Grant Green

Grant Green is the definite guitarist of the early- sixties organ combos. - that's how I like him the best. Like yesterday when I played his album Am I Blue in my car driving home from work. The CD contains his quintet, featuring Johnny Coles on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, John Patton at the organ and Ben Dixon on drums. Grant Green, of course, on the guitar.
Grant Green started his career in the 1950s with Jimmy Forrest in St. Louis and played the guitar in organ groups like Sam Lazar and Jack McDuff. Lou Donaldson discovered him and introduced him to Alfred Lion of Blue Note who gave him the opportunity to make his own album rightaway and that is remarkable as he didn't started as a sidemen on some Blue Notes, but got his own group to record. Although his first album was not a direct success ( Grant's First Stand ) he made several albums for Blue Note. This, recorded in 1963, is not his best one nor his most inventive. Five standards from the worlds of rhythm and blues and country, with a fat, growling organ sound of John Patton now and then. Great music to relax !! ............ or drive a car !!

Grant Green is het voorbeeld van een gitarist, waaraan je als eerste denkt bij de orgelplaten uit begin jaren zestig. Gisteren draaide ik in zijn plaat Am I Blue in de auto op weg naar huis. Op deze Blue Note plaat speelt Grant Green met zijn kwintet, bestaande uit Johnny Coles op trompet, Joe Henderson op de tenorsax, John Patton achter het orgel en Ben Dixon op slagwerk. Grant Green begon zijn carriere in de jaren vijftig in St. Louis bij Jimmy Forrest in St. Louis en speelde in, toendertijd populaire orgelgroepen als van Sam Lazar en Jack McDuff. Lou Donaldson ontdekte hem en introduceerde Green bij Alfred Lion van Blue Note, die hem wel zag zitten en meteen zijn eigen albums liet opnemen. Opmerkelijk is, dat Grant Green zich niet eerst hoefde te bewijzen als sideman, maar meteen een eigen groep kreeg. Zijn eerste album werd geen succes en werd zelfs lange tijd niet uitgegeven; maar daarna maakte hij heel wat succesvolle platen voor Blue Note. Deze, Am I Blue, dateert uit 1963 en is zeker niet zijn beste of zijn meest inventieve plaat. Er staan vijf standards op, alle uit de wereld van de rhythm and blues, met af en toe zo'n vette growl van het orgel; eigenlijk precies de muziek die bijzonder geschikt is om bij te relaxen of te draaien onder het autorijden.

Ik heb twee filmfragmenten gevonden waarin Grant Green zijn kunnen laat zien; één met twee collega jazzgitaristen Barney Kessel en Kenny Burrell.
