Little Town Jazzband

A month ago I saw her back - I recognized her from the outside - I got the same warm feelings like twenty years ago. It was as if we hadn't been separated for so long and had lived apart all those years, since I passed her into the hands of strangers.
If the music wasn't so great, you could decide to obtain a copy of this LP because of the cover. A great design made by Peter De Lang, also responsable for the percussion in the band. I bought myself a copy early 1980s, I guess, and it must have been one of my last LPs I bought, as the CD was conquering the world since the 1980s. Later I sold all my LPs, because the Compact Disc was better, more modern, new, with a better sound quality and witihin the foreseeable future the wouldn't be any gramophones to play it and all kind of that sales talk and because I couldn't afford to collect a second collection of jazz on CD I sold all those dated LP-stuff; This LP also found a place in the sales-box in Boskoop at the Doctor Jazz Reunion.
When I recognized her I invited her to join my collection again: The LP of the Little Town Jazzband, titled Snookum ( RCA NL-44031). This Little Town Jazzband was founded in 1978 and based in Schagen, a small city, better a Little Town in the northwest part of The Netherlands. They became a bit famous as winners of the Heusden's Dixiland Day 1981 ( really, Dixiland spelled that way), one of the major music festivals of Heusden and surroundings. This album, Snookum, was its first one and I guess more albums have been followed, although there's but few information available on the internet.
The band contains Ab Van Riesen on cornet, Klaas Ratelband on trombone, Hans Serdijn on reeds and flutes ( even a recorder in a great solo in the Yard Bird Suite), Cees Jongerius piano, Peter Kleuters banjo and vocal, Gerard Van Schie sousaphone and Peter De Lang, percussion. Their repertoire contains 1920s stuff, that could be labeled as white New Orleans dance music, a kind of hot dance music. It reminds me to the music of bands like the Halfway House Orchestra. If you are a follower of this Keep Swinging web log you should know that I was ( and am ) fascinated by this kind of music, played by the Hot Dance Bands from the 1920s. These musicians play a very arranged kind of music, recorded very open and transparant, no hodge podge of sounds, but well arranged, with a steady bass ( sousaphone), a percussionist who uses the cymbal and woodblock, like in the early 1920s, the collective improvisations. They play some traditionals like Snookum, the title song, also recorded by the Halfway House Orchestra of Albert Brunies and tunes like Jacksonville Gal and Ellington's Rent Part Blues. And what to think about the Charlie Parker tune Yard Bird Suite? No problem - think about the great Anachronic Jazz Band , very popular in those days: New Wine In Old Bottles.
It felt good to play her again on my gramophone - first class nostalgia for me.
I read that the band still exist and seems to be still active, although I found them labeled somewhere as a DIXYLAND Band, ( Oh now - not again.....). This band doesn't play, in my opinion, dixieland music at all. They play in a very pure 1920s hot dance band style. If you find this great album, don't hestitate, buy it - even if you don't like this music; you'll enjoy the cover.
Mind that there is also a Swiss Little Town Jazzband, directed by Weggi Seiler.

Een maand geleden zag ik haar terug - ik herkende haar aan haar uiterlijk - Ik kreeg weer datzelfde warme gevoel als twintig jaar geleden. Het voelde alsof we geen jaren zonder elkaar hadden geleefd; elkaar hadden moeten missen, sinds die dag dat ik haar uit handen had gegeven.
Als de muziek niet zo geweldig geweest was, had ik de LP wellicht ook gekocht, al was het alleen al om haar hoes. De hoes is schitterend ontworpen door Peter de Lang, die ook verantwoordelijk is voor het slagwerk op de plaat. Ik kocht mijn eerste copie van deze plaat begin jaren tachtig toe hij net uit was en wellicht was het één van de laatste LPs, die ik ooit gekocht heb, aangezien rond die tijd de CD aan zijn opmars begon. Ik verkocht later al mijn LPs omdat de Compact Disc beter was, moderner, nieuwer, met een betere geluidskwaliteit en waar-moet-je-straks-je-LPs-op-afspelen? en al dat soort verkooppraatjes. Bovendien wilde ik geen tweede collectie met CDs naast mijn LPs opbouwen, dus kocht ik met het geld van die ouderwetse gedateerde LPs voortaan CDs - ook deze ging in de Bona-doos in Boskoop.
Ik herkende haar meteen en dus mocht ze, zonder lang nadenken, weer in mijn verzameling terugkeren: de LP van de Little Town Jazzband, getiteld Snookum ( RCA NL-44031.) Deze Little Town Jazzband is opgericht eind jaren zeventig in Schagen, een klein stadje, a Little Town, in Noord Holland. Ze kregen wat bekendheid door hun eerste prijs in 1981 op de Heusdense Dixiland Dag. ( Echt, er staat Dixiland Dag), één van de belangrijkste muziekfestivals uit die streek. De plaat, Snookum, was hun eerste en ik heb niet kunnen nagaan of er later nog meer gevolgd zijn.
De band bestaat uit Ab van Riesen op cornet, Klaas Ratelband op trombone, Hans Serdijn speelt de rietinstrumenten en fluiten ( ook een schitterende blokfluitsolo op Yard Bird Suite), Cees Jongerius piano, Peter Kleuters banjo en zang, Gerard van Schie sousafoon en Peter de Lang, slagwerk. Hun repertoire bestaat uit nummers uit de jaren twintig, in een stijl die het best omschreven kan worden als blanke dansmuziek uit New Orleans, Hot Dance Music. Het doet me herinneren aan de muziek van de Halfway House Orchestra. Wie mijn bijdragen in deze Keep Swinging weblog een beetje volgt, weet dat ik in die tijd (en nog wel) geboeid was door deze hot danceband stijl. Deze muzikanten spelen zeer beheersd in een open struktuur, geen brij van geluiden - elk instrument speelt zijn rol en is transparant opgenomen. De muziek is doordacht gearrangeerd met een stevige basis door een swingende sousafoon , een slagwerker die zich weet te beperken ( zoals het hoort bij deze muziek) tot bekkens en woodblock en verder collectieve improvisaties, zoals dat in New Orleans gebruikelijk was. Ze spelen een aantal bekende nummers zoals het titelstuk Snookum, dat ook op het repertoire stond van de Halfway House Orchestra van Albert Brunies (uiteraard deze band meteen weer eens gedraaid) en nummers als Jacksonville Gal en Ellington's Rent Part Blues. En wat te denken van het Charlie Parker nummer Yard Bird Suite, met een knipoog naar de toen populaire Anachronic Jazz Band: Nieuwe Wijn In Oude Flessen.
Het gaf een goed gevoel deze schitterende plaat weer te zien en te horen spelen op mijn platenspeler: voor mij nostalgie van de bovenste plank. Ik begreep uit de spaarzame informatie op internet dat de groep nog steeds bestaat en ik vond ze terug, gelabeld als DIXYLAND Band. ( Nee toch, 't zal geen waar zijn). Deze band speelt, naar mijn bescheiden inzicht, echt geen dixieland. Ze speelde toen in ieder geval een hele zuivere vorm van vroege gearangeerde blanke hot dance music. Mocht je deze LP tegenkomen - koop hem, al was het alleen om de hoes.
