SATCHMO: OPTREDEN IN VEILINGHAL VAN BLOKKER

Op 10 mei 1959, vijftig jaar geleden, schreef een klein dorpje in de kop van Noord Holland geschiedenis, door de King of Jazz Louis Armstrong te laten optreden. Het concert vond plaats in de plaatselijke veilinghal, waar zo'n 8000 enthousiaste jazzfans een plaatsje gevonden hadden. Het zou een legendarisch concert worden
In de veilinghal van Blokker, een plaatsje tussen Hoorn en Enkhuizen, waar normaal bloemkolen, appels en peren verhandeld werden, trad Louis Armstrong met zijn All-Stars op voor een uitzinnig publiek. Niet bepaald de meest voor de hand liggende locatie voor zo’n belangwekkend concert. Hoe was dat zo gekomen?

In het dorpje Blokker, niet meer dan 3000 inwoners, was, begin jaren vijftig, behalve een paar “verzuilde” jongerenclubs, weinig te beleven voor de jeugd. Twee van hen, Ben Essing en Jan Vis wilden daarin verandering brengen en organiseerden een concert waarop één van de toen populairste bands van Nederland optrad, de Dutch Swing College Band. Dit concert vond plaats op 15 juli 1956 en trok zo’n 5000 bezoekers. Dankzij het feit dat Ben’s vader burgemeester was en voorzitter van de veiling mochten ze gratis gebruik maken van de hal en alle faciliteiten er omheen, zoals de catering, het geluid en licht, het opbouwen van de zitplaatsen, de promotie en kaartverkoop, wat allemaal werd uitgevoerd door tientallen vrijwilligers. Dit concert werd een succes en dat succes smaakte naar meer ……….. Twee jaar later, in 1958, haalden de twee jongens Benny Goodman, The King of Swing, de koning van de swingmuziek, naar Blokker, voor één van de twee Nederlandse optredens van het orkest. Het eerste stond gepland op 14 mei in het Congresgebouw in Amsterdam en het tweede de volgende dag in ……….. de veiling Op Hoop van Zegen in Blokker. Van deze concerten werd door ABC-networks opnamen gemaakt en fragmenten ervan werden uitgezonden in de Verenigde Staten op 3 oktober 1959; in Nederland werd dit concert verslagen door het Polygoon journaal, dat wekelijks het nieuws in de bioscoop bracht. Dit fragment is bewaard gebleven:

Benny arriveert in het plattelandsdorpje in een grote limousine als een echte ster. Een paar dagen na het concert zal hij met zijn orkest het Amerikaanse paviljoen op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Brussel openen; een gebeurtenis, die veel aandacht krijgt van de pers (TV) en waarvan platen werden uitgebracht in de serie Benny in Brussels.

Een jaar later werd er een compleet festival georganiseerd dat een paar dagen duurde. Tijdens dit Blokker Festival traden op Victor Sylvester met zijn orkest, Mieke Telkamp, Greetje Kauffeld en Rita Reys met het Trio Pim Jacobs; de publiekstrekker van het festival was echter niemand minder dan Louis Armstrong and his All Stars.

Hij werd het dorp binnen gereden als een echte King of Jazz, koning van de Jazz, samen op de bok met zijn zangeres Velma Middleton van een boerenkar getrokken door pony's, voorafgegaan door de Jeugddrumband De Westfriese Boertjes. Alle inwoners van het dorp waren hun huizen uitgekomen en het schijnt dat zo’n 50.000 mensen naar het Westfriese dorpje waren getrokken. In de veilinghal warmden groepen als de Micro Solisten uit Zaandam en het Kees Kuyt Combo, dat later nog een mooie prijs tijdens het Loosdrecht Jazzfestival zou winnen, het ongeduldige publiek op.

Iedereen keek uit naar het concert van de Koning van de Jazz zelf en toen Louis met zijn bandleden eindelijk het podium in de veilinghal beklom, kon het feest, onder leiding van zanger, trompettist en showman Satchmo, losbarsten. Zijn All-Stars bestonden uit Trummy Young op trombone, Peanuts Hucko op klarinet, Billy Kyle achter de piano, Mort Herbert op bas en Danny Barcelona op slagwerk. En uiteraard zorgde Louis met onvergetelijk hoge noten op zijn trompet en zijn typische raspige zang, bijgestaan door zangeres Velma Middleton, voor de hoogtepunten. Voor zover ik weet zijn er nooit opnamen bewaard gebleven van dit concert noch filmbeelden. Wel vond ik een fragment van een concert, dat Louis Armstrong met zijn All-Stars een paar maanden eerder in de Houtrusthallen in Den Haag opnam ( 7 februari 1959), waarin Louis met dezelfde mensen op het podium stond. Luister naar "St. Louis Blues" en "La Vie en Rose".

Pas tegen middernacht is de rust in het Westfriese dorpje teruggekeerd. Louis had genoten van het concert en wilde graag terugkomen en dat gebeurde ook zes jaar later, op 26 mei 1965. Een qua bezoekersaantal tegenvallend concert; slechts 1800 fans waren naar Blokker gekomen. Reden voor dit tegenvallende bezoekers aantal was wellicht de voetbalwedstrijd tussen Inter Milaan en Benfica, die op de televisie on het kader van een Eurovisieuitzending uitgezonden werd, maar zeker zal ook de veranderende smaak van de jeugd, die zich ging interesseren voor andere muziekstijlen, er debet aan geweest zijn.

De Blokker Festivals veranderden in popfestivals avant la letter met optredens van groepen als The Pretty Things, zangeres Nana Mouskouri, chansonnier Jacques Brel, artiesten als Vera Lynn, Cliff Richard en, niet te vergeten, één van de hoogtepunten uit de naoorlogse Nederlandse popgeschiedenis, het legendarische optreden van The Beatles op 6 juni 1964, die een dag daarvoor geschiedenis hadden geschreven met een rondvaart door de Amsterdamse grachten.

On the 10th of May, 1959 the great Louis Armstrong performed at a concert in the small village Blokker for an enthusiastic audience of 8000 men. This concert, now 50 years ago, has become legendary !!
In the auction building, where normally apples and pears were sold, of Blokker, between Hoorn and Enkhuizen in the north west part of The Netherlands the Louis Armstrong All Stars performed for the first time in this small rural village. Not the most obvious place for a concert by one of the most famous jazz trumpet players of the world, Louis Satchmo Armstrong himself. How did that happen?



In the small village of Blokker, almost 3000 inhabitants, there’s almost nothing to do in the early 1950s for the youngsters. Two of them, Ben Essing and Jan Vis wanted to change that and organized a concert with one of the most popular Dutch bands from that period, the Dutch Swing College. This concert, scheduled on the 15th of July, 1956, drew an audience of 5000 and became a success. Thanks to the fact that Ben’s father was the mayor of the village, they hadn’t to pay for the auction hall and everything they needed, the catering, the sound and light, the construction of the seats and stage, the promotion and ticket sales was done by volunteers. This concert was very morish and two years later, in 1958, non other than Benny Goodman, The King of Swing, was booked. Benny was touring around Europe and arrived in The Netherlands for two concerts. The first one was scheduled the 14th of May at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the next day ……… in Blokker. These concert were recorded for TV by ABC-networks and fragments televised on the 3rd of October, 1959 in the States, but the village of Blokker was also head news on the Dutch Polygoon Nieuws, the news program showed in the Dutch cinema’s. When he arrived in the village, the people organized the entry of Benny Goodman as a “real” King in a limousine. A few days later Benny would play at the opening of the American Pavilion at the Brussels World’s Fair, which was recorded for TV and released in a series of Columbia records titled Benny in Brussels. A year later a complete festival was organized. During the Blokker Festival which lasted a few days, Victor Sylvester and his orchestra played its dance music, Mieke Telkamp, Greetje Kauffeld and Rita Reys with the Trio Pim Jacobs were some of the other stars, but, the highlight of the festival was the concert by Louis Armstrong and his All Stars.

His entry of the village was on a farm cart together with his vocalist Velma Middleton, preceded by the Jeugddrumband ( = youth drum band) De Westfriese Boertjes. All inhabitants joined the entry and it seems that almost 50,000 people had overrun the village. In the auction hall bands like the Micro Solisten, a local group from Zaandam and the Kees Kuyt Combo, which would win an award at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival later, tried to entertain the impatient audience, but they all had come for The King of Jazz himself.

When, finally, the King has reached the stage, the concert could start. His All-Stars featured Trummy Young on trombone, Peanuts Hucko on clarinet, Billy Kyle at the keys, Mort Herbert on bass and Danny Barcelona on drums. And of course Louis, nick named Satchmo, on the trumpet and uttered his typically raspy vocals and Velma Middleton.

There haven’t been, as far as I know, any recordings or film fragments of the concert. So I love to share with you a fragment of a concert with the same line-up recorded a few month earlier ( 7th of February 1959) in the Houtrusthallen in The Hague. Enjoy "St. Louis Blues" en "La Vie en Rose".

When the successful concert in Blokker had finished at 11.30 p.m., the peace in the small village had soon been restored. Louis sayed about the concert, that he liked it and loved to come back and that happened on a less successful concert on the 26th of May, 1965. Less succesfull as only 1,800 fans had gathered in the auction hall, maybe because of the football game between Inter Milan and Benfica on Dutch television or, more likely, the growing interest by the youth for new music styles.

The Blokker Festivals would develop into a pop festival avant la letter with concerts by the Pretty Things, Nana Mouskouri, Jacques Brel, Vera Lynn, Cliff Richard, Anneke Gröhnloh and, of course, one of the high lights in the Dutch pop history, a concert by The Beatles on the 6th of June 1964 with round trip of the Amsterdam canals the previous day.
