Monty Alexander at Scheldejazz

On Thursday the 15th of May 2008 the Scheldejazz '08 festival in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, started with a performance of the famous Monty Alexander Trio at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club.
In an almost jam packed club Monty Alexander played with his rhythm section, featuring Hassan Shakir on bass and Georges Fludas on drums. It was not Monty's first visit to Porgy en Bess - one and a half year ago, on the 19th of November 2006 he performed with his so-called Montreux Reunion Trio, featuring John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums; a legendary concert in my opinion and Monty showed that he liked to be back in the cozy club. He had even suggested to place some chairs on stage; which indicated, in my opinion, that he felt at home.
During a one and a half hour set he played a variety of tunes from his giant repertoire, like his own compositions Renewal and Sweet Lady. He played a very sensitive, and rather emotional medley of tunes to remember Mr. S, Frank Sinatra, who passed away 10 years ago. I was spotted by Jilly Rizzo who invited me to play in his club in New York City where I accompanied Frank Sinatra. Monty still lives in New York City with his wife, because that city fascinates him; the album My America, was recorded after the 9/11 disaster and is dedicated to New York and his second homeland, America.
During the concert he played some tunes from his native country Jamaica, which learns how versatile his music is. If Monty starts to improvise, his music can go in all directions, from swing, reggae, bebop to merengue, jazz or mento rhythms. And when he starts to play a tune, like Fungi Mama, he might mix all those rhythms to a great composition. My goal is to uplift, he once said in an interview: The piano, to me, is a vehicle for connecting to other human beings. I'm very open to all forms of music. I'm not a bebop musician, I'm not a calypso musician, I'm not a reggae musician. I'm a musician who loves it all.
Bass player Hassan Shakur, who's real name is Gerald Foster Wiggins jr. ( not to be mixed up with his father, piano player Gerry Wiggins sr. ) happended to be a experienced musician, who played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra for years. He is my right hand, or in fact my left: Monty once said about him and, to be honest, his bass playing and above all his enthusiasm and charisma remembered me to his collegue-on-bass John Hamilton, who performed with Monty on this same spot November 2006. Georges Fludas is rather new in Monty Alexander's rhythm section, and did what you can expect from a drummer man.
The audience showed its enthusiasm and gave the trio what it deserved. After one and a half hour the trio packed in as they had to leave a 5.30 a.m. the next day to Schiphol Airport for a short tour along French jazz clubs.
After the concert I showed Monty some of my LPs, including the one, Zing, I discussed in a previous blog . Yeah, that's an early one - I must have been very young. When I told him he was 23 then, he said: Okey, but the coloured pictures were made much later as this album was reissued. Only the black & white picture in the middle is from that period.

It loves to bring jazz for everybody; Ttis weekend, up to the 18th of May they'll show what that means. On Thursday the festival was opened by mayor Lonink before Monty Alexander and his trio performed at the Porgy en Bess jazz club. Last night the Estrella Acosta y Esquina 25 band perfomed in that same club and the ESP Quintet directed by Arno Francke and Frank Montis could be heard at the Arsenaal Podium. And what to think about the Juke Joints? Our own local blues band from Kwadendamme !!

Op donderdag 15 mei 2008 opende het beroemde Monty Alexander Trio het Scheldejazz '08 festival in een afgeladen Porgy en Bess. Monty Alexander had een ritmesectie meegebracht, die bestond uit Hassan Shakir op bas en Georges Fludas op slagwerk. Het was niet de eerste keer dat Monty de huiskamer van de jazz, Porgy en Bess betrad - anderhalf jaar eerder, op 19 november 2006, was hij hier ook met zijn zgn. Montreux Reunion Trio, bestaande uit hemzelf op de piano, John Clayton op bas en Jeff Hamilton op drums; een legendarisch concert in mijn beleving en ook nu liet Monty Alxander merken dat hij ontzettend genoot van de sfeer in deze gezelligde club. Hij had zelfs voorgesteld een aantal stoelen op het podium te zetten om het publiek nog beter te voelen, hetgeen, volgens mij, aantoonde dat hij zich thuis voelde in Porgy en Bess.

His first concert will be in the afternoon ( 2.30 p.m.) where he'll bring his funky jazz tunes, his Kawinajazz especially for the youth. At 10.00 p.m. he will perform again at the Markt. Other great performances you shouldn't miss are the Westerschelde Big Band, the Basily Boys and Carlo de Wijs. In the whole inner city of Terneuzen you can hear jazz music, like in the cafés and bars and street parades by the N.O. Longfield Jazzcrackers, The Flying Dixies and the Dixieland Streetband.

Monty Alexander had een ritmesectie meegebracht, die bestond uit Hassan Shakir op bas en Georges Fludas op slagwerk. Het was niet de eerste keer dat Monty de huiskamer van de jazz, Porgy en Bess betrad - anderhalf jaar eerder, op 19 november 2006, was hij hier ook met zijn zgn. Montreux Reunion Trio, bestaande uit hemzelf op de piano, John Clayton op bas en Jeff Hamilton op drums; een legendarisch concert in mijn beleving en ook nu liet Monty Alxander merken dat hij ontzettend genoot van de sfeer in deze gezelligde club. Hij had zelfs voorgesteld een aantal stoelen op het podium te zetten om het publiek nog beter te voelen, hetgeen, volgens mij, aantoonde dat hij zich thuis voelde in Porgy en Bess. Tijdens hun anderhalf uur durende set bracht het trio een selectie uit hun uitgebreide repertoire, zoals Monty's eigen composities Renewal en Sweet Lady. Hij speelde een gevoelige, haast emotionele ode aan Mr. S., Frank Sinatra, die de dag ervoor precies tien jaar geleden overleed. I was spotted by Jilly Rizzo who invited me to play in his club in New York City where I accompanied Frank Sinatra ( = Ik werd ontdekt door Jilly Rizzo, die me uitnodigde in zijn club in New York City te komen spelen, waar ik Frank Sinatra mocht gaan begeleiden), legde Monty uit. Monty Alexander woont nog steeds met zijn vrouw in New York, de stad die hem ontzettend boeit; de CD My America nam hij op na de aanslag in New York op het World Trade Centre en is gewijd aan zijn stad en tweede vaderland.
Tijdens zijn optreden speelde hij ook een aantal nummers uit zijn geboorteland Jamaica, waarmee hij weer eens liet zien hoe veelzijdig hij is. Als Monty achter het toetsenbord van de Steinway gaat zitten, begint hij te improviseren en kan het nummer alle kanten op; van swing naar bebop, van reggae naar merengue, van jazz naar mento-ritmen. Hij liet dat horen in het nummer Fungi Mama, een mix van allerlei exotische ritmen. My goal is to uplift. (= Mijn doel is mijn muziek steeds te verbeteren), heeft hij eens gezegd: The piano, to me, is a vehicle for connecting to other human beings. (= Voor mij is de piano het instrument om in contact te komen met anderen) I'm very open to all forms of music. (= Ik sta open voor alle vormen van muziek). I'm not a bebop musician, I'm not a calypso musician, I'm not a reggae musician. I'm a musician who loves it all. (= Ik ben geen bebop, calypso of reggae muzikant. Ik vind alles leuk om te spelen).
Hassan Shakir bleek een zeer ervaren bassist te zijn met een mooie toon. Zijn echte naam is Gerald Foster Wiggins jr. ( niet te verwarren met pianist Gerry Wiggins sr., die zijn vader is ) en hij speelde jarenlang in het Duke Ellington orkest. He is my right hand, or in fact my left, ( = Hij is mijn rechterhand, of eigenlijk mijn linker) heeft Monty eens over hem gezegd en, om eerlijk te zijn, ik was zeer onder de indruk van zijn spel en vooral zijn enthousiasme en uitstraling, die me sterk deed denken aan zijn beroemde collega John Clayton, die ook op deze zelfde plaats in november 2006 bij Monty speelde. Georges Fludas is tamelijk nieuw in Monty Alexander's ritme sectie en kwijtte zich uitstekend van zijn taak.
Het publiek, dat van heinde en ver was gekomen, was enthousiast en kreeg wat het verdiende. Na anderhalf uur spelen hield het trio het voor gezien en zochten ze de kleedkamer op ..... om half zes de volgende ochtend zou de taxi voorrijden om hen naar Schiphol te brengen voor een korte tournee langs Franse jazz clubs.
Na afloop liet ik Monty een paar van mijn LPs zien, waaronder de plaat Zing, die ik in een eerdere blog introduceerde. Yeah, that's an early one - I must have been very young. ( = Ja, dat is één van mijn eerste - ik moet toen nog heel jong zijn geweest). Ik vertelde hem dat hij toen net 23 jaar oud was. Op donderdag opende burgemeester Lonink het festival voordat Monty Alexander en zijn trio aan hun optreden in Porgy en Bess begonnen. Het eerste concert is vanmiddag op half drie; speciaal voor de jeugd zal hij zijn funky jazz muziek, zijn Surinaamse Kawinajazz laten horen. Vanavond om om tien uur speelt hij dan nog een keer op de Markt. Uiteraard kun je vandaag de Westerschelde Big band, de Basily Boys en Carlo de Wijs niet missen. In de hele binnenstad kom je vandaag jazz tegen, in de cafés en op straat de bekende streetparades van orkesten zoals de N.O. Longfield Jazzcrackers, The Flying Dixies en de Dixieland Streetband. Het hoort er allemaal bij ....
