Lenny Breau
This time a contribution about a CD Jo pointed me to, a reissue of an unissued session made by Lenny Breau in 1961. This so-called Hallmark Sessions was reissued on the CD Lenny Breau - The Hallmark Sessions. For me, Lenny Breau, was rather unknown, although I saw him playing in a fragment at the great Tal Farlow documentary Talmage Farlow where he chats with Tal Farlow.
Lenny Breau was born in Auburn, Maine, August 1941 and passed away August 1984, 43 years old. As a kid he learned to play the guitar and started in the Country-music style in Canada, as his parent were active as C&W singers. He was fascinated by the guitar jazz of Tal Farlow and other jazz guitar players like Barney Kessel and Johnny Smith. His first recording was on RCA thanks to Chet Atkins. The style of Lenny Breau is a surprise as he uses all kinds of elements from the country music; he uses the Flamenco guitar techniques into his finger picking style guitar and jazz elements from hardbop piano players like Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner.
Like so many jazz musicians from that period Lenny Breau became the victim of alcohol and drugs and was unable to play for some times. He died under suspect circumstances at a young age. These Hallmark Sessions was recorded in the Hallmark Studios in Toronta, Canada 24th of November 1961 and was his first jazz recording, aged twenty years old. As told, these recordings were unissued. It contains jazz standards, like I'll Remember April, but also Flamenco and Country style music. Some compositions are released here for the very first time. As an extra also stereo versions of the trio pieces have been added.
Here's a young Lenny Breau leading the rhythm section in a rendition of "Georgia On My Mind", from the Canadian show "A Touch of Jazz" recorded and aired originally in 1961
Tal Farlow and Lenny Breau chats about guitar and music, and then plays together
