Aurora electrifies the audience of the Middelburg festival

When I first heard that Avishai Cohen would join the 4th International Jazz Festival in Middelburg in the south west part of The Netherlands, scheduled May, 2010, he was no more then a just a name for me. I'd never heard about him nor did I heard his bass before, although ....... A week before the concert, I listened to one of my favorite record sets - the Chick Corea + Origin complete Week At The Blue Note - a registration of 6 shows ( three days - early January 1998) at the Blue Note Club in New York City. It's one of my favorite live recordings, because it gives you the opportunity to listen to "all" Blue Note club concerts of the first days of January, 1998. When I listened to one of the shows, I wondered who the bass player was. Guess who: Avishai Cohen.

Avishai Cohen joined the 4th International Jazz Festival of Middelburg on the 23rd of May, 2010. He brought his ensemble featuring Shai Maestro at the piano and keyboards, Hamar Doari on percussion, Amos Hoffman on oud and guitar and Karen Malka vocals. And, of course, the leader Avishai Cohen played his bass and sung.
Love to share with you one of the Hebrew sung tunes he performed in Middelburg, entitled Alon Basela, which handles about an oak tree.

Avishai Cohen, born in Naharia (Israel) April 1970, started to play the piano at the age of nine. In 1984 the Cohen family moved to St. Louis. He became fascinated listening to the music of Jaco Pastorius, who played the bass in bands like Blood Sweat and Tears and Weather Report. Before he started to play with Chick Corea he performed with Paquito d'Rivera and the Panamanian piano player Danilo Perez. The latter was one of the members of his first band with Ravi Coltrane, Jason Lindler and Steve Wilson to name some. Now, in 2010, he made almost a dozen records and Aurora is his latest one.

During the Middelburg concert Avishai surprised me with his sound - his music as released on the Blue Note Aurora album. Remarkable for me was the presence of Amos Hoffman who played the oud. The oud is an Arab string instrument and looks like an ancient lute. The oud is not often used in jazz and the only musician I remember playing the oud was Lloyd Miller, an American multi-instrumentalist, who had is own TV-program for NIRTV in Tehran ( Iran - then Persia) and played and studied the Persian music. He brought these weird instruments to the States and experimented with it in concerts. He says, that he inspired Don Ellis to use oriental insturments. Well, he is now a professor in Oriental Music. Avishai says: Jazz is now moving into a great era. For many years there were just two movements: the traditionalists and the modernist. For a lot of jazz fans the jazz came to an end with Charlie Parker - for others it was Coltrane, Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor. Traditionalist are speaking of OKOM ( = Our Kind of Music) in forums and I learned that the first "modernists" are now elderly people too. Jazz fans are now discovering a new approach to the genre which give priority to mixing, intermingling, swing and the pure pleasure of music.

With this project, Aurora, Avishai loves to explore his roots - The music draws its source in the soil of his home land, at the crossroads of many cultures. Arab-Andalusian and Hebraic, it tells the story of Bedouins of the desert and speaks of life, love, youth and freedom. The use of the oud gives Avishai's arrangements that Arabic flavor which gives it very special sound. For the first time, Avishai Cohen sings, using his voice as a direct and powerful vehicle for his emotions. He sing songs in Hebrew, like El Hatzipor, Alon Basela, Leolam, Morenika ( part in Ladino, a language used by Sephardic jews), but also in Spanish ( Alfonsina y el mar and Noches noches). Some songs are in English. Avishai received a lot of request to publish translations of these songs. It is free available now.

Love to share the Spanish tune Alfonsina y el mar written by Ramirez and Luna

The audience of the festival was overwhelmed and fascinated by these unusual harmonies, rhythms and lyrics, which gave me flashbacks to our trips to Egypt, Syria and Jordan, like in tunes like Leolam. The five musicians showed that they belong to the best. Shai Maestro is a young promising Israeli piano player, who joined the Avishai Cohen group a few years ago - percussionist Hamar Doari surprised with his smooth almost brittle solo performances. Amos Hoffman, who played the oud happened to be a skilled guitar player too.

Most people where fascinated, impressed and almost in shock .... by the performance of Avishai Cohen's Aurora ensemble - Avishai electrifies the audience at each performance, I read somewhere and that seems to be not far from the truth. When I got home I had a lot to deal with, and that's how a good concert should be !! I've played the Aurora album since then a dozen times !!

Toen ik voor het eerst vernam dat Avishai Cohen op het 4de International Jazz Festival in Middelburg zou optreden, zei me zijn naam niet zoveel. Eerlijk gezegd had ik zijn naam nog nooit gehoord, laat staan dat ik zijn muziek kende. Hoewel ..... een week voor het optreden draaide ik de set the Chick Corea + Origin - a Complete Week At The Blue Note - een registratie van zes live shows ( drie dagen - opgenomen in de eerste dagen van 1998) vanuit de Blue Note Club in New York City. Het is één van mijn favoriete live-opnamen omdat het de kans geeft te luisteren naar "alle" shows, die die week door Chorea's groep gegeven werden. Al luisterend vroeg ik me af wie de bassist was - Je raadt het al: Avishai Cohen.

Avishai Cohen speelde op 23 mei 2010 tijdens het 4de Internationale Jazzfestival van Middelburg met zijn ensemble bestaande uit Shai Maestro aan de piano en keyboard, Hamar Doari op slagwerk, Amos Hoffman op oud, Karen Malka zang en, uiteraard, Avishai Cohen - zang en bas.
Het nummer Alon Basela, gezongen in het Hebreeuws, werd ook uitgevoerd in Middelburg en gaat over een eikenboom.

Avishai Cohen, geboren in Naharia (Israël) in april 1970, begon als negenjarige op de piano. In 1984 verhuisde hij met zijn ouders naar St. Louis. Hij raakte geboeid door Jaco Pastorius, bassist bij o.a. Blood Sweat and Tears en Weather Report. Voordat hij bij Chick Corea ging spelen trad hij op met Paquito d'Rivera en de Panamese pianist Danilo Perez. De laatstgenoemde speelde ook in één van Avishai's eerste eigen bands met o.a. Ravi Coltrane, Jason Lindler en Steve Wilson. Nu, in 2010, heeft hij al zo'n tiental cd’s op zijn naam staan en Aurora is zijn laatste.

Tijdens het concert op het abdijplein van Middelburg verraste Avishai met zijn muziek. Wat meteen opviel was dat Amos Hoffman de "oud" bespeelt, een Arabisch snaarinstrument dat veel weg heeft van een luit. De oud associeer je met Arabische muziek en niet met jazz - de enige die ik me herinner is Lloyd Miller, een Amerikaanse multi-instrumentalist, nu professor in o.a. de Perzische Muziek, die in de jaren zestig een eigen programma had op de Perzische NIRTV in Teheran ( Toen Perzië nu Iran) en later terug in de VS instrumenten als de oud, de zarb en de santur meebracht en introduceerde in de Jazz. Avishai zegt: Jazz is now moving into a great era. (= De Jazz is nu in een nieuw tijdvak aanbeland). For many years there were just two movements: the traditionalists and the modernist.(= Jarenlang waren er maar twee stromingen: de traditionele jazz en de moderne jazz). Voor heel wat jazzfans eindigde de jazz bij Charlie Parker of Coltrane of Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. De traditionalisten spreken in forums nog steeds over OKOM ( = Our Kind Of Music) en de Modernisten van toen zijn nu ook allemaal oude mannetjes geworden. Jazz fans are now discovering a new approach to the genre which give priority to mixing, intermingling, swing and the pure pleasure of music. (= Jazzliefhebbers ontdekken nu een nieuwe aanpak van het genre, waarin prioriteit heeft het mixen en elkaars stijlen leren kennen, swingen en het pure plezier van muziek maken.).

Met dit project, Aurora, wil Avishai zijn wortels leren kennen - de bron van zijn muziek ligt in zijn vaderland Israël, op het kruispunt van culturen. Arabische - en Hebreeuwse liederen vertellen het verhaal van woestijnbewoners en over het leven, liefde, de jeugd en de vrijheid. Door het gebruik van de oud krijgen Avishai's arrangementen dat vervreemdende Arabische geluid, dat het geheel zo speciaal maakt. Voor het eerst zing Avishai ook using his voice as a direct and powerful vehicle for his emotions.( = waarbij hij zijn stem gebruikt als een krachtig middel voor zijn emoties). De liederen die hij zingt zijn in het Hebreeuws, zoals het nummer El Hatzipor, Alon Basela, Leolam, Morenika ( deels in het Ladino, de taal van de Sefardische joden), maar ook in het Spaans ( Alfonsina y el mar en Noches noches). Sommige nummers zijn in het Engels. Aangezien de Hebreeuwse teksten voor velen van ons ontoegankelijk zijn ontving Avishai veel verzoeken voor vertalingen - deze zijn nu vrij op het internet te vinden.

Luister maar eens naar het Spaanse nummer Alfonsina y el mar geschreven door Ramirez en Luna.

Het publiek tijdens het festival was vooral overweldigd en gefascineerd door dit bijzondere concert - De ongebruikelijke harmonieën, ritmes en teksten, zoals in Leolam, gaven me flashbacks naar de muziek die ik op reizen naar Egypte, Syrie en Jordanië gehoord had. De vijf musici lieten er geen twijfel over bestaan dat ze hun instrumenten tot in de puntjes beheersten. Shai Maestro is een jonge veelbelovende Israëlische pianist, die sinds een paar jaar bij Avishai speelt en slagwerker Hamar Doari verraste met zijn subtiele ritmische kunstwerkjes die hij produceerde. Amos Hoffman, die behalve oud ook verdienstelijk gitaar speelde, weet als geen ander het geluid van zijn instrument te integreren.

De meeste festivalgangers zullen, zoals ik, naar huis gegaan zijn met de opdracht e.e.a. nog eens te laten bezinken - de plaat Aurora, ter plekke aangeschaft voor de volle prijs ( bij Bol.com ligt hij voor nog geen tientje) is daarbij een fascinerend aandenken, dat al heel wat keren op de "draaitafel" gelegen heeft.

Avishai Cohen veroverde moeiteloos het Middelburgse abdijplein met zijn oriëntaalse klanken. Door het gebruik van de oud en het vertolken van Hebreeuwse liederen verruimde hij de grenzen van het festival - de grenzen van de jazz. Jazz is niet meer kiezen tussen oude stijl of moderne jazz - de hedendaagse jazz gebruikt elementen uit andere culturen, andere instrumenten, andere klanken, maar blijft, desondanks, volledig overeind.
Avishai Cohen trad op 23 mei 2010 met zijn kwintet tijdens het 4de Internationale Jazzfestival van Middelburg. Als je bij wilt blijven vraag dan de Keep Swinging nieuwsbrief aan.
