Man Called Adam

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

Musicians always try to find the ultimate note, the correct accent on the correct place, the most perfect music to make.

Trumpet players, especially in the early days were fond of playing the high C - that was the best to get. In each concert there was such a moment that the trumpet player tried to bring his music to a climax by playing a high note for some time. The audience held its breath and became mad with joy if the musician succeeded.

I haven't seen the film A Man Called Adam, directed by Leo Penn, but in that film is a scene that Sammy Davis Jr., as the trumpet player, finds his end by trying to reach such a climax. Sammy Davis jr. doesn't play the trumpet himself of course - it's Nat Adderley who does the trumpet playing. The film is from 1966 and is a corny back stage melodrama about non-violence and the racial problem. You will recognize Louis Armstrong and of course Sammy Davis. Jr. There are some more jazz musicians in this film, like Billy Kyle, Buster Bailey, Tyree Glenn, Kai Winding, Pops Foster, Jo Jones, Frank Wess en Mel Tormé, so it might be interesting to keep your eyes open for a copy.

Enjoy a fragment of the film.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
