Rita Reys
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
Within a few days the second International Jazz Festival of Middelburg will take off with an opening concert of Rita Reys, Europe's First Lady of Jazz. The concert will take place at the Stadsschouwburg in Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland ( The Netherlands)
Rita Reys is one of the crowd pullers of the festival sceduled from 9th up to the 12th of May 2008. On Friday night jazz will be played in numerous bars in the city, during the so-called Kroegentocht (= bar hopping). You can find all information about the festival at their website.
Rita Reys started her career singing in a hawaiian band and thanks to her father, who was a saxopone player, she started to sing as a 18 year old woman in his Johnny Jansen Orchestra. During the 1940s she sung in bands like Lex Van Spall's, and the Piet Van Dijk Orchestra in which she met her husband Wessel Ilcken. In 1950 she became the vocalist in the Wessel Ilcken Sextet and they made numerous tours all along Europe, but also to the States where she sung in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with Mat Matthews, Chico Hamilton and Jimmy Smith. The Wessel Ilcken groups of the 1950s featured Wessel Ilcken on drums, Pim and Ruud Jacobs, on piano and bass and Rita Reys doing the vocals.

In 1957 Wessel Ilcken passed away and Rita married Pim Jacobs. The first tune I love to share with you is from this period featuring The Pim Jacobs Trio, with

During the 1960s and the years onwards Rita became a sought after vocalist and she performed with numerous international artists and bands, but most of all with the trios of her husband Pim and her brother-in-law Ruud; both were the first jazz musicians I heard as a teenager in the Prins van Oranje in Goes in 1968 at one of their schoolconcerts. Ruud Jacobs performed a month ago with the Trio Peter Beets, who played a tribute to Oscar Peterson in the Porgy
en Bess Jazz club, is still active in music and celebrated last weekend his 70th birthday in Het Bimhuis in Amsterdam together with all his friends including Benjamin Herman, Han Bennink and, of course, Rita Reys. I love to share with you a fragment from a more recent performance ( well, recent ....? It's from 1990) with the Pim Jacobs Trio, featuring Pim ( who passed away July 1996) and Ruud Jacobs with Peter Ypma on drums.

Thanks to Joergen Larsen from Denmark this daily weblog continued during our short stay in Denmark. Thanks Jo for the interesting subjects you discussed in the blog; I'm sure a lot of visitors have liked your choices. We had a pleasant time in your country and I will later look back on these days. In one of his contribution, a few days ago, he mentioned the publication of the 800th Keep Swinging blog in his contibution of the 3rd of May 2008, titled Black and Tan Fantasy, since its start February 2006. He forgot to mention, that he published his 150th weekly publication, titled Choro das 3 in radio UOL of his weekly Choro-Music blogspot. This Choro blog is really unique as it is one of the few sites in the English language dedicated to this Brazilian "jazz" music, named Choro. Congratilations, Joergen, with your 150th blog. It's great !!
Art Farmer - Hank Mobley - Horace Silver - Teddy Kotick - Louis Hayes. ( back beat - home cookin' - metamorphosis - my one and only love - no smokin' - soulville )

Like Someone In Love & Relaxin' At The Camarilla

( Hans Koert - keepswinging@live.nl)
