Today not an extensive blog - great music by the McKinney's Cotton Pickers, today 80 years "young" - recorded for Victor - music that is now almost forgotten - music, I haven't heard last night, as all members of the band are dead now. Even Hank Jones, who should have celebrated his 90th birthday on stage, but returned "ill" to the States by plane, was just a ten years old boy. So, not a blog made early in the morning at six, but some hours later after a refreshing sleep .........

Recorded in Chicago on the 11th and 12th of July 1928 for Victor.
Eighty years ago, nine tunes were recorded in two sets for Victor by a "new" band, the Mckinney's Cotton Pickers. This band was directed by Don Redman, a splendid alto sax player and vocalist from the Fletcher Henderson Band, but, above all, a great arranger. He became the musical director of this band - the man, who gave the band its name, William McKinney only did the business affairs.
These two recording sessions, on the 11th and the 12th of July 1928, were Don Redman's first recordings with the McKinney's Cotton Pickers and for me it is one of the great band from the late 1920s. I always have liked its music - tunes like Gee, Ain't I Good To you?, Wherever There's A Will, Baby, I'll Make Fun For You and Miss Hannah - melodies that stick into your head, where made during the most fruitfull years of the band. Although the name suggests that this band came from the far south, it is not - it's a Detroit band, that only came to the big cities Chicago and New York to make recordings. The musicians who played during these first two sessions are rather unknown - skilled sidemen, who never became famous, but thanks to Don Redman they sound great! The tune Shim-Me-Sha-Wabble was not arranged by Don Redman, but by the first arranger of the band, John Nesbitt. who played the trumpet.
Don Redman started his own band in 1931, the Don Redman Orchestra with his known theme song The Chant of the Weed - maybe a great subject as a Hot Hits subject for a next blog.

Dit is de titel van een blog, gemaakt door Sara Gavanovich uit Rome ( Italië), opgedragen aan deze Keep Swinging webblog en aan de Oscar Aleman blogs, met daarin een kort filmfragment met Oscar Aleman, waarin haar basspelende papa Luis ( = haar vader Luis Gavanovich) en tio Manuel ( = oom Manuel Gavinovich) op de viool te horen zijn. Ik vertelde over deze twee muzikanten al in een eerdere bijdrage, getiteld Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing, dat ik volgende week ook in de Nederlandse vertaling zal plaatsen. Vandaag een blog over prachtige muziek, tachtig jaar jong, muziek van de Mckinney's Cotton Pickers, een band, die nu bijna helemaal vergeten is, omdat geen enkele muzikant uit die bands nog leeft, laat staan optreedt; zelfs Hank Jones, die gisteren zijn negentigste verjaardag op het Northsea Jazz Festival zou vieren, maar "ziek" teruggevlogen was naar de States, was toen nog maar tien jaar. Tachtig jaar geleden werden negen titels opgenomen in twee opnamesessies voor Victor door een "nieuw" orkest, the Mckinney's Cotton Pickers. Deze band werd muzikaal geleid door Don Redman, een uitstekend altsaxofonist en zanger uit de Fletcher Henderson Band, maar, bovenal, een groot arrangeur. Don Redman was de muzikale leider - de man die de band zijn naam gaf, William McKinney, bestierde alleen de zakelijke kant. Deze twee opnamesessies, op 11 en 12 juli 1928, waren Don Redman's eerste opnamen met de McKinney's Cotton Pickers en voor mij één van de beste bands die de jaren twintig afsloten. Ik heb altijd een zwak gehad voor dit orkest met schitterende nummers als Gee, Ain't I Good To You?, Wherever There's A Will Baby, I'll Make Fun For You en Miss Hannah - melodieën, die op mijn trommelvlies geëtst lijken - nummers, gemaakt tijdens de meest succesvolle jaren van dit orkest. Hoewel de naam suggereert dat de band oorspronkelijk uit het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten kwam, hebben we hier te maken met een orkest dat uit Detroit kwam; een band die, opvallend, zelfs nooit echt in de grote steden als Chicago en New York optrad en daar alleen kwam om opnamen te maken. De musici in dit orkest zijn alle tamelijke onbekende ervaren begeleiders gebleven en dankzij Don Redman staat hier een geoliëd orkest. Thank you, Hans, for pointing to a great band - and to Don Redman. The MCP band also recorded under the name of Chocolate Dandies around 1930, but the main output is from 1926-29. I have most of this material on two 2-LP sets from the RCA Black/White series (issued 1980s), hot stuff! I'm especially fond of "Zonky", a tune also recorded by Fats Waller, who in fact recorded with MCP in a couple of session. Anyway, thanks again for pointing our readers to a great band of the 1920s.

Our region did not have the fortunes of having a Jazz festival ever. I wish we had one too. I just love jazz and the historical importance it has.
