LOUIS en FRANCOIS MOUTIN: Een Jazztweeling

Een paar maanden geleden stuitte ik op een laaggeprijsde dubbel-CD van de Franse broers Louis & Francois Moutin met stripverhaal in een opvallende verpakking uitgebracht op het label BD Jazz.
Deze serie 2CD valt op door hun afwijkend formaat, dat eerder aan een ingebonden boekje doet denken, dan aan een dubbel CD. De serie bevat voornamelijk portretten van Amerikaanse jazzzlegenden zoals Count Basie, Glenn Miller of Erroll Garner om er maar eens een paar te noemen - niet interessant voor de gemiddelde lezer van dit blog, maar die ene met Louis en Francois Moutin paste eigenlijk niet in deze serie van 34 sets; vandaar dat ik hem meegenomen heb.

Het boekje bevat een stripverhaal, een bande dessinée in het Frans, met het verhaal van hun carriere in de muziek. Je vindt er het verhaal hoe kleine Louis, samen met ouders en zijn broer Francois, bij een concert van Memphis Slim in Les Trois Maillets in Le Quartier Saint Michel in Paris, het ritme meetikt op de tafel, wat Memphis Slim tot de legendarische profetische woorden doet verleiden: Hey young fellow! You're a drummer ( = Hé, jonge man - jij bent een drummer!). En hoe ze tijdens een concert op de technische hogeschool, l'Écoles d' Ingénieurs ( zowel Francois als Louis studeerden werktuigbouwkunde), een concert bijwoonden van de Franse pianist Jean-Michel Pilc; verder komt in het verhaal hun optredens met Martial Solal aan bod en andere jazzmusici en uiteraard ook de oprichting van het Moutin Reunion Quartet.

Louis & Francois Moutin - broers - tweelingen zelfs - nog steeds actief met hun Moutin Reunion Quartet en talloze concerten met andere jazzmusici zijn in deze BD Jazz serie; wat mij betreft, twee vreemde eenden in de bijt. Louis Moutin is slagwerker. Geboren in Parijs op 24 december 1961, op dezelfde dag als zijn broer, genoot als kind van de platenverzameling van zijn ouders, ging piano spelen, maar verwisselde die als jong volwassene voor het drumstel. Hij begon zijn carriere bij het Machado Trio, voordat hij met zijn tweelingbroer ging optreden en samen met hem Het Mouton Reunion Quartet oprichtte. Francois begon zijn carriere als bassist in het trio van Martial Solal, voordat hij met musici als Richie Beirac, James Hurt, Frank Wess en Jeff Tain Watts optrad, om er maar een paar te noemen. Tien jaar geleden landde ook hij in het Moutin Reunion Quartet. Tien jaar later bestaat dit Moutin Reunion Quartet nog steeds, heeft vier albums gemaakt en in honderden concerten opgetreden. Twee van hun platen vind je in deze uitgave: Power Tree ( uitgebracht in 2002 - opgenomen twee jaar daarvoor) en Red Moon ( opgenomen en uitgebracht in 2003) zijn beide met dit Moutin Reunion Quartet, waarin Francois Moutin op bas - Louis Moutin op slagwerk - Babtiste Trotignon aan de piano en Sylvain Beuf op tenor- en sopraansax ( op de Power Tree CD) en Rick Margitza sax op het Red Moon album.

De muziek op beide CD's is buitengewoon - het is een genoegen om naar deze ervaren muzikanten te luisteren. De meeste nummers zijn van hun beider hand, zoals Toutes Directions en Africa of door één van de broers afzonderlijk: Jazz Married, Elle Aime en A Bâtons Rompus van Louis Moutin en Flying Bridge, Apollo 13th en Soraya van de hand van Francois. Het afgelopen jaar speelden ze zo'n 50 concerten, voornamelijk in Frankrijk en de Verenigde Staten. Gisteravond stond Francois Moutin gepland bij een optreden van het Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet in het 't Schuttershofcafé in Middelburg, maar er was gisteren nog wat onzekerheid of hij er bij zou kunnen zijn. Ik kwam er pas later achter dat ik Francois Moutin heb horen spelen tijdens het schitterende Jean-Michel Pilc concert in de Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in februari 2002, samen met Ari Hoenig op slagwerk en Francois Moutin op bas. Ik herinner me alleen nog van dit optreden de buitengewone techniek, de verrassende harmonieën en ritmen van Jean-Michel Pilc en ik luister dan ook nog graag naar hun prachtige album: Welcome Home.

Vorig jaar zag ik de beide broers terug tijdens het North Sea Jazzfestival in Rotterdam op 15 juli 2007 in de Darling Zaal, waar ze Martial Solal en Lee Konitz begeleidden. Ik schreef over dit wat tegenvallende concert in een eerdere bijdrage.

Een mooi budgetalbum met schitterende jazz, dat je maar eens te pakken moet zien te krijgen.

CLANCEY HAYES ( 1908 - 1972)

Today we commemorate the fact that on the 14th of November 1908, Clancy Hayes, nicknamed the Swinging Minstrel, was born in Caney Kansas. (USA)
He would have become 100 years today, if he had been still around. He was a banjo player, but also a gifted vocalist in the Frisco Jazz style.

He started as a vaudeville artist during the 1920s, but he was best remembered as the banjo player and vocalist of the Lu Watter's Yerba Buena Jazz Band and, after Bob Scobey left the group and founded his famous Frisco Band. Clancy Hayes became a member until 1959, when he started a solo career. He is to be heard on numerous LPs by the Scobey band from that period.

He passed away March 1972.

LOUIS & FRANCOIS MOUTIN: TWO GREAT MUSICIANS

A few month ago I found a budget 2CD set in an remarkable cover by the French brothers Louis & Francois Moutin.

This 2CD doesn't acutally look like a 2CD set, but seems to be a bound booklet. The series of BD Jazz contains legendary American jazz musicians like Count Basie, Glenn Miller or Erroll Garner - all more of the same - not interesting for the most of us, but there was one album that fascinated me: Louis & Francois Moutin. Those names didn't fit into the list of 34 editions, so I bought myself a copy of these artists.

The booklet also contains a comic strip, a bande dessinée in French, with the story of their career; stories like how little Louis, joining a concert with his brother and parents in Les Trois Maillets in Le Quartier Saint Michel in Paris, was tapping the rhythm on the table at a concert of Memphis Slim, who predicts his career: Hey Young Fellow ! You're A Drummer. And about a concert at the Écoles d' Ingénieurs ( both Francois as Louis studied engineering), where they joined a concert by Jean-Michel Pilc; the skilled US-French piano player, and about the period that Francois and Louis were accompaning Martial Solal up to the foundation of The Moutin Reunion Quartet. I think, Francois Moutin made the drawings.
Louis & Francois Moutin - brothers, even twins, two French jazz musicians - still active; the oddman out in this series with legendary jazz names. Louis Moutin is the drummer. Born in Paris on the 24th of December 1961, started his career in the Machado Trio, before he founded a quartet with his twin brother and bass player Francois. Francois started his career as a bass player in the Martial Solal Trio, and played with numerous French and US artists like Richie Beirac, James Hurt, Frank Wess and Jeff Tain Watts to list some names, before he co-founded the Quintet Moutin with his brother.

Ten years ago the Moutin Reunion Quartet was born; ten years later they have made four albums and performed at more then 300 concerts. In the booklet - cover you can find two of these records: Power Tree ( released in 2002 - recorded two years earlier) and Red Moon ( released and recorded 2003), both with their Moutin Reunion Quartet. This quartet features Francois Moutin on bass - Louis Moutin on drums - Babtiste Trotignon at the piano and Sylvain Beuf on tenor- and soprano saxophone ( on the Power Tree CD) and Rick Margitza, saxophone ( on the Red Moon album).

It is really amazing to listen to this quartet which brings some great jazz. Most of the tunes are composed by the Moutin brothers, like Toutes Directions and Africa or by the two brothers as individuals: Jazz Married, Elle Aime and A Bâtons Rompus by Louis Moutin and Flying Bridge, Apollo 13th and Soraya by Francois.

It is amazing to learn that they performed last years on ca. 50 concert, all in the US and in France. Tonight Francois Moutin will perform at the Café 't Schutttershof in Middelburg in the southwest part of The Netherlands as part of the Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet. I heard Francois Moutin for the very first time as a member of the great Jean-Michel Pilc Trio, which performed at a concert in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands ( February 2002 ), featuring Ari Hoenig on drums and Francois Moutin on bass. To be honest - I only remember the great Jean-Michel Pilc on the keys who released a great album Welcome Home. Last year I joined a concert at the 2007 North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam where both Louis as Francois accompanied Martial Solal and Lee Konitz in a performance at the Darling zaal ( 15th of July 2007).

Nederlands ( To the English section with a contribution about two French jazz musicians: deux musicien d' exception.)

JUNIOR JAZZ

Al surfend over het internet vond ik een tweetal schitterende filmfragmenten van een optreden van een jonge Belgische zangeres, toen twaalf jaar oud, genaamd Eline Van Coillie.

Deze zangeres, op een leeftijd, dat je niet zou verwachten al op zo'n hoog niveau jazz te zingen, trad op tijdens een Belgisch jeugdprogramma. Ik vond een tweetal fragmenten die uitgezonden zijn in het NCRV programma Man Bijt Hond en die ik julie zeker niet wil onthouden.

Ondertusen heeft deze jonge dame als twee CD's op haar naam staan en een drietal singels: Junior Jazz dateert van 2003 en Here It Comes van 2006. De singeltjes heten respectievelijk The Look of Love, Thirteen and Sweet en Daydreamer. Is het niet fantastisch en hoopgevend om deze jonge mensen op zo'n hoog niveau bezig zijn met muziek in het algemeen en jazz in het bijzonder? Ik wens Eline een grote carriere in de (jazz)muziek toe.

North Sea Jazz

Yesterday I visited the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). This annual festival of jazz music was organized for the 32nd times from 13 up to 15 July 2007 at the Ahoy building. I visited the festival on the third and last day and want to share with you some impressions.

Face to face: Lee Konitz and Martial Solal

he first concert on my want list was a disappointment. In the series Key Figures of Europe two legends were invited on stage: Martial Solal, the 80 years old French piano player, who had played with musicians like Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Lucky Thomson during the 1950s, accompanied by the Moutin twins ( Francois on bass and Louis on drums) performed with Lee Konitz, 80 years old too. The sounds, both veterans produced, failed to hold the attention and after the second number half of the audience left the concert with Konitz yelling in despair: Don't they like Jazz?

In my opinion the organisation was better then last years and it wasn't so crowdy, which made it possible to change concerts. So I could take a quick glance on the concerts of Stan Tracey ( another veteran, but in good form) with Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland and the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( without Bob Brookmeyer). I enjoyed the concert of the Dutch veteran piano player Misha Mengelberg, who had a great concert with his trio. In the Maas hall I joined the Randy Brecker Electric Band concert, but this kind of loud funky music is wasted on me.

There were two great concerts I have to mention. First of all Richard Galliano with his Tangaria Quintet happened to be skilled and entertaining musicians. This French accordion player won over the audience easily and got several standing ovations. What a great musician ! The Brazilian bandolim player Hamilton De Holanda, who was scedulded to participate with Richard Galliano, couldn't be in time in Rotterdam to join this concert, but he was in time for his own concert at the Murray. This concert with his Brasillianos Quintet was great and it was a great end of my festival. I will tell more about it in a later blog.

Gisteren bezocht ik het North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Dit jaarlijkse festival werd voor de 32ste keer georganiseerd in Ahoy van 13 tot en met 15 juli 2007. Ik ben alleen op de derde dag, de zondag, geweest. Hier een korte impressie.

Oog in oog: Lee Konitz en Martial Solal.

Het eerste concert liep uit op een teleurstelling. In de serie Key Figures of Europe (sleutelfiguren uit de Europese jazz) waren twee legenden uitgenodigd: Martial Solal, de 80 jaar oude Franse pianist, die in de jaren vijftig speelde met Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet en Lucky Thomson, had de Moutin tweeling meegebracht, Francis op de bas en Louis op het slagwerk. Ze traden op samen met Lee Konitz, ook tachtig. Hoewel ze vroeger vaak samen speelden, kwamen beide heren deze keer niet verder dan wat onsamenhangende klanken, die geen vonk deden overspringen. Het publiek liep dan ook na het tweede nummer massaal weg, een vertwijfelde Lee Konitz achter latend: Don't they like Jazz? ( Houden die niet van jazz? )

Dankzij het feit dat de zalen anders waren ingericht en het niet zo druk was, bleek het mogelijk om tussendoor bij andere concerten binnen te lopen. Hierdoor kon ik even ruiken aan het optreden van Stan Tracey ( weer zo'n veteraan) met Benjamin Herman, Dave Holland en het Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra ( zonder Bob Brookmeyer helaas). Ik heb genoten van het concert van Misha Mengelberg, die ook al boven de zeventig is en dus een veteraan genoemd mag worden. Ik had hem nog nooit horen spelen, maar dit concert smaakte naar meer. In de Maashal ben ik nog bij de Randy Brecker Electric Band binnengelopen, maar deze massale harde funk muziek is aan mijn niet besteed.

Hamilton De Holanda Brasilianos Quintet

Er waren twee buitengewoon goede concerten, die voor mij het festival afsloten. Het eerste was met het Richard Galliano and his Tangaria Quintet. Deze Franse accordonist bleek een ervaren entertainer en wist de hele zaal met gemak in te palmen. Hij kreeg dan ook met gemak verschillende staande ovaties. Wat een muzikant - wat een groep !! De Braziliaanse bandolimspeler Hamilton De Holanda, die als speciale gast bij dit optreden zou zijn, kon er, door een vertraagd vliegtuig, niet bij zijn. Gelukkig was hij wel op tijd voor zijn eigen concert met zijn Brasilianos Quintet, dat als afsluiter geprojecteerd stond in de Murray tent. Het werd een schitterend concert, waarover later ongetwijfeld meer.
