Keep (it) Swinging: R. Crumbs Heroes of Blues, Jazz & Country

Six weeks ago I posted a contribution about the soundtrack of the R. Crumb documentary CRUMB. That soundtrack was a compilations of piano and guitar tracks used in the film. I wondered who played that tunes, and I learned that most of it was played by David Boeddinghaus (piano parts) and Craig Ventresco ( finger picking guitar tracks). It made me anxious to the documentary. Thanks to Jo I was able to see the Terry Zwigoff 2004 documentary CRUMB, subtitled Weird Sex, Obsession, Comic Books and all that Jazz.

The documentary gives an inside view on Crumb's sexual obsessions, about his family and his comic books, and nothing at all about his passion of record collecting. At the end of the film he packs, together with his son, his 78rpms as he moves to the south of France, where he bought a little house from the money he got when he sold some original comic note-books (!). So if you're fasinated by Crumbs record collection only, you can let this documentary pass.

The book R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz & Country might me of more interest. It shows a collection of drawings made by R. Crumb in the mid 1980s. He made a collection of trading cards, with drawings of musicians from the early Twentieth Century. It is a great collection, especially, that's my opinion, the part with the Pioneers of Country Music. Why? Maybe because most of the musicians were unknown to me and they most of the musicians are portrayed as a group, because, I guess, it were the only pictures available to copy. Great !! Ever seen Mumford Bean and his Itawambians, Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers or Hoyt Ming and his Pep Steppers? Well, this is your chance !!

The book contains a 21 track CD with historical recordings, so you can hear bands like the Weems String Band ( Dick, Frank and Jesse Weems on fiddles and cello with Alvin Conder banjo and vocal.) on Greenback Dollar and see the band in the book on page 229., with the biographical information available. I'd suggest. Buy it before it's out of print. It will become a collector's item !!

Zes weken geleden plaatste ik een bijdrage over de soundtrack van de R. Crumb documentaire CRUMB. Die soundtrack bestond uit een verzameling ragtimenummers gespeeld op piano of gitaar, die voor kwamen in de film. Ik vroeg me toen af, wie de muziek speelde en dankzij een aantal lezers bleken dit David Boeddinghaus (piano-stukken) en Craig Ventresco ( fingerpicking gitaarnummers). Ik werd nieuwsgierig naar de documentaire en dankzij Jo kon ik kijken naar deze Terry Zwigoff documentaire CRUMB, met als bijtitel Weird Sex, Obsession, Comic Books and all that Jazz. ( Harde sex, obsessies, cartoon-albums en al dat spul ..... al die Jazz )
De documentaire geeft een goed beeld van de sexuele frustraties, die Crumb's leven en carrriere bepaald hebben; over zijn vreemde familie, zijn stripverhalen, maar niets over zijn passie van platenverzamelen. Alleen op het eind van de film pakt hij, samen met zijn zoon, zijn 78-toerenplatenverzameling in, omdat hij naar Zuid Frankrijk gaat verhuizen, waar hij een huis van de opbrengst van de verkoop van een aantal originele schetsboekjes (!) heeft kunnen kopen. Ben je dus, net als ik, benieuwd naar Crumb's platencollectie, dan kun je deze film beter links laten liggen.

Het boek R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz & Country lijkt dan een veel betere keus. Het laat een serie tekeningen zien, die door R. Crumb gemaakt zijn midden jaren tachtig. Hij maakte een serie kaarten met daarop afbeeldingen van vroeg twintigste eeuwse musici uit de blues, jazz en country scene. Een schitterende collectie, vooral het deel met de Pioneers of Country Music. Waarom? Misschien omdat ik die namen slecht ken, maar vooral ook omdat ze meestal als groep staan afgebeeld - waarschijnlijk nagetekend van de enige foto's die overgebleven zijn. Prachtig toch? Heb jij wel eens gehoord van Mumford Bean and his Itawambians, Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers of Hoyt Ming and his Pep Steppers? Dan heb je nu een kans. Bovendien geeft Crumb bij elke tekening een korte omschrijving.

Het boek bevat een CD met 21 nummers met historische 78-toeren opnamen, zodat je ook een deel van de muziek van de artiesten op de tekeningen kunt horen. Zo komt bijvoorbeeld de Weems familie tot leven met het nummer Greenback Dollar. Deze Weems String Band ( Dick, Frank en Jesse Weems op violen en cello en Alvin Conder banjo en zang.) spelen op de CD en kijken je aan op pagina 229. Een schitterend boek. Kopen .... snel ...... want het wordt een collectors item.
