Last weekend, the North Sea Jazz 2010 festival, scheduled from Friday the 9th up to Sunday the 11th of July, 2010 was characterized by the tropical temperatures inside and outside the halls and, of course, the FIFA World Cup 2010 Final between the soccer teams from The Netherlands and Spain and as you might know: Holland reached the second position and Spain was one but last.Bob Brookmeyer (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

I visited the festival on Saturday, the 10th of July, 2010. Like most festival in the past, the Hudson hall is for me the place to be - the first concert was by the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra.

Bob Brookmeyer, now in his 80s, suggested to start a new project: to install air conditioning. Although known for playing the valve trombone in the 1950s with great names like Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, as one of the founders of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band and conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band, he only played his instrument for a small intro in the first tune - as the leader of his New Art Orchestra he conducted the band sitting on a high chair with his back to the audience marking the accents of the music with some finger snaps......

All tunes played that evening were compositions by Bob Brookmeyer, or as he said: I'm involved with most of them. Most compositions had great harmonic structures - personally I love to hear a more swinging big band .... Well, never mind - Ruud Breuls, our Dutch trumpet player and member of the New Art Orchestra learned that he is a great soloist. Bob had dedicated one of his compositions to his grandson, whose birthday was celebrated in Rotterdam. He surprised his grandfather during the concert with a bouquet of flowers........

The second band at the Hudson was the Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, now 80 years old, was the Artist in Residence of the festival- On Friday he performed with an original member of his trio Charlie Haden and the son-of the late Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman.

At the Saturday concert he played with his regular quartet featuring Al Mac Dowell on electric bass, Tony Falanga on double bass and his son Donardo Coleman on drums. Ornette is a legendary alto saxophone player who upset and divided the jazz scene during the 1960s with his new free style music experiences.

Now, fifty years later, he sounds more sophisticated ( or did my ears changed?) playing his white alto saxophone and trumpet ( and violin on one tune), but he still loves to surprise the audience.Mari Okubo (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

What to think about the Japanese vocalist Mari Okubo, who has, Ornette Coleman says on her website, one of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being. Mari seemed to look out for the permitted limits of the audience, imitating a fufu zela or what so ever .....

The third band that was scheduled at the Hudson, seemed to be a small All-Star band itself: Bobby Hutcherson on vibes; Cedar Walton at the keys; David Williams on double bass and Eddie Marshall on drums.

Bobby Hutcherson, one of the last of the vibes players is known for his part in the classic Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch and his Blue Note albums, like Dialogue and Night in Barcelona ( with Hariold Land). Nine years ago I heard him before with the McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, at the Congresgebouw in The Hague.

Cedar Walton, which I heard before with Roy Hargrove ( Porgy en Bess - February 1998) and the Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio at the Congresgebouw in The Hague ( July 2002), performed in the past with names like J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan and still is a sought after accompanist.

David Williams performed in the past with great names like Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, and, of course, with Cedar Walton.

Drummer Eddie Marshall played with Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dexter Gordon and recorded with Bobby Hutcherson, like on the 1977 Blue Note album "Now".

Bobby Hutcherson learned that he is still a gifted instrumentalist, fighting against his asthma ( It seemed that a fan near his feet didn't bring much lightening), joked with the audience and had them laughing, while the rhythm section learned what great musicians they are. It was, for me, one of the high lights of the evening.

Visiting the North Sea Jazz Festival means that you have to make choices. So I missed some great concerts I loved to have joined, like the Kenny Barron Trio with David Sanchez which played for a packed Madeira hall and the David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio. I've heard parts of these concerts and I'd love to hear more - a good reason to return next year.

I was just in time to join the presentation of the award ceremony of the Dutch Jazz Competition. The winner of this prestigious award for young jazz players was The Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, born and raised in our region Zeeland ( like Rik Mol, Jan Menu and the Feen Brothers) also received the Norma prize for Best Soloist 2010. I hope to hear these four promising musicians ( Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxes), - Sven Happel (bass) and Mark Schilders ( drums) once in concert.

Each year ten thousands of jazz fans world wide look forward to visit the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. It's the biggest jazz indoor festival in the world. On Saturday the 10th of July, 2010 the Hudson hall in the Ahoy building in Rotterdam was for me the plays to be. I joined three concerts with only great names as a living encyclopediae of jazz history: Bob Brookmeyer, Ornette Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson and Cedar Walton. I love to look back to that evening ..... Afgelopen weekend stond in het teken van het 35ste Northsea Jazzfestival ( 9 t/m 11 juli 2010) en de finale voor de wereldbeker voetbal in Zuid-Afrika. Ik bezocht het festival op zaterdag 10 juli 2010. Voor mij was de Hudsonzaal deze keer the place to be, omdat de programmering grote namen beloofde - een reis door de geschiedenis van de jazz. Het eerste concert was dat van het New Art Orchestra o.l.v. Bob Brookmeyer.

Bob Brookmeyer, nu een breekbare oude man van in de tachtig ( maar eenmaal op zijn kruk een inspirerend bandleider), suggereerde om als eerstvolgende project te kiezen voor ........ airconditioning gezien de tropische temperaturen in de zaal een prima suggestie. Hoewel beroemd geworden door zijn spel op de ventieltrombone in de jaren vijftig met musici als Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band ( hij was één van de oprichters) en dirigent van de Danish Radio Big Band, bleef het instrument, behoudens een korte intro op het eerste nummer, in zijn houder staan.

De stukken, alle composities van Bob, konden me niet allemaal boeien, maar solisten zoals onze eigen Ruud Breuls op trompet lieten horen begenadigde solisten te zijn. Zittend op zijn hoge kruk, met zijn rug naar het publiek, schijnbaar moeiteloos het orkest leidend ( met een vingertje werden haast achteloos de accenten aangegeven) werd vooral appèl gedaan op de schitterende harmonische verbanden en slechts af en toe werd het publiek getrakteerd op swingende big band, iets wat ik graag hoor. Eén van de composities werd speciaal uitgevoerd vanwege de verjaardag van zijn kleinzoon, die opa, na afloop, verraste met een bos bloemen.

Het tweede optreden in de Hudson was het Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, nu 80 jaar oud, is Artist in Residence, was inhoudt dat hij tijdens het festival in een aantal concerten te horen is. Zo speelde hij op vrijdag met Charlie Haden, bassist uit zijn beroemde trio en met Joshua Redman, zoon van de onlangs overleden Dewey Redman, die ook deel uit maakte van Coleman's groepen.

Tijdens het concert van zaterdag speelde hij met zijn reguliere kwartet met Al Mac Dowell op elektrische bas, Tony Falanga op akoestische bas en zijn zoon Denardo Coleman op drums. Ornette is bij leven al een legende vanwege zijn experimentele opnamen uit 1960 waarbij hij de toenmalige jazzscene in beroering bracht en een stijl creëerde, die de freejazz zou gaan heten.

Nu, vijftig jaar later, klinkt zijn muziek iets meer gepolijst ( of zijn onze oren veranderd!), maar weet hij met zijn witte altsax en trompet ( en incidenteel de viool) toch nog steeds met zijn optreden het publiek te verrassen. Wat te denken van de Japanse zangeres Mari Okubo, volgens Ornette Coleman One of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being (= Eén van de mooiste menselijke stemmen). die hij als speciale gast had uitgenodigd en die met haar stem als een fufu zela de grenzen van het toelaatbare opzocht.

De derde band op het Hudson-podium was bijna een All-star band te noemen: Bobby Hutcherson zittend achter zijn vibrafoon; Cedar Walton aan de piano, David Williams op bas en Eddie Marshall op slagwerk.

Bobby Hutcherson, één van de laatste van de grote vibrafonisten, hij speelde ooit mee op het klassieke Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch, is vooral bekend geworden om zijn Blue Note platen, zoals Night in Barcelona ( met Hariold Land) en Dialogue. Negen jaar gelden hoorde ik hem al eens bij het McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, toen nog in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag.

Cedar Walton, die overigens, las ik, met zijn kwartet al op het eerste festival in 1977 present was, is voor mij ook geen onbekend meer. Ik hoorde hem eerder in Porgy en Bess bij Roy Hargrove ( februari 1998) en het Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag ( juli 2002). Hij speelde in het verleden met bijna alle grootten in de jazz ( J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan en Roy Hargrove om even een onvolledig lijstje te maken en dat vooral omdat hij zo'n geweldige begeleider is.

David Williams, ook zo'n gezochte muzikant vanwege zijn solide basspel begeleidde namen als Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, en natuurlijk, Cedar Walton.

Drummer Eddie Marshall speelde met Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dexter Gordon en is o.a. te horen op de Blue Note plaat "Now" van Bobby Hutcherson.

Bobby Hutcherson, pontificaal gezeten achter zijn reusachtig instrument, liet horen dat hij nog steeds een begenadigd instrumentalist is - grappen makend met het publiek maar vechtend tegen zijn astma ( een ventilator naast hem op de grond bracht weinig verlichting), wist hij het publiek in te pakken en af te leiden van de vaak schitterende solo's van de ritmesectie. Dit concert was voor mij één van de hoogtepunten van de avond.

Als je kiest voor het Northsea betekent dit onvermijdelijk keuzes maken en aan sommige concerten kun je dan alleen maar ruiken en wellicht concluderen dat je een kans hebt laten liggen. Eén zo'n concert, waar ik even achterin van kon genieten was dat van het Kenny Barron Trio met David Sanchez, die in een volgepakte Madeira speelde en het David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio, waarbij ik alleen nog een plaatsje helemaal achterin op de tribune kon scoren - niet de meest comfortabele plek om van zo'n optreden te genieten. Volgend jaar beter denk ik dan maar .........

Bij toeval was ik precies op tijd in de Volga om daar de bekendmaking en uitreiking bij te wonen van de Dutch Jazz Competition. De winnaar van deze belangrijke aanmoedigingsprijs voor jong Nederlands talent werd het Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, geboren en getogen in Zeeland ( net als overigens Rik Mol, Jan Menu en de Feen Brothers) ontving eerder de solistenprijs 2010. Ik hoop deze groep, met Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxen), Sven Happel (bas) en Mark Schilders ( slagwerk) een keer live te kunnen zien spelen.

Het Northsea Jazzfestival behoort voor tienduizenden jazzfans uit Nederland en verre omstreken tot een vast ankerpunt in het jaar. Zaterdag 10 juli 2010 waren in de Hudson zaal in het Ahoy complex in Rotterdam een aantal indrukwekkende concerten gepland waarvan ik er drie bezocht. Een terugblik op een tropisch heet Ahoy met Ornette Coleman, Bob Brookmeyer, Cedar Walton en Bobby Hutcherson - een rij namen die thuis hoort in een eregallerij van de jazz.

Als je het leuk vindt om te lezen over dit soort legenden uit de jazzgeschiedenis, maar ook over nu geheel vergeten helden uit een ver verleden, vraag dan de nieuwsbrief.

Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue

Bobby Hutcherson's CD Dialogue is one of those great Blue Note records that were reissued in the Rudy Van Gelder Edition. This record was originally recorded in 1965 by the Bobby Hutcherson Sextet, featuring Freddie Hubbard on the trumpet, Sam Rivers on reeds and flute, Bobby Hutcherson plays vibes and marimba, Andrew Hill plays the piano and was responsable for most compositions on this album ( I like his composition Les Noirs Marchant best ) and , last but not least, Joe Chambers at the drums. He composed two tracks, Idle While and Dialogue. Although Bobby Hutcherson is credited as the leader of this group I think it could have been as well an Andrew Hill recording.
This album, Dialogue, was Bobby Hutcherson's first recording for Blue Note under his own direction. His first recording for Blue Note was in 1963 in a Jackie McLean recording One Step Beyond. It was clear for Alfred Lion, the big boss, that Bobby Hutcherson, like Tony Williams and Grachan Moncur should become the new artists to represent Blue Note. Bobby Hutcherson recorded for Blue Note up to the seventies when the original Blue Note stopped its activities. His group features some of the best men Blue Note had around, like Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers and three of them were also present at the famous Out To Lunch recording made by Eric Dolphy: Hutcherson - Hubbard and Davis.
The vibes were not very popular in those days, although Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton were very popular. Thanks to Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson started to study vibes while still at school. So I'm glad I found a film fragment where both Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson together play in a duet. I heard Bobby Hutcherson playing live in a concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, July 2002 in the McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet. I liked that very much and that's why I love to share with you two fragments of this band with the tune African Village ( in two parts). Hope you like it !!

Jazz vibes giant Milt Jackson (1923 - 1999) in one of his last performances. With him, Michael LeDonne on piano, Pierre Boussaguet on bass, and the legendary Mickey Roker on drums. At this point, Milt Jackson brings Bobby Hutcherson on stage for a duet on the venerable standard "Lady Be Good", a fitting finale for this great concert.(Salzau, Germany, 1999.)

Bobby Hutcherson's CD Dialogue is één van die fantastische heruitgaven op Blue Note in de Rudy van Gelder Edition. De plaat werd origineel uitgebracht in 1965 door het Bobby Hutcherson Sextet, met daarin Freddie Hubbard op trompet, Sam Rivers op allerlei saxen en fluit, Bobby Hutcherson speelt vibrafoon en marimaba, Andrew Hill is op de piano te vinden en was verantwoordelijk voor de meeste composities op de plaat. Het beste nummer, m.i. is van zijn hand: Les Noirs Marchant. Joe Chambers speelt het slagwerk. Hij componeerde twee stukken: Idle While en het titelstuk Dialogue. Hoewel de plaat Bobby Hutcherson's naam draagt zou het net zo goed een Andrew Hill plaat geweest kunnen zijn.
De plaat, Dialogue, is één van Bobby Hutcherson's eerste opnamen voor Blue Note onder eigen naam. Zijn eerste opnamen voor Blue Note dateren van 1963, toen hij speelde bij Jackie McLean voor zijn opnamen One Step Beyond. Het was duidelijk voor Alfred Lion, de grote man bij Blue Note, dat Bobby Hutcherson, net als Tony Williams en Grachan Moncur de nieuwe generatie jazzmusici zou worden bij Blue Note. De samenstelling van zijn band op Dialogue was op dat moment zo ongeveer het beste dat Blue Note kon leveren: Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill en Joe Chambers en bovendien waren drie van de musici ook aanwezig geweest bij de opnamen van de mijlpaal in moderne jazz Out To Lunch van Eric Dolphy: Hutcherson - Hubbard en Davis.
De vibrafoon is niet het meest populaire instrument in jazz; nu niet, maar ook toen niet. Natuurlijk hadden Milt Jackson en Lionel Hampton hun sporen al verdiend. Dankzij Milt Jackson was Bobby Hutcherson op vibrafoon begonnen toen hij nog op de middelbare school zat. Ik vind het dan ook leuk jullie een filmpje te laten zien waarbij Milt Jackson en Bobby Hutcherson samen op twee instrumenten optreden. Ik hoorde Bobby Hutcherson spelen op het North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag in juli 2002 in het McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet. Ik heb daar van genoten en daarom zitten er ook twee opnamen bij van deze groep. Ze spelen het nummer African Village ( in two parts). Genieten dus !!

The Other Side Of Round Midnight

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.) One of the jazz films I like most is Round Midnight. This film was released in 1986 and tells the story of Dale Turner, in fact the lifes of Bud Powell and Lester Young mixed together, played by Dexter Gordon in the leading part, but also with musicians like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson and Billy Higgins. I wrote about this film before in a previous Keep swinging contribution.

As the music, played in the film was made by real jazz musicians, they had to record a lot of music for the film and of course, most of it wasn't used. I found the LP The Other Side Of Round Midnight which contains some of these unreleased tunes. This LP contains nine tracks played by the musicians mentioned above and has some great music.

Dexter Gordon, whose solid sound fascinates me very much, is on four tracks. As it was music, used for the film, one number, titled Tivoli isn't complete recorded, but stops in the middle of Cedar Walton's piano solo. The title Call Sheet Music refers to the screenplay that tells what time yoú have to play a certain scene for the film - and of course about the long boring hours; the inactive periods. During one of these idle chunks of time Wayne Shorter started to play a blues, with the rhythm section joining in and Herbie Hancock, who heard what happened at the piano. This spontanious jam was recorded and is to be found on this compilation titled Call Sheet Music. A great piece of music !!

Eén van de mooiste jazzfilms is volgens mij Round Midnight. Deze film werd uitgebracht in 1986 en vertelt het verhaal van Dale Turner, maar in feite gaat het verhaal over de levens van Bud Powell en Lester Young, gespeeld door Dexter Gordon in de hoofdrol, maar ook met een groot aantal musici als Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson en Billy Higgins. Ik schreef ( in het Engels) al eens iets over deze film in een eerdere Keep swinging bijdrage.

Omdat de muziek in de film gespeeld wordt door echte jazzmusici, moesten er nogal wat opnamen gemaakt worden. Een heleboel van die opnamen werden, vanzelfsprekend, niet gebruikt en bleven op de plank liggen. Ik vond de LP The Other Side Of Round Midnight, die een aantal van deze onuitgebrachte takes laat horen. De LP bevat een negental nummers, gespeeld door de musici, die ik boven al op rij zette, in verschillende bezettingen.

Dexter Gordon, wiens stevige solide geluid op de tenorsax me ontzettend boeit, is op vier nummers te horen. Aangezien het hier om muziek gaat, die gebruikt zou worden in de film, kan het gebeuren dat een nummer halverwege wordt afgebroken, zoals bij Tivoli, dat stopt als Cedar Walton aan een solo bezig is; meer was voor de film niet nodig. De titel Call Sheet Music refereert naar het draaiboek, waarin precies vermeld staat wanneer iemand moet opdraven om een bepaalde scene op te nemen. Dat betekent vaak vele saaie uren wachten en tijdens één van deze lege momenten pakte Wayne Shorter zijn instrument en begon een blues te spelen, die meteen opgepakt werd door de ritmesectie en ook Herbie Hancock voelde precies aan wat hem te doen stond. Gelukkig werd deze spontane jamsessie opgenomen en is terug te vinden onder de titel Call Sheet Music; een mooi stukje muziek.

Ik heb twee fragmenten uit de film gevonden om te laten zien. Als je de film niet kent, haast je dan om ergens een kopie te bemachtigen - het is een prachtige film voor jazzliefhebbers geworden, met een schitterende rol weggelegd voor Dexter Gordon.
