe he wrote down some ideas for the music and during a one week gig at the Club St. Germain in Paris he had a piano in his hotel room to compose the music. French journalist were rather critical and piqued due to the fact that Miles didn't announce his music on stage. .... a lot of French critics got mad when I couldn't talk from the bandstand and introduce tunes like everyone else did, because I thought the music spoke for itself. They thought I was arrogant and snubbing them. They were used to all those black musicians who came over there grinning and scratching up on stage.

On the 4th and 5th of December 1957 Miles Davis went to the Poste Parisien studios and played with his quintet, while Louis Malle projected the scenes of the film. They played very concentrated and in four hours the recording session had been finished.

The film was released in French as Ascenseur pour L'Échafaud, in England as Lift to the Scaffold, in the US as Frantic and in The Netherlands just as Lift naar 't Schavot.
Finally I love to share with you some images made during Miles Davis career with the music for the film Ascenseur pour l' Échafaud.

A few days later Miles Davis had a concert at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw ( 8 December 1957). I

Nederlands ( To the English translation )

I agreed to do it and it was a great learning experience, because I had never written a music score for a film before. .. a lot of French critics got mad when I couldn't talk from the bandstand and introduce tunes like everyone else did, because I thought the music spoke for itself. They thought I was arrogant and snubbing them. They were used to all those black musicians who came over there grinning and scratching up on stage.
