Saturday evening: Miles Davis on the audio - Miles Davis and John Coltrane in duel. It sounds great. It fits in that very moment. It sounds fresh, modern, perfect - as if it is made for me at the very moment, but ..... than I realize that this music was made 47 years ago: April 1960 - Live in The Hague.
1960: Seventy-five kilometres to the south, in a straight line, a boy, nine years old, looks into the camera, of the photographer. He is in school and his world is limited to the island of Zuid Beveland, in the southwest part of the 
Netherlands, where he lives. He has been to Rotterdam to his aunt and uncle and maybe one time to the forests in Brabant - world tours. His view on the world is the TV-set of his grandparents - the Verrekijker, a TV-program for children, filled with small documentaries, is his only contact with the rest of the world.
The only record in the house might have been the free soundsheets Het Beste ( Reader's Digest) sent around: Gratis luisterproef - Een muzikale rondreis in-een-notedop met fragmenten uit Wonderful World Wonderful Music. ( Free sample - A musical round trip in a nutshell with fragments from Wonde

Zaterdagavond: Miles Davis op de geluidsinstallatie - Miles Davis en John Coltrane in duel. Het klinkt goed - het past allemaal precies. Het klinkt nieuw en fris; alsof het voor mij op dat moment gecreërd wordt.
Dan realiseer ik me dat deze muziek 47 jaar geleden werd gemaakt: april 1960 - Live in Den Haag
1960: Vijfenzeventig kilometer naar het zuiden, hemelsbreed, kijkt een jongen, negen jaar oud, recht in de camera van de fotograaf. Hij zit op school en zijn wereld is niet veel groter dan het eiland waar hij op woont - Zuid Beveland, in het zuidwesten van Nederland. Hij is wel eens naar Rotterdam geweest, naar zijn oom en tante of naar de bossen in Brabant. Wereldeizen (of zoals ze in Zeeland zeggen, Batse reizen). Zijn kijk op de wereld krijgt hij van de TV, bij zijn opoe en opa - van het programma De Verrekijker, dat korte documentaires uitzendt.
Van Miles Davis of John Coltrane heeft hij nog nooit gehoord. Misschien heeft hij wel eens een showorkest, als de Skymasters op de TV gezien - Willem Duys. Zijn opa, die het ritme van de muziek meetikt op de tafel. De plaatselijke muziekvereniging Con Amore lijkt een logisch vervolg na de blokfluitlessen.

Hoy Hans,
Your philosophical wanderings about the relativity of time and space may not be unusual among people of our age. Anyway, the intense look of the young person on the photo suggests an immediate growing interest in the world outside the location where the photo was shot. Maybe you did not know Miles and Coltrane at that particular moment, but you were bound to later telling from your intense look at the world. And then again, as Mr. Shakespeare said, you can find a world in a grain of sand. The usual comment following such a statement may occasionally be - So what!
