Ron Carter - Third Plane

Three skilled accompanists on one stage. They play together for the first time on Miles Davis Seven Steps To Heaven ( May 1963); Ron Carter - Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams.

Fourteen year later they gather at the Automatt in San Francisco and make a record titled Third Plane.

Although all three participants are equal listed Ron Carter is the leader of the trio.

Ron Carter started his carreer as a jazz musician with the Chico Hamilton Quintet late 1950s and recorded with Eric Dolphy and Don Ellis in 1960. In the years previous to his debut at the Miles Davis Quintet he perfromed and recorded with Randy Weston, Cannonball Adderley, Jaki Byard and Thelonious Monk. In 1963 he joined Miles Davis until 1968. He is, up to now, a very sought after bass player and is to be found on thousand recordings with bands like the New York Jazz Quartet, the so-called V.S.O.P., the Milestone Jazzstars with Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Al Foster. In the 1970s he started to make records as a leader (like this Third Plane session) and sometimes used a second bass, to mark the time and keep the harmony, so he could play his bass as a solo instrument.

The Third Plane album is not his most important production, neither his best one, but it is a great album if you want to hear him play solo on his instrument.

Mind that this record was made in the mid seventies, in a period that a jazz trio like the Carter-Hancock-Williams Trio, with only accoustic instruments, was not very popular.

Both Herbie Hancock at the piano and Tony Williams on drums are skilled musicians, both with a large record of service, should be mentioned here, but I'll keep that subject for another blog.

The trio plays six tunes; Carter plays a great role in Stella By Starlight and Hancock's Dolphin Dance. The other tracks, Third Plane, United Blues, Lawra and Quiet Times demonstrate that these three musicians have played together for a long time.

I found a small fragment of a performance with the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s where you see and hear the three musicians as the rhythm group of Miles' Quintet. Enjoy it.

Drie ervaren muzikanten samen in de studio. Ze speelden voor het eerst samen op het Miles Davis album Seven Steps To Heaven ( May 1963); Ron Carter - Herbie Hancock en Tony Williams.

Veertien jaar later komen ze weer bij elkaar in de Automatt in San Francisco en maken ze de LP Third Plane.

Hoewel de drie musici volkomen gelijkwaardig zijn, is het Ron Carter die de leiding neemt in het trio.

Ron Carter begon zijn carriere als jazzmusicus bij het Chico Hamilton Quintet eind jaren vijftig en nam platen op met Eric Dolphy en Don Ellis in 1960. In de jaren voorafgaand aan zijn belangrijke periode met Miles, speelde hij met Randy Weston, Cannonball Adderley, Jaki Byard en Thelonious Monk. In 1963 komt hij bij het Miles Davis Quintet en blijft daar, met Herbie Hancock en Tony Williams, tot 1968.

Hij is, tot nu toe, een erg gewild basist en speelt dan ook op wel duizend opnamen mee. Opnamens zoals met het New York Jazz Quartet, met de zogenaamde V.S.O.P., met de Milestone Jazzstars waarin Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner en Al Foster speelden. In de jaren zeventig begin hij platen te maken met zijn eigen groepen ( zoals deze Third Plane opname) en soms huurt hij een tweede basspeler in, die verantwoordelijk is voor de basis van ritme en harmonie, zodat hij zelf op zijn instrument alle ruimte krijgt om te soleren.

Het Third Plane album is niet zijn allerbelangrijkste plaat, ook niet zijn allerbeste, maar wel één waar hij alle ruimte krijgt ( en neemt) om zijn instrument te laten horen.

Bedenkt dat deze plaat opgenomen werd, midden jaren zeventig, in een periode, dat de jazzliefhebbers meer zagen in electrisch versterkte jazz en niet in accoustische trios.

Zowel Herbie Hancock op de piano als Tony Williams op drums zijn ervaren musici. Omdat ik ze niet noem in dit stukje, lijkt het alsof ik ze over het hoofd zie, maar niets is minder waar. Ze hebben beiden hun sporen verdiend in de muziek en ik zal in een latere blog ongetwijfeld aandacht aan ze besteden.

Het trio speelt zes nummers; Carter speelt een grote rol in Stella By Starlight en in Hancock's Dolphin Dance. Op de andere titels, Third Plane, United Blues, Lawra en Quiet Times laten de drie mannen horen dat ze een eenheid vormen en lang samen hebben opgetrokken.

Ik vond een fragment van een optreden met het Miles Davis Quintet uit de jaren zestig, waarin de drie musici de ritmesectie vormen van diens Quintet.
