The Cry Of Jazz
( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)
A few days ago I saw the 1959 documentary The Cry Of Jazz - a film by Edward O. Bland for the very first time. I had seen this DVD in my record shop for a long time, but as it was full priced I didn't buy it. The sub title of the film made me anxious: The Cry Of Jazz - featuring SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA.
Sun Ra, born as Herman Blount in Birmingham Alabama, May 1914 passed away May 1993. He was a composer, bandleader ( of his Arkestra) and piano player. I don't have any music from him in my collection, not on CD, LP, tape nor cassette, but I remember his colourfull clothes and strange outfits from the outer space. He was active in the Chicago avant-garde music scene during the 1950s and 1960s with his Myth-Science ( or Solar) Arkestra. He also played in the film documentary The Cry Of Jazz, for which he composed the music. That's why I bought this documentary during a sale for a couple of euros.
Last week I watched this rather short documentary, only 35 minutes. It was not what I expected, although it seems to be a very important landmark in the history of Black People. The documentary has seven parts, in which four have a discussion in a house between some young Black and White Americans. They are discussing the origins of jazz and the blackmen claim that jazz is the Soul of the History of the Negroes in the USA; the Black American life shared a structural identy with jazz. All white jazz are extracts of black music; Dixieland or cool Jazz are no jazz in the Blackmen's opinion. This discussion is, of course, not so special, but in the film black people openly challenged for the very first time (1959 !) whites in a film. The film is completly made by blacks, with an interracial cast. It is a low budget film and the discussion is rather outdated. The other three parts of the film are fragments of a concert with Sun Ra and his Arkestra, but, although the musicians on the film are beautiful designed in black and white, the music is rather "mainstream" jazz, not progressive and surely not really avant-garde. They even illustrate how the New Orleans music sounded. No intergalactical designed clothes or colourfull outfits either as I remember from Sun Ra.

The Cry Of Jazz - a film by Edward O. Bland. De ondertitel Featuring Sun Ra & His Arkestra maakte me wel erg nieuwsgierig.

I found a music fragment of this documentary, so you can see that the artists are filmed in an artistic way in black and white.
