Stormy Weather

The weather forecast for today: A storm at the coast from the southwest. ( 9 on the Beaufort Scale ) Heavy gusts ( up to 110 km / hrs.) And a lot of rain .......

Time to remember Stormy Weather written and composed by Arlen and Koehler.

The tune was originally written for Cab Calloway, but he was not present at the time Ethel Waters recorded the song for the first time in 1933. It was at that occcasion that Ethel Waters sung for the first time as a black artist for a white audience.

The song was recorded many times. I have found some fragments for you to illustrate some different versions.

One of the version you won't forget is the one sung by Billie Holiday. I haven't found it on film, but this charming vocalist, called Tam, sings it in the way Billie Holiday did it.

De weersvoorspelling voor vandaag liegt er niet om: Een zuidwesterstorm aan zee (windkracht 9 BF). Windstoten tot 110 km/uur. En een heleboel regen.

Tijd om Stormy Weather, gecomponeerd en geschreven door Arlen en Koehler weer eens uit de kast te halen.

Het nummer werd origineel gechreven voor Cab Calloway, maar die was er niet bij toen Ethel Waters het nummer voor het eerst opnam in 1933. Bij die gelegenheid werd er overigens ook geschiedenis geschreven aangezien Ethel Waters als zwarte zangeres voor het eerst optrad voor een blank publiek. Het lied werd op vele manieren uitgevoerd en op de plaat gezet. Ik heb verschillende fragmenten gevonden van optredens.

Dit is de Cab Calloway versie uit 1933 met de Nicholas Brothers.

Een andere sympathieke versie is die van Billie Holiday maar die heb ik niet op film gevonden. Wel met een charmante zangeres Tam, die het zingt op de manier zoals Billie Holiday dat deed.
