LEO CUYPERS: A TWO-FINGER PIANO PLAYER?
One of the Dutch jazz piano players of the 1970s I remember to have heard in concerts at the Nieuwe Muziek in Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, was Leo Cuypers. He was active in the so-called free jazz scene, active in the Netherlands in bands like the Willem Breuker Kollektief and the ICP ( = Instant Composters Pool).

This record was made just after Leo had left the Willem Breuker Kollektief. The liner notes on the cover by Wim Van Eyle, one of the compilers of the Dutch Jazz and Blues Discography, tells extensively about the recording session, organized on the 20th of July 1981 in the VARA Studio number 2 in Hilversum, the "radio" city in the center of The Netherlands. This Trio recording is rather unique, as Leo loves to play solo piano - een tweevingerige pianist ( = a two-finger piano player) critics said, but Wim Van Eyle refutes this in the first paragraph: Zijn solo's in stukken als Newborn en Bim Bam Beieren zijn een smak techniek, waarmee voornoemde kritici wel een heel eind het bos in gestuurd worden. (= His solo's on the piano in pieces like Newborn and Bim Bam Beieren show a remarkable technique which learns that his critics were wrong ).

Leo, we gaan spelen als een echt jazztrio en we maken een Flanagan-achtige LP van. (= Leo, Let's play like a real jazz-trio and make a Flanagan-like album ), Han Bennink must have said. Han Bennink, I still remember him as a highly inventive percussionist, who surprised in every concert my brother and I joined in Middelburg. He could make "music", "sounds" "rhythms" "noise"( whatever you like), on every object available. And nowadays he is still active as an artist and percusssionist in contemporaty music.
Some tunes need some explanation, like Powel, of course dedicated to piano player Bud Powell and Newborn, dedicated to Phineas Newborn Jr., a piano player who was known for his dazzling technique. Bim Bam Beieren, a waltz tune, sounds really great and the tune Badness Piece refers to Frank Wright, a US saxophone player who lived in France and I must have heard him live in those days, although I don't remember where or when ( Maybe in the 1970s in B14 in Rotterdam?). Leo Cuypers shows that he is a real solo piano player in the ballad Geraldine.

DON BYRON - 50

Vandaag viert Don Byron zijn vijftigste verjaardag. Hij groeide op in New York in een muzikaal gezin; vader speelde in een calypsoband en moeder was pianiste.

Hij studeerde klarinet en ging spelen in een salsaband, maar raakte geinteresseerd in de jazz. Hij maakte een plaat gewijd aan de klezmermuziek, die hem bekendheid gaf: Don Byron Plays The Music Of Mickey Katz. Dankzij dit project werd hij een veelgevraagd artiest in dit genre. De afgelopen twintig jaar is hij ook te vinden in de moderne jazz met musici als David Murray, Bobby Previte en Bill Frisell. Bobby Previte was hier in mei van dit jaar te beluisteren op het International Jazz Festival van Middelburg. Zijn platen raken vaak ook andere muziekstijlen, zoals de opnamen met zijn Existential Dred, waarin hij o.a. optreedt met dichter / rapper Sadiq Bey, pianist Uri Gaine, bassist Regggie Washington en slagwerker Ben Wittman.

Zijn opnamen, waarbij hij Latijns-Amerikaanse ritmen, funk, rap, pop en jazz mixed met politiek en African-American poetry gaan me allemaal iets te ver. Hij speelde ook mee in de cast van de film Kansas City en, zoals geregelde bezoekers van deze blog wel weten, boeit de muziek van die film me en daarom heb ik dan ook twee filmfragmenten gekozen uit die film. In het eerste fragment hoor je hem in een blues, waarbij hij laat horen dat hij, ondanks dat zijn muziek tegenwoordig erg modern is, hij weet waar zijn wortels liggen. Hij speelt hier als een regelrechte kloon van Lester Young de Riff Blues.

Het tweede fragment komt ook uit de film Kansas City en wordt gespeeld door twee bassisten, Ron Carter en Christian McBride, die samen Duke Ellington's In My Solitude spelen, met Don Byron in de tweede helft op klarinet. Zo hoort jazz je te raken.
