Richard Galliano Tangaria Quartet

A few months ago I got acquainted with the music of Richard Galliano at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. At a Sunday concert he played with his Tangaria Quartet. It was impressive. I told you about that concert in a previous Keep Swinging web log

Accordion seems pre-eminently an instrument for vaudeville artists and informal amusement music at wedding party in remote areas. But, nothing is further from the truth. The accordion was a very popular instrument in France, to play the musette and in Argenina in the hands of musicians like Astor Piazzolla. Also in jazz there are some great names to mention: Gus Viseur, Joe Mooney, Johnny Meyer, Emile Carrara and, my personal hero on the accordion Cornell Smelser. Richard Galliano, born in Cannes in 1950 is one of my favorites too, since last summer.

I bought myself one of his last CDs, titled Richard Galliano & Tangaria Quartet, featuring Hamilton de Holanda. Subtitled: Live in Marciac 2006. This album is a great contribution to the accordion. Most compositions are from Richard Galliano himself, others from the great maestro Astor Piazzolla. At the concert in Rotterdam it was a pity that Hamilton de Holanda couldn't be in time for this Richard Galliano Tangaria concert ( He was in time for his own concert !!)

One of the great tracks on this CD is the solo performance on the bandolim by Hamilton de Holanda: Disperada. He's is really one of the true giants on this instrument. I hope to hear him at the Anwerp concert listed below. I found some fragments with Richard Galliano, playing solo: Libertango; with his Tangaria Quartet and one fragment of Hamilton de Holanda (solo). Enjoy it.

Een paar maanden geleden hoorde ik voor het eerst de muziek van Richard Galliano op het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Op één van de concerten op zondagavond speelde hij met zijn Tangaria Quartet. Het was een heftige en indrukwekkende kennismaking. Ik heb er eerder in één van mijn Keep Swinging weblogs over geschreven.

De accordeon associeer je meestal met amusementsmuziek; tussen de schuifdeuren of als instrument op afgelegen dorpsbruiloften. Maar niets is minder waar. De accordeon is vanouds één van de populairste instrumenten in Frankrijk om de musette op te spelen of in Argentinië in handen van muzikanten als Astor Piazzolla. Als je terugkijkt in de jazzgeschiedenis kom je namen tegen als Gus Viseur, Joe Mooney, onze eigen Johnny Meyer, Emile Carrara en, mijn persoonlijke favoriet op de accordeon, Cornell Smelser. Richard Galliano, geboren in 1950 in Cannes, hoort sinds deze zomer ook tot mijn favorieten.

Ik kocht zijn laatste CD getiteld Richard Galliano & Tangaria Quartet, featuring Hamilton de Holanda. De ondertitel: Live in Marciac 2006. Deze plaat is een schitterend eerbetoon aan de accordeon en niemand zal meer durven beweren dat jazz en accordeon niet samen gaan. De meeste composities zijn van Richard Galliano zelf, andere van de grote meester, Astor Piazzolla. Tijdens het concert in Rotterdam was het jammer dat Hamilton de Holanda niet op tijd op het podium kon staan bij het Richard Galliano Tangaria concert ( Zijn vliegtuig landde wel op tijd voor zijn eigen concert later die avond)

Eén van de indrukwekkendste nummers op deze CD is die waar Hamilton de Holanda solo speelt op zijn bandolim: Disperada. Hij is echt geweldig op zijn instrument en ik hoop hem volgende week in Antwerpen weer te horen spelen. Ik vond een aantal filmfragmenten waarin je Richard Galliano solo het nummer Libertango kunt zien spelen; samen met zijn Tangaria Quartet en één fragment waarin Hamilton de Holanda soleert. Genieten dus !!

Volgende week speelt Hamilton de Holanda met zijn quintet hier in de buurt en heel de maand oktober is hij in Europa te horen.

On the 15th of July The Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet was one of the bands sceduled at the Darling hall at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. I wanted to join this concert because Hamilton de Holanda would be the special guest during this concert, but due to a delay of his flight from Rio de Janeiro he couldn't be in time in Rotterdam. It was great to learn that he was in time for his concert later that evening. However; the concert of the Richard Galliano Quintet was a great surprise.

Richard Galliano was born in France in 1950. His father was an accordion teacher and learned him to play the instrument. He played in all kinds of bands in Paris during the early 1970s before he played in a band together with Chet Baker who introduced him to jazz. In the decades that followed he played with jazz musicians like Louis Scalvis, Philip Catherine, Enrico Rava and Ron Carter. He discovered the bandoneon and the music of Astor Piazzolla and played it in a kind of free style improvisation. He made a lot of recordings ( Why don't I don't have one - what a shame !) and they seem all to be very impressive. So was his concert.

The Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet featured himself on the accordion and the Venezuelan violin player Alexis Cardemas. He is actually a classical violin player and a virtuoso on his instrument. Rafael Meijas, seen on the picture above, is also from Venezuela and plays the congas and bongos, but is an expert with the maracas. Never known that you can play a solo with this instrument. Great !! The rest of the rhythm section featured Philippe Viret on bass and Clarence Penn on drums. For me Richard Galliano was the discovery of the festival, as I had never heard him playing. He could fascinate the audience with his show of various music styles like French musettes, Venozuelan walzes, Piazzolla compositions and, as a woman at an advanced age beside me whispered in my ear: filmmuziek - dat doet me denken aan de jaren zestig in Parijs. ( film music - it reminds me to the 1960s in Paris).

I love to join with you some fragments of concerts made at the Marciac Jazz Festival 2006 by Richard Galliano. I'm sure you'll like it. I did !!

Op 15 juli 2007 trad het Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet op in de Darling zaal tijdens het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Ik wilde dit optreden persé meemaken omdat Hamilton de Holanda als speciale gast zou meespelen, maar omdat zijn vlucht vanuit Rio de Janeiro vertraagd was kon hij niet op tijd bij dit concert zijn. Gelukkig was hij wel op tijd voor zijn eigen geplande concert later op de avond. Al met al - het concert door het Richard Galliano Quintet had ik voor geen goud willen missen.

Richard Galliano werd geboren in Frankrijk in 1950. Zijn vader van accordeonleraar en leerde hem als kind spelen op dit instrument. Hij werkte in allerlei groepen tijdens de jaren zeventig en dankzij Chet Baker leerde hij de jazz kennen. In de jaren daarna begeleidde hij steeds vaker jazzmusici, zoals Louis Scalvis, Philip Catherine, Enrico Rava en Ron Carter. Hij ontdekte de bandoneon en de muziek van Astor Piazzolla waarop hij op een hele vrije manier leerde improviseren. Hij maakte de afgelopen jaren een heleboel opnamen ( Waarom heb ik er nog geen één? Schande) en ze schijnen stuk voor stuk goed te zijn, net als het optreden overigens.

Het Richard Galliano Tangaria Quintet bevatte, behalve Richard Galliano op accordeon, ook de Venezolaanse violist Alexis Cardemas; klassiek opgeleid, maar een virtuoos als het om Zuidamerikaanse muziek gaat. Rafael Meijas, de man op de foto hierboven, bleek een begenadigd percussiespeler en leerde ons dat je met maracas ( zeg maar een soort sambaballen) een fascinerende solo kunt spelen. De rest van de ritmesectie bestond uit Jean-Philippe Viret op bas en Clarence Penn op slagwerk. Voor mij was het optreden van deze Richard Galliano de ontdekking van het festival, aangezien ik nog maar weinig van hem gehoord had. Hij wist het publiek moeiteloos om zijn vinger te winden en speelde tijdens het concert even gemakkelijk Franse musettes, Venezolaanse walsjes, Piazzolla composities en, zoals een vrouw-op-leeftijd naast me in het oor fluisterde: filmmuziek - dat doet me denken aan de jaren zestig in Parijs.

Ik vind het fijn om wat fragmenten uit optredens gemaakt tijdens het Marcias Jazz Festival van 2006 te laten horen. Ik weet zeker dat ze zullen bevallen.

Kan iemand me adviseren welke plaat van Richard Galliano ik zeker niet mag missen !

North Sea Jazz

Yesterday I visited the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). This annual festival of jazz music was organized for the 32nd times from 13 up to 15 July 2007 at the Ahoy building. I visited the festival on the third and last day and want to share with you some impressions.

Face to face: Lee Konitz and Martial Solal

he first concert on my want list was a disappointment. In the series Key Figures of Europe two legends were invited on stage: Martial Solal, the 80 years old French piano player, who had played with musicians like Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Lucky Thomson during the 1950s, accompanied by the Moutin twins ( Francois on bass and Louis on drums) performed with Lee Konitz, 80 years old too. The sounds, both veterans produced, failed to hold the attention and after the second number half of the audience left the concert with Konitz yelling in despair: Don't they like Jazz?

Randy Brecker Electric Band

In my opinion the organisation was better then last years and it wasn't so crowdy, which made it possible to change concerts. So I could take a quick glance on the concerts of Stan Tracey ( another veteran, but in good form) with Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland and the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( without Bob Brookmeyer). I enjoyed the concert of the Dutch veteran piano player Misha Mengelberg, who had a great concert with his trio. In the Maas hall I joined the Randy Brecker Electric Band concert, but this kind of loud funky music is wasted on me.

There were two great concerts I have to mention. First of all Richard Galliano with his Tangaria Quintet happened to be skilled and entertaining musicians. This French accordion player won over the audience easily and got several standing ovations. What a great musician ! The Brazilian bandolim player Hamilton De Holanda, who was scedulded to participate with Richard Galliano, couldn't be in time in Rotterdam to join this concert, but he was in time for his own concert at the Murray. This concert with his Brasillianos Quintet was great and it was a great end of my festival. I will tell more about it in a later blog.

Gisteren bezocht ik het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Dit jaarlijkse festival werd voor de 32ste keer georganiseerd in Ahoy van 13 tot en met 15 juli 2007. Ik ben alleen op de derde dag, de zondag, geweest. Hier een korte impressie.

Oog in oog: Lee Konitz en Martial Solal.

Het eerste concert liep uit op een teleurstelling. In de serie Key Figures of Europe (sleutelfiguren uit de Europese jazz) waren twee legenden uitgenodigd: Martial Solal, de 80 jaar oude Franse pianist, die in de jaren vijftig speelde met Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet en Lucky Thomson, had de Moutin tweeling meegebracht, Francis op de bas en Louis op het slagwerk. Ze traden op samen met Lee Konitz, ook tachtig. Hoewel ze vroeger vaak samen speelden, kwamen beide heren deze keer niet verder dan wat onsamenhangende klanken, die geen vonk deden overspringen. Het publiek liep dan ook na het tweede nummer massaal weg, een vertwijfelde Lee Konitz achter latend: Don't they like Jazz? ( Houden die niet van jazz? )

Randy Brecker Electric Band

Dankzij het feit dat de zalen anders waren ingericht en het niet zo druk was, bleek het mogelijk om tussendoor bij andere concerten binnen te lopen. Hierdoor kon ik even ruiken aan het optreden van Stan Tracey ( weer zo'n veteraan) met Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland en het Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( zonder Bob Brookmeyer helaas). Ik heb genoten van het concert van Misha Mengelberg, die ook al boven de zeventig is en dus een veteraan genoemd mag worden. Ik had hem nog nooit horen spelen, maar dit concert smaakte naar meer. In de Maashal ben ik nog bij de Randy Brecker Electric Band binnengelopen, maar deze massale harde funk muziek is aan mijn niet besteed.

Hamilton De Holanda Brasilianos Quintet

Er waren twee buitengewoon goede concerten, die voor mij het festival afsloten. Het eerste was met het Richard Galliano and his Tangaria Quintet. Deze Franse accordonist bleek een ervaren entertainer en wist de hele zaal met gemak in te palmen. Hij kreeg dan ook met gemak verschillende staande ovaties. Wat een muzikant - wat een groep !! De Braziliaanse bandolimspeler Hamilton De Holanda, die als speciale gast bij dit optreden zou zijn, kon er, door een vertraagd vliegtuig, niet bij zijn. Gelukkig was hij wel op tijd voor zijn eigen concert met zijn Brasilianos Quintet, dat als afsluiter geprojecteerd stond in de Murray tent. Het werd een schitterend concert, waarover later ongetwijfeld meer.
