On Sunday afternoon the 5th of October 2008 the Narcissus Quartet performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen in the south west part of The Netherlands. Maybe because the bad weather - we had a lot of rain and wind, but few people had found the entrance of the club in the Noordstraat. And that was not because of the music, because saxophone player Robin Verheyen brought an inspiring concert - a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The Narcissus Quartet features Robin Verheyen on the soprano and tenor saxophone, Jozef Dumoulin at the piano, Clemens Van Der Feen on bass and Flin Van Hemmen on drums.

This Narcissus band contains four talented young Flemish and Dutch jazz musicians. When thhis group was founded, it was named as the Robin Verheyen Quartet, but they changed it into the Narcissus Quartet, to express that they are a collective band without a real leader. During the concert each member gets a chance to present his compositions, except Jozef Dumoulin, who replaced Harmen Fraanje at the keyboard only recently. Don't try to explain why they have chosen the name Narcissus for their quartet: it's just an idea of Finn's mother!
Most tunes played during the concert were new compositions, so if you happen to have its first album, simply titled Narcissus, there was a lot of new music. I haven't heard its first album, so I can't tell you if their music has been developed in a positive way. Some compositions were even nameless or had temporary names like New York 1 or New York 2. The music they played sounded very modest and introverted. The tunes often start with one tone or chord, while the other members could expand the tune with improvisation to a climax, before it finally ended again with one single tone ...... Modest sounds. music that hit you...............

Jozef Dumoulin

It was remarkable to learn that this quartet was a very good team. Robin Verheyen sounded, now and then, like Wayne Shorter (especially on soprano sax) and Jozef Dumoulin leaning forward on the keyboard like Bill Evans or Brad Mehldau. Hij hoeft maar een paar noten van een nieuw nummer te zien en hij speelt mee - inclusief allerlei nieuwe tegen-melodieën ( = He only has to pass his eyes over the sheet music and he can play the tune ... even with new improvisations) Clemens explains during the break between the two sets. Modest well considered sounds.... Clemens Van Der Feen, member of a musical family, raised in Middelburg, in the province of Zeeland, a skilled bass player in modern jazz, although his straw suggest something different, gives the band a solid base. As a thirteen years old kid he played with the Feen Brothers, the family band, on this Porgy en Bess stage at the Schelde Jazz festival.

Flin van Hemmen on drums has a remarkable light way of playing his instrument - his rhythms are transparent and the drum doesn't develop into a bag of noise. This young percussionist was a surprise to me!!

This was the opening concert for the new winter season in Porgy en Bess. After the concert chairman Hans Zuiderbaan listed the concerts to come: Jeff Hamilton Trio; Trio Rein de Graaff with Ferdinand Povel and Pete Christlieb, the Pierre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet, Mona Lisa Overdrive and Benjamin Herman with The Itch. And as a dessert...: Rony Verbiest and Bert van den Brink in a duo performance, but then 2009 has started already in Porgy en Bess - Terneuzen.

RIK MOL IN MIDDELBURG

Vorige week donderdag, 2 oktober 2008, ontving de Zeeuwse trompettist Rik Mol uit handen van de Commissaris van de Koningin Karla Peijs de Stimuleringsprijs 2008 van het Prins Bernard Cultuurfornds Zeeland. Deze uitreiking vond plaats in Porgy en Bess ( Terneuzen) en werd gevolgd door een schitterend optreden van Rik Mol met zijn Quintet. Dit concert werd reeds besproken in een eerdere blog, getiteld: Rik Mol in Porgy en Bess

Wie dit optreden gemist heeft krijgt woensdagavond 8 oktober 2008 een tweede kans, want Rik Mol treedt dan op in het Schuttershof in Middelburg, een optreden georganiseerd door het Muziekpodium Zeeland. Rik Mol brengt Sven Figee mee op hammond, Ben van den Dungen op tenor sax, Jeroen Vierdag op bas en Joost Kroon op slagwerk. Verder zal zangeres Leona niet optreden, zoals aangekondigd. Aanvang 21.30 uur.

Op zondagmiddag 5 oktober 2008 trad in de Porgy en Bess jazzclub in Terneuzen het Narcissus Quartet op. Of het nu door het slechte weer kwam; de zaal was maar matig gevuld en dat kan zeker niet aan de groep rond saxofonist Robin Verheyen hebben gelegen. Zijn Narcissus Quartet was met zijn ingetogen klanken een perfecte zondagmiddag invullingen.

Het Narcissus Quartet, dat deze namiddag acte de presence gaf, bestaat uit Robin Verheyen op sopraan en tenorsax, Jozef Dumoulin op piano, Clemens van der Feen op bas en Flin van Hemmen op slagwerk.

Clemens van der Feen

De groep Narcissus bestaat uit een aantal getallenteerde jonge musici uit Vlaanderen en Nederland. Toen ze een paar jaar geleden begonnen heetten ze gewoon het Robin Verheyen Quartet, maar ze veranderden die naam in het Narcissus Quartet, waardoor ze wilden aangeven als één collectief naar buiten te willen treden. Dat merkte je op het podium vooral doordat er veel eigen composites gebracht werden, gemaakt door de leden van de groep, m.u.v. Jozef Dumoulin, die nog maar kort de pianokruk van Harmen Fraanje heeft overgenomen. Je hoeft overigens geen diep filosofische gedachten te krijgen bij de naam Narcissus: gewoon verzonnen door Flin's moeder.

Flin van Hemmen
Tijdens het concert werden er vooral nieuwe nummers gespeeld en bleef er veel van hun eerste CD, gewoon Narcissus genaamd, bij de kassa liggen. Die eerste plaat werd goed ontvangen, maar aangezien ik hem nog nooit gehoord heb kan ik dar niet over oordelen. Ze speelden veel nummers, die nog geen naam hadden of slechts voorzien waren van een werktitel, zoals New York 1 en 2. De muziek van het Narcissus Quartet klinkt zeer ingetogen en introvert. Nummers, die beginnen uit één enkel accoord of toon, waarmee de andere instrumenten al improviserend komen tot een groter geheel, om tenslotte weer tot één enkele klank uit te doven; introverte klanken - muziek die je raakt ......

Jozef Dumoulin

Opvallend was dat het kwartet als een eenheid klonk. Robin Verheyen deed bij tijd en wijle met zijn sopraansax denken aan Wayne Shorter en Jozef Dumoulin voorover gebogen op het klavier aan Bill Evans of Brad Mehldau. Hij hoeft maar een paar noten van een nieuw nummer te zien en hij speelt mee - inclusief allerlei nieuwe tegenmelodieën, legt Clemens in de pauze uit. Ingetogen weloverwogen klanken. Clemens van der Feen, telg uit een muzikale Zeeuwse familie, die actief is in de moderne jazz, hoewel zijn strooien hoedje anders doet vermoeden, zorgt op zijn bas voor een gedegen fundatie. Hij speelde al op zijn dertiende in Porgy en Bess tijdens het Schelde Jazzfestival in de Feen Brothers. Flin van Hemmen op slagwerk valt op door zijn transparante lichte manier van spelen, waardoor het drumstel niet verwordt tot een boel herrie. Voor mij een verrassing !! Met dit concert van het Narcissus Quartet opende Porgy en Bess haar nieuwe seizoen. Na afloop van het concert somde voorzitter Hans Zuiderbaan de concerten voor het komende kwartaal op: Jeff Hamilton Trio; Trio Rein de Graaff met Ferdinand Povel en Pete Christlieb, het Pierre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet, Mona Lisa Overdrive en Benjamin Herman met The Itch. En als toefje slagroom op de taart: Rony Verbiest en Bert van den Brink samen op het podium, maar dan zitten we al in het nieuwe jaar.

SAMMY PRICE (1908 - 1992 )Today we should commemorate the fact that Sammy Price was born 100 years ago on the 6th of October 1908 in Honey Grove, Texas (US). He started his career in the 1920s as a Charleston dancer and singer at the Alphonso Trent Orchestra.

In the 1930s he played the piano inspired by musicians like Count Basie and Pete Johnson and became Decca's house pianist in New York. He played boogie woogies, accompanied singers like Trixie Smith and Rosetta Tharpe and founded his own band, in which he loved to play the blues. He became a sought after accompanist for blues vocalists travelling all around the world including Europe, but was also a nightclub owner, photographer, politician and undertaker.

V-Disc Record

ENGLISH ( Naar het Nederlands-Vlaamse deel met een voorbeschouwing op het concert van het Narcissus Quartet in Porgy en Bess)

The V-disc has also been one of those records that fascinated me. They were released during the 1940s to entertain the US-troups by the Music Section of the Special Services Divisions. The records were distributed to military personnel all around the world and also on short-wave radio broadcasts.

I think I first heard about these records when I was collecting Fats Waller on records. In September 1943 Fats was asked by Steven Sholes, who worked for the V-Disc ( V for Victory) unit in the Victor Studios in New York City to make a session "for the boys" and Fats recorded several tunes that were released as V-Discs, like Ain't misbehavin'- Two Sleepy People and Sligtly Less Than Wondefull - There's a Gal In My Life ( on V-Disc 33) and some more ..... On most sides Fats gives a spoken introduction: "Hi there fellows. What you say! This is little Fats Waller. My mother is 285 pounds of jam, jive and everything. They got me in on this V-Disc mess here this afternoon, so here't is. so watch out. One of my own ompositions Ain't Misbehavin' and I ain't do ......" These typically spoken Waller-introductions fascinated me and later I learned that during this session, which started in the early afternoon by Fats at the piano and ended, after a short break ( and several bottles of Cutty Sark Whisky later) on the organ late in the evening; the last two tunes were rejected ( probably due to the effects of the whisky). The subtile sound of the organ and the fluent melodic lines are excellent elements in a tune when the whisky bottles are getting empty. Listen to that great version of Solitude, which Fats Waller introduces with a thick tongue: Well boys ... He couldn't be here today - but I got in here today - He's right at my fingertips - Duke Ellington's Solitude. And this is the solitude. Now, stop all the thinking; don't worry 'cause everything's fine.

Can you imagine that I wanted to have such a great V-Disc in my collection? Well, a few years ago I found myself a copy (not a Fats Waller one), but one with Connee Boswell with the Eddy Howard Orchestra and two Ella Mae Morse recordings: Invitation To The Blues and Cow Cow Blues.
I found a small promo fragment by The Andrew Sisters promoting their new V-Disc:

Let me open your eyes ....; the songs on both sides of my V-Disc 325 don't really fascinate me, and, the quality of the record is rather poor, but the fact that I have a real V-disc on the wall feels good !!

The V-Disc records are a treasure for jazz lovers, because these discs were made during the so-called record ban by the American Federation of Musicians, the period between July 1942 and November 1944. V-Discs were allowed because they were not sold, but sent to the soldiers as a gift. V-Discs were released for some period after the war, but it stopped definitely in the late 1940s
I hope, once, to find a copy of the Ain't Misbehavin'- Two Sleepy People V-Disc nr. 33 ( or the Navy version, with blue instead of red at the bottom of the label) nr. 133 ) in excellent condition ( E++), unplayed and still with the smell of Waller's Cutty Sark whisky

NARCISSUS QUARTET
Het komende weekend, op zondag 5 oktober 2008, treedt het Narcissus Quartet op in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, het eerste reguliere jazzconcert van het nieuwe seizoen. Het kwartet bestaat uit Roben Verheyen op saxen, Josef Dumoulin op piano en fender, Clemens van der Feen op bas en Flin van Hemmen op slagwerk. De muziek die Robin Verheyen beinvloedde in zijn spel is die van John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Mark Turner, Steve Coleman, Keith Jarrett en dat soort namen. Hij won afgelopen zomer nog de Django D' Or 2008, een prestigieuse Belgische onderscheiding, die alleen uitgereikt wordt aan de meest talentvolle jonge musici. Clemens van der Feen geeft een Zeeuws tintje aan dit kwartet, want hij komt oorspronkelijk uit Middelburg en speelde onder andere met zijn broer Paul in de Feen Brothers en het Van Der Feen Quartet. Net als Rik Mol, die morgen in Porgy en Bess de Stimuleringsprijs 2008 van het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds Zeeland in ontvangst mag nemen, speelde Clemens al als aankomend bassist op het podium van deze Zeeuwse jazztempel. Flin van Hemmen is zo'n jonge slagwerker, die voor mij alleen nog maar een naam is en dat geldt ook voor de Belgische pianist Josef Dumoulin. Reden genoeg om zondagmiddag naar Porgy en Bess te gaan, denk ik - met buiten regen en wind toch nog niet zo'n gekke manier om de zondag kapot te slaan.
