Ruby Braff

This time a compilation of tunes made by Ruby Braff on the Affinity label, titled The Mighty Braff. To be honest - each time when I find this CD in my collection it feels as if I should sell it. Maybe it's because of the cover, that I don't like it - the pink marbled cover. It looks old fashioned. Maybe it's because I seem to remember, we had an LP in the 1960s, something like Alle Dertien Goed ( All Thirteen Tracks Okay - a cheap Dutch popular serie of popular music LPs) titled something like Thirteen All Time Dixieland Hits In Super Stereo. Several times I was on the point to sell this CD, but each time I gave it a final chance and each time I had to admit that the music wasn´t as bad as I thought. All ingrained prejudices in my case.
Ruby Braff, born March 1927 in Boston passed away three and a half year ago. His career encloses a period of 50 years. He started his career in the bebop era, but his style could be best labeled as swing / mainstream. He learned to play the cornet aged eight years old as his parents found a saxophone to hefty for such a small boy. Louis Armstrong was his master. In the late 1940s he started to play and in 1949 he performed together with Edmond Hall ( NOT the Edmond Hall I mentioned in my Ross De Luxe Syncopators contribution some days ago) in the Boston Savory Café. Other great names in his early career where Vic Dickerson and Pee Wee Russell. During the 1950s it was difficult to find enough work, as his style of playing was too traditional for the average jazz fan used to bebop and the cool westcoast style bands. His appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 brought him some recognition.
This compilation of tunes, The Mighty Braff, are in fact three Bethlehem LPs he made during this period, all recorded within the space of six months. The three albums are: ( October 1954) Ruby Braff Swings (Bethlehem BCP 1005) - ( December 1954) Ruby Braff - Ball At Bethlehem (Bethlehem BCP 1034) and ( March 1956 ) Ruby Braff - Holiday In Braff (Bethlehem BCP 1032 ). These three sessions contain quartet and sextet recordings, and also with an orchestra and learns me that Ruby Braff was a skilled trumpet player that played in the swing - mainstream style and that he earns the recognition he deserves, especially from me !! - I'm not going to sell this album, so, please don't react on that !!
I found two fragments featuring Ruby Braff; an old one, from 1960, sorry, but the quality isn't very good, and a fragment of a concert in 1991.

Dit is een verzamel-CD van titels van Ruby Braff uitgebracht op het Affinity label, getiteld The Mighty Braff. Eerlijk gezegd; iedere keer als ik de CD tegen kom in mijn verzameling heb ik de neiging hem weg te doen. Misschien heeft het met de voorkant te maken - dat roze gemarmerde papier geeft het een truttige oubollige uitstraling, Misschien komt het omdat we vroeger een LP hadden, getiteld zoiets als Alle Dertien Goed with Thirteen All Time Dixieland Hits In Super Stereo. Ik heb al verschillende keren de neiging gehad om de CD weg te doen, maar toch krijgt hij elke keer weer een kans. En terecht ........... want de muziek is toch nog niet zo gek. Het vooroordel neem ik helemaal voor mijn rekening.
Ruby Braff, geboren in maart 1927 in Boston, overleed drieeneenhalf jaar geleden. Zijn carriere omspant een periode van vijftig jaar. Hij begon zijn loopbaan als trompettist in de beboptijd, maar zijn spel is het best te omschrijven als swing - mainstream. Hij leerde cornet spelen toen hij acht was, omdat zijn ouders hem te klein vonden voor zo'n grote saxofoon. Louis Armstrong en Bix Beiderbecke werden zijn grote voorbeeld. Hij begon in de jaren veertig te spelen en in 1949 vinden we hem terug in de Boston Savory Café, waar hij optreedt met Edmond Hall (niet de Edmond Hall waar ik het onlangs in mijn Ross De Luxe Syncopators bijdrage over had). Hij trad ook op met andere grote namen als Vic Dickenson en Pee Wee Russell. In de jaren vijftig was het moeilijk om aan werk te komen, mede omdat zijn stijl niet meer zo aansloeg bij het naar bebop en west coast jazz hunkerende publiek, maar toch wist hij zich staande te houden en mede dankzij een indrukwekkend optreden tijdens het Newport Jazz Festival van 1954 krijgt hij steeds meer erkenning. Deze verzamel-CD, Mighty Braff, bevat de muziek van drie Bethelehem LPs., die hij gedurende deze periode maakte; steeds zes maanden na elkaar, te beginnen in oktober 1954: Ruby Braff Swings (Bethlehem BCP 1005) - ( december 1954) Ruby Braff - Ball At Bethlehem (Bethlehem BCP 1034) en ( maart 1956 ) Ruby Braff - Holiday In Braff (Bethlehem BCP 1032 ). Het zijn kwartet -en sextetopnamen en registraties met een orkest; van alles wat. Als je luistert moet je wel concluderen dat Rudy Braff een getalenteerd trompettist was, spelend in de swing - mainstreamstijl, zoals we die kennen van het spel van Louis Armstrong. Ruby Braff verdient dus eerherstel; in ieder geval door mij !! Ik ga deze CD gewoon weer terugzetten tussen Perry Bradford en George Braith.

Ik weet niet of t al gemeld is, maar er is maar 1 Edmond Hall ! Hij zit later bij Claude Hopkins, en soleert dan ook op bariton.
