Aces of Syncopation

The Aces of Syncopation. A trio - not a traditional one, with piano, bass and percussion as you might expect, but a banjo, a sousaphone and a clarinet. Three skilled musicians: Tom Stuip on the banjo, Robert Veen on the clarinet and Paul Habraken on the sousaphone. Tom Stuip plays the banjo since his youth, but he prefered to have a real electric guitar like his pop ideols. Unfortunally, he didn't had the money for such an instrument, so he took up the tenorbanjo of his grandfather. Now he is a skilled musican, who has played in dozens of orchestras, like the Dixie Machine, Crooks, Delirium Tremolo, the Down Town Jazz Band and the Dutch Swing College Band ( and I only mention the bands I have (had) music in my collection. ). Nowadays he is a sought after guest on banjo festivals, like the Kobe Festival, the festival of traditional jazz in Japan, where he played with Ken Aoki , the great Japanese banjo player. He plays in The Aces Of Syncopation, Red Wing, Jazz-O-Matic Four and the string band Astro's Fools and a Fiddle.
The clarinet player is Robert Veen, who plays all kinds of reed instruments. He is well known in the traditional jazz scene as a musician, composer, arranger and promotor of the Beau Hunks projects. I wrote about the great Jimmy Lunceford project in an earlier blog, but let's not forget the Laurel & Hardy film music transcriptions and the great recordings of the Paul Whiteman arrangements with the Saxophone Soctette. He played in the John Clayton Tribute Big Band, was fasinated by the music of Al Gallodoro, who came to Holland to play with the Beau Hunks and of course, as a clarinet player, he likes the musical heritage of Sidney Bechet.
Paul Habraken, 60 years now, started on the French Horn and when he got involved in the Amsterdam Traditional Jazz Scene he switched to sousaphone. He made recordings with The Roaring Seven Jazzband, The Animal Crackers , The Joseph Lam Jazz Band and the Fried Potatoes.
The Aces of Syncopation play Hot Classic Jazz and on their first CD, Lastic, most of the tunes are Sidney Bechet compositions, like Pattes De Mouche, Egyptian Fantasy, the title song Lastic and Moulin á Café, to name some. Others are 1920s traditonals like Vo-Do-Do-De-O Blues, beter known as Crazy Words Crazy Tunes and Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me. Since their debut record Lastic, released in 1996, they made three more albums, I haven't heard: Sydney, In The Shade Of The Old Apple Tree and Kitano Walk, dedicated to the Kobe Jazz Festival, where these three musicians are regular guests. I like their Aces of Syncopation album - Lastic - A great album !!

The Aces of Syncopation. Een trio - maar geen gewoon trio, met piano, bas en slagwerk, zoals je mag verwachten, maar met een banjo, een sousafoon en een klarinet. Drie ervaren muzikanten: Tom Stuip op de banjo, Robert Veen op de klarinet en Paul Habraken op de sousafoon.
Tom Stuip speelt al banjo sinds zijn jeugd, maar had veel liever, net als zijn popidolen, de electrische gitaar gespeeld; maar geld was er niet, dus werd het de banjo van zijn opa. Nu is hij een ervaren muzikant die in tientallen orkesten gespeeld heeft, zoals de Dixie Machine, Crooks, Delirium Tremolo, de Down Town Jazz Band en de Dutch Swing College Band ( en dan beperk ik me alleen tot die bands, waar ik muziek van (gehad) heb). Tegenwoordig is hij een graag geziene gast op banjofestivals, zoals het Kobe Jazz festival in Japan. In een eerdere bijdrage vertelde ik over hun optredens met Ken Aoki, de virtuoze Japanse banjoist. Tegenwoordig speelt Tom in groepen als The Aces Of Syncopation, Red Wing, Jazz-O-Matic Four en de stringband Astro's Fools and a Fiddle.

Hij is bekend in de traditionele jazzscene als muzikant, componist, arangeur en promotor van bijvoorbeeld de Beau Hunks projecten. Ik schreef eerder over het grootse Jimmy Lunceford project, maar als je aan de Beau Hunks denkt, denk je natuurlijk aan de CD's met Laurel & Hardy filmmuziek transcripties en de arrangementen van Paul Whiteman gespeeld door het Saxophone Soctette, die weer opgedoken en uitgevoerd zijn. Hij speelde in de John Clayton Tribute Big Band, was gefascineerd door de muziek van Al Gallodoro, die hij naar Nederland haalde om met de Beau Hunks te spelen en als klarinetspeler houdt hij enorm van de muziek van Sidney Bechet.
