I Like Jazz

The book I Like Jazz was released by Verlag Bärmeier und Nikel in 1960. It contains jazz cartoons made by Hans de Haëm with text of Hans Herder.

In the book itself are cartoons about the history of jazz and about certain jazz artists like Thomas Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Julian Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie and Lester Young ( on the right)

The texts in the book are a hodge-podge of subjects in a rather droll style.

Hans Herders Jazz Thermometer doesn't give the temperature outside, but the temperatures of certain music styles; Art Blakey is kochend and Lennie Tristano is listed as absoluter Nullpunt.

It has an interview with Goethe about Jazz ( Ein imaginäres Interview ), a chapter about instruments, about jazz sayings ( jazz sprichwörtlich ) ( Wer Louis Armstrong nicht ehrt, ist Chris Barber nich wert )

It will be clear that the cartoons in this little book has some value nowadays. They are made in the typically Hans de Haëm style, with fragile lines. The texts are not interested anymore, although it gives some character of an era about humor in jazz.

The cartoons in this blog are showed in negative, so the white lines used to be black in the original.

Het boekje I Like Jazz is uitgebracht door Verlag Bärmeier und Nikel in 1960. Het bevat jazz cartoons van Hans de Haëm met teksten van Hans Herder.

In het boek vind je cartoons over de geschiedenis van de jazz en over bepaalde muzikanten zoals Thomas Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Julian Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie en Lester Young ( zie rechts )

De teksten in het boek zijn een beetje oubollig en een samenraapsel van onderwerpen. Zo is er Hans Herders Jazz Thermometer, die niet de buitentemperatuur aangeeft, maar de temperatuur van bepaalde muziekstijlen ( Art Blakey is kochend en Lennie Tristano daarentegen absoluter Nullpunt).

Er staat een interview in met Goethe over jazz ( Ein imaginäres Interview ), een hoofdstuk over instrumenten, over jazzspreekwoorden ( jazz sprichwörtlich ), zoals Wer Louis Armstrong nicht ehrt, ist Chris Barber nich wert.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat dit boekje vooral interessant is door de schitterende tekeningen die het bevat. Ze zijn gemaakt door Hans de Haëm met fijne pennestreekjes. De teksten hebben alleen historische waarde, aangezien ze een tijdbeeld geven van de humor in de jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw

De tekeningen, die ik voor dit blog geleend heb zijn alle negatief afgedrukt, dus de witte lijntjes zijn in het origineel zwart.
