Three and a half year ago the Keep (it) Swinging blog posted a review of Jorgelina Alemán's album El Jazz en las Venas in Dutch, Spanish and English. This album, which was recorded at a live performance at the Teatro N/D Ateneo (Buenos Aires - Argentina) on the last day of May, 2003, has been unavailable for a long  time and is now re-issued, including a bonus track ....... I love to re-post parts of this original review with some new photos.

Jorgelina Aleman, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, November 1966, is, nowadays, a celebrated jazz vocalist, who plays to full houses  all around Argentina and surroundings, with her band, featuring Daniel Cossarini at the piano, Néstor Barbieri on guitar, Rubén Ferrari on double bass and Matias Goytia on drums, and with the unsurpassable conjunction of distinction and charm with which she handles her musical repertory, even the most demanding audiences, the liner notes read. Being the granddaughter of the great Argentine guitar player and entertainer Oscar Alemán, she followed in her grandfather's footsteps as a vocalist and entertainer. The album contains 15 tracks, most jazz traditionals from the All American Songbook, like the St. Louis Blues, I can't Give you Anything But Love or Making Wooppie (sic), but also a bunch of tunes, made famous by Oscar Aleman, as played during his 50 year carreer in showbiz. Tune like Besame Mucho, Tengo ritmo (= Crazy Rhythm) and, of course, his signature tune Hombre Mio are known by each Oscar Alemán fan.

At the age of four, Jorgelina started to dance ballet; at the age of 15 she studied jazz-dance choreography with Moira Chapman in the Escuela de Artes Escénicos FAMA for 10 years. When she completed her study for dancing, she continued Comedia Musical ( = Musical Comedy) in the prestigious institute from director Manuel Gonzalez Gil, where they found out that she had a great voice. Het debut was in 1997 when she performed with a blues band singing gospels, negro-spirituals and songs in the jazz and blues repertoire. As she became fascinated by the music of her grandfather, the music she has heard at home since she was a kid ( her grandfather passed away when she was 14 years young woman), she started to study Black Music and music lessons from Cristina Aguayo, a well known blues singer in Argentina. She also wanted to become and actress and studied at the Estudia Artes dramáticas ( = a drama school) of Carmen Vallejo, actress and Oscar's widow.

The reissued album contains, except a video clip of Besame Mucho y El Show, also a tribute to her grandfather, Stardust, in which she sings with the original 1944 recording by Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing. It's a pity that the original source was dated wrong as the record used, Polvo de Estrelas (= Stardust) was recorded at the 26th of October, 1944 by Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing and not in 1943 by Oscar Alemán y u orquesta, a band which started recording in the early 1950s. A pity, as the online Oscar Alemán discography shows the right information ( please scroll down). This bonus track is also available on the recently released 2cd album Oscar Aleman: Eternamente vivo - a release of rare 1950s - 1970s radio programs and live concerts by Oscar Alemán.

In de jaren zestig en zeventig van de vorige eeuw, was Oscar Alemán regelmatig te horen in allerlei radio- en tv-uitzendingen in Argentinië. Sinds eind jaren vijftig zijn er geen nieuwe platen meer gemaakt, vanaf het moment dat het contract met Oscar Alemán en zijn Orchesta de Jazz en Odeón (Argentina) afgelopen was. Wel zijn er nog studio-opnamen gemaakt midden jaren zestig, waarin Oscar Alemán een nieuw kwintet, genaamd Oscar Alemán y sus Cinco Caballeros leidt, maar deze opnamen kwamen pas veel later uit op vinyl, eind jaren zeventig.

Samenvattend betekende dit dat liefhebbers van Alemán's muziek, genoegen moesten nemen met een gat van zo'n vijftien jaar, tussen 1957 en 1972, totdat Redondel, een klein label, een aantal nieuwe opnamen van hem uitbracht. Gelukkig hadden verzamelaars in Argentinië op tape opnamen vastgelegd van radio en tv-opnamen en live-optredens, en deze opnamen, aangevuld met met opnamen van Oscar's eigen privé-verzameling en die van naaste vrienden, circuleerden al langer bij verzamelaars, maar werden nooit commercieel uitgebracht. Een selectie van deze opnamen is nu eindelijk uitgebracht, op een dubbelalbum op het label Fonocal (FONOCAL 24 1/2) getiteld Oscar Alemán - Eternamente Vivo. Deze dubbelaar werd samengesteld door Daniel Cossarini en Edgardo "Nano" Suárez uit materiaal, dat ze mochten gebruiken van Estanislao & José Iacona, Jorgelina Alemán - een succesvol zangeres en kleindochter van Oscar Alemán. Zij schreef de tekst bij de cd's en brengt een ode aan haar grootvader door mee te zingen met een versie van Stardust, dat Oscar Alemán oorspronkelijk op 78-toeren uitbracht.

Op de dubblecd vind je 34 nummers met live-opnamen van Oscar Alemán, opnieuw gemasterd van bandopnamen, helaas van wisselende kwaliteit. Het is jammer dat de uitgave ook geen informatie bevatten van data en opname-omstandigheden van de oorspronkelijke banden ....... Ze bevatten een mix van radio, TV en live-concerten, aangevuld met een aantal privéopnamen; een leuke kluif voor discografen, al bevat de online Oscar Alemán discografie wellicht wat aanwijzingen m.b.t. de opnamen, die wellicht deels ook in Oscar's privé-collectie zaten.

Optreden Oscar AlemánHet repertoire, geselecteerd op de twee cd's, is een mix van stijlen, sommige zijn bekend doordat Alemán ze eerder op de plaat vastgelegd heeft, zoals Sweet Georgia Brown, Tea For Two, St Louis Blues, Tengo Ritmo etc., alhoewel deze live-opnamen weer een andere kijk geven op Oscar's vakmanschap en improvisatie - een mooie aanvulling van de studio-opnamen en een goudmijn voor hen die zich willen verdiepen in Oscar's gitaarstijl. Er zitten ook nummers bij van titels, die Oscar nooit opnam, zoals populaire nummers als La,La,La en Dang Dang, en verder een aantal; verrassingen, zoals Oscar die zich waagt aan een Frans chanson, begeleid op zijn gitaar.


TV-optreden
Een hoogtepunt van het geheel zijn de uitvoeringen van soloversies van Man of Mine, La Cumparsita en de St Louis Blues en verder tracks opgenomen op twee live-concerten in het Teatro del Buen Air in 1971 met Oscar Alemán begeleid door Guillermo José Iacona op ritmegitaar - vooral de mooie uitvoering van Cuando los santos vienen marchando is waard genoemd te worden, aangezien dit nummer later, in een zelfde versie, opgenomen werd op de lp Alemán 72' uitgebracht op Redondel, - een echt kunststukje om van dit doodgeslagen dixielandvolkslied nog iets bijzonders te maken.

Helaas zijn er ook een aantal nummers, die door hun belabberde geluidskwaliteit, geen aanwinst zijn op deze dubbelaar, voornamelijk enkele Radio El Mundo uitzendingen uit ca. 1967 en de low-fi audio-kwaliteit vind je ook terug bij een vastgelegd tv-programma. Wat deze tracks wel toevoegen, is het enthousiasme van het publiek en het applaus dat geregistreerd is, wat Oscar Alemán ten deel viel tijdens dit soort opnamen gedurende de jaren zestig en zeventig. Je hoort hier de showman, de entertainer, die hij vooral was, die met zijn fabelachtige techniek, grappen en grollen en humor, het publiek inpakte, ook al waren zijn begeleiders in die dagen van een minder hoog gehalte. Een paar van deze TV-opnamen zijn, zij het alleen als geluid, terug te vinden op internet. Hieronder vind je zo'n voorbeeld van el maestro tijdens zo'n uitzending: geniet van het nummer Tengo Ritmo, dat uitgezonden werd op Canal 9 in het programma Sabados de la Bondad, gepresenteerd door Hector Coire

De laatste opname van disc 2 is een moderne mix, een dub van Jorgelina Alemán, die de Engelse tekst zingt bij Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust over een versie, die Oscar voor Odeon maakte op 26 oktober 1944: Polvo de Estrellas door Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing. Volgens Jorgelina, Oscar's kleindochter, werd ze geïnspireerd om dit vast te leggen, door eenzelfde experiment dat Natalie Cole uithaalde, ter herinnering aan haar vader Nat King Cole, door haar stem over een opname te leggen van een nummer, dat Nat voor zijn dood opnam. Je houdt er van of je houdt er niet van, maar zie het als een eerbetoon van een ster aan haar grootvader - een bewijs dat ze de familietraditie heeft voortgezet. Je kunt het ook zien als een eerbetoon en bewondering voor deze grote Argentijnse gitarist. Deze studio-opname heeft Jorgelina overigens ook gebruikt op haar, onlangs heruitgebrachte cd: Jorgelina Alemán: El jazz en las Venas. (Fonocal 526) Luister maar eens naar: Jorgelina Alemán met Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing in de begeleiding: Stardust.

Afgelopen week, op de 20ste februari, zou Oscar Aleman 103 jaar oud geworden zijn en dan is deze heruitgave natuurlijk een prachtig eerbetoon aan deze onnavolgbare Master of Swing: Eternamente Vivo.
De dubbel-cd is te koop bij allerlei online webshops - het aantal exemplaren lijkt beperkt, dus wees er snel bij.
Tenslotte nog een geluidsfragment van een live TV-optreden van Oscar Alemán voor het Canal 9, programma Sabados continuados, gepresenteerd door Leonardo Simons en uitgezonden op 20 februari 1970, waarbij Oscar Alemán begeleid wordt door het orkest van Santos Lipesker met een versie van Moritat (= Mack The Knife) gevolgd door, hoe toepasselijk, het nummer Happy Birthday.

De muziek van de fameuze Argentijnse gitarist Oscar Alemán, die deze week 103 jaar geleden geboren werd, lijkt in Argentinië ondertussen volledig heruitgebracht. Zelfs zijn radio-, privé- of theateroptredens circuleren al jaren rond bij verzamelaars - nu zijn ze ook deels op cd verkrijgbaar. De dubbel-cd Oscar Alemán - Eternamente Vivo bevat zo'n 34 nummers, van wisselende geluidskwaliteit, die een indruk geven van de populariteit van el maestro tussen ongeveer 1945 en 1972 - een must-have voor diegenen die alles van hem willen horen, maar voor hen die nieuwsgiering zijn naar zijn muziek is er wel een betere uitgangpunt te verzinnen. Oscar Alemán: Nacido el 20 de Febrero de 1909, en la República Argentina. Oriundo de Machagai, provenía de una familia de músicos. Guitarrista, showman, un gran artista que desde Machagai, El Chaco, se proyectó al mundo y volvió triunfante a su país.
Oscar Alemán: Born on the 20th of February 1909 in the small town of Machagui in the republic of Argentinia as a member of a musical family. A child born in a musical family. Guitar player, showman, known in all parts of the world, who scored triumphes in his own country.

As planned by the undersecretary for culture in Machagai City, Mrs. Favia Calvo together with Mr. Eduardo Centurión and the mayor of the city of Machagai, Mr Hector Justino Vega and his wife Marisol, supported by the Culture Secretary of Chaco, headed by professor Francisco Romero, we traveled to the Chaco region on February 19th to perform two shows, one in Machagai City on February the 20th, and the other in Resistencia City on February 21st.

India Morena Aleman (Oscar's daughter) and Juan Manuel Miguez (Oscar's great grand child) where invited too and came all the way from Buenos Aires. Guitar player Juan Martinez and pianist Daniel Cossarini were also part of the show. Alejandro Ruiz and Gabriel Vignoli played in the rhythm section, on bass and drums respectively. Guest stars were Juan Manuel Miguez (guitar), Eduardo Centurión ( piano), Alejandro De Salvo, a Tanduil resident, who plays his instrument like a real Alemaniac; in the style of Oscar (guitar), Flavia Calvo and Lucrecia García ( singers)

It is remarkable to learn with how much enthusiasm this homage due to the fact that Oscar Aleman was born here 100 years ago was organized and it was good to learn that the interest of the audience for the concerts increased. Many people, some from locals tribes, told Jorgelina their stories related to her grand father and grand mother, who was a proud member of the Toba tribe herself.Soundcheck at the el CECUAL venue in the city of Resistencia (photo courtesy: Daniel Cossarini)
Both shows were packed to the doors and people had to remain standing as there were no more seats available; the organizers were amazed about that and the number of people was beyond their wildest expectations.

It would be great if these kind of concerts would be held more frequently in the Chaco province in the future. Perhaps these festivities shook the people of Chaco awake and they remembered the great master Oscar Alemán and, above all, the fact that he was from Chaco and was one of them; a lot of people realized that for the very first time.

The local authorities of Machagai City proclaimed February the 20th as el día de la Ciudad de Machagai, the Day of the City of Machagai, a day to celebrate Oscar Aleman’s birthday and to promote the city. In the city of Resitencia, where the second show was scedulded, the Cultural Centre will be refurbished and extended and when this has been finished this venue will be renamed after Oscar Alemán too.

Of course we hope, that these festivities and initiatives might be a start to a true recognition of the great guitar player, vocalist and entertainer Oscar Alemán in his own country Argentina.

Het belangrijkste eerbetoon aan een groot artiest in de muziek, door zijn kleindochter de zangeres Jorgelina Alemán, begeleid door ervaren musici in het bijzonder Ricardo Pellican.
Oscar Alemán: Nacido el 20 de Febrero de 1909, en la República Argentina. Oriundo de Machagai, provenía de una familia de músicos. Guitarrista, showman, un gran artista que desde Machagai, El Chaco, se proyectó al mundo y volvió triunfante a su país.
Oscar Alemán: Geboren op 20 februari 1909 in het plaatsje Machagui in de republiek Argentinië als telg uit een muzikale familie. Gitarist, showman, bekend over de hele wereld, die triomfen vierde in zijn eigen land.

Op uitnodiging van de tweede secretaries voor Cultuur van de gemeente Machagai, een stad in Noord Argentinië, Favia Calvo, in overleg met Eudardo Centurión en de burgemeester van de gemeente Machagai, Hector Justino Vega en zijn vrouw Marisol, geassisteerd door de afgevaardigde voor cultuur van het district professor Francisco Romero, reisden we op 19 februari 2009 vanuit Buenos Aires naar het afgelezen Chaco district om twee shows te geven; één in het plaatsje Machagai op 20 februari 2009 en de andere een dag later in de nabijgelegen hoofdstad van deze regio, Resistencia.

Beide shows, georganiseerd ter ere van het feit dat Oscar Alemán hier 100 jaar geleden geboren werd, waren opgezet rond Oscar’s kleindochter Jorgelina Aleman, zangeres en de bekende Argentijnse gitarist Ricardo Péllican. Tijdens de show waren er ook filmbeelden te zien uit de documentaire Vida Con Swing (= een leven vol swing) en fragmenten uit Oscar Aleman’s films, zoals Historia de una carta en Idolo del tango; het publiek bleek er aangenaam door verrast. v.l.n.r: Juan Martinez, Juan Manuel Miguez (de achterkleinzoon van Oscar Alemán) en Gabriel Vignoli (foto: Daniel Cossarini)
India Morena Aleman (de dochter van Oscar) en Juan Manuel Miguez (Oscar's achterkleinzoon) waren ook uitgenodigd en helemaal uit Buenos Aires hierheen gekomen. Verder speelden tijdens de show gitarist Juan Martinez, pianist Daniel Cossarini, Alejandro Ruiz op bas en Gabriel Vignoli op slagwerk.
Er waren tijdens de show gastoptredens van Juan Manuel Miguez (gitaar), Eduardo Centurión ( piano), Alejandro De Salvo, een gitarist uit Tandil; een echte Alemaniac, aangezien hij de gitaar bespeelt in de stijl van Oscar. Verder Flavia Calvo en Lucrecia García, beiden zang.

Opvallend was met hoeveel enthousiasme deze festiviteiten waren georganiseerd rondom de herdenking van het feit dat Oscar Aleman hier 100 jaar geleden geboren werd en opgroeide in deze arme streek. Het was fantastisch om te merken dat de belangstelling van de bezoekers toenam naar mate de festiviteiten vorderden. Veel mensen, er waren heel wat autochtonen uit deze regio, waren op de concerten afgekomen. Ze vertelden, met name aan Jorgelina, een heleboel verhalen over haar familie, haar grootvader en – moeder. Veel van hen behoorden, net als de moeder van Oscar tot de stam van de Toba indianen.

Beide optredens waren compleet uitverkocht en voor al die mensen waren er geen stoelen genoeg zodat ze moesten staan. De organisators waren blij verrast voor zo’n hoge opkomst en het zou natuurlijk prachtig zijn dat deze concerten een terugkerende traditie zouden kunnen worden in het Chaco district. Hopelijk hebben deze festiviteiten de mensen uit Chago wakker geschud en ze bewust gemaakt van het feit dat de grote Oscar Aleman één van hen was; één van hun eigen mensen - iets wat velen zich hiervoor niet realiseerden.

De plaatselijke autoriteiten hebben overigens 20 februari uitgeroepen El día de la Ciudad de Machagai, de Dag van de plaats Machagai, enerzijds als eerbetoon aan Oscar Aleman die op die dag geboren werd en anderzijds om de plek te promoten.

Bovendien hebben ze besloten om één van de hoofdwegen naar Oscar Aleman te vernoemen. En, het kon niet op, in Resistencia, waar we de dag daarna optraden in het plaatselijke cultureel centrum, hoorden we dat dit gebouw binnenkort verbouwd zal worden en opnieuw ingericht en voortaan eveneens naar Oscar Aleman genoemd zal gaan worden.

En nu maar hopen dat al deze aandacht mag leiden tot een herwaardering van de muziek van Oscar Aleman in zijn geboortestreek in het bijzonder en in heel Argentinië in het algemeen.

El mejor homenaje a un gran artista, a traves de la música, de la mano de su nieta, la cantante Jorgelina Alemán, acompañada por grandes músicos y con la participación especial del Guitarrista Ricardo Pellican.

Oscar Alemán: Nacido el 20 de Febrero de 1909, en la República Argentina. Oriundo de Machagai, provenía de una familia de músicos. Guitarrista, showman, un gran artista que desde Machagai, El Chaco, se proyectó al mundo y volvió triunfante a su país.

Como se había programado y por iniciativa de la subsecretaria de Cultura de Machagai, la Sra Flavia Calvo junto al Sr Eduardo Centurión y al intendente de la ciudad de Machagai Sr. Hector Justino Vega y su esposa Marisol apoyados por la secretaría de Cultura de la Provincia del Chaco a cargo del profesor Francisco Romero, viajamos a la provincia de El Chaco el día 19 de febrero pasado para hacer dos shows, uno en Machagai el día 20 de febrero y otro en Resistencia el día 21 del mismo mes.

Los mismos tuvieron como protagonistas a la cantante Jorgelina Alemán y al guitarrista Ricardo Péllican y durante los mismos, se proyectaron fragmentos de la película Vida con Swing, Historia de una Carta y el Idolo del Tango lo cual tuvo una gran aceptación del público.
Fueron invitados y viajaron desde Buenos Aires: India Morena Aleman (hija de Oscar) Agustina Miguez Alemán (nieta de Oscar) Juan Manuel Miguez (biznieto de Oscar) Además, viajaron el guitarrista Juan Martinez y el pianista Daniel Cossarini.

Participaron en los shows, los músicos de Resistencia, Chaco, Alejandro Ruiz en bajo y Gabriel Vignoli en batería y además, como músicos invitados: Juan Manuel Miguez (biznieto de Oscar) en guitarra, Eduardo Centurión en piano, Alejandro de Salvo de la ciudad de Tandil, en guitarra, Flavia Calvo y Lucrecia García en canto.

Es muy destacable el gran entusiasmo con que se organizó el homenaje a los 100 años del nacimiento de Oscar Alemán y como fue creciendo él interés del público. Mucha gente, entre ellos aborígenes, se acercaron a Jorgelina a contarle vivencias relacionadas con su abuelo Oscar y su madre que era aborigen de la raza Toba con mucho orgullo. Los dos shows se realizaron a sala llena y con gente parada por falta de lugar, lo cual sorprendió a los organizadores y generó expectativas para seguir realizando éste tipo de shows en el futuro en toda la provincia de El Chaco. Show en Resistencia (foto: Daniel Cossarini)
Tal vez, éste festejo, haya hecho tomar conciencia a los habitantes de la provincia de quien fue el gran maestro Oscar Alemán y sobre todo, el hecho de que era Chaqueño, cosa que mucha gente no sabía. Las autoridades de la ciudad de Machagai han determinado que el día 20 de febrero, será considerado el día de la Ciudad de Machagai y todos los años venideros se festejará de la misma manera, por un lado el aniversario de nacimiento de Oscar Alemán y por otro el día de la ciudad.

Otro hecho muy destacable es que de acuerdo a la Resolución Municipal nº 159, a partir del día 20 de febrero de 2009 se le impone el nombre de Oscar Marcelo Alemán a una importante calle de la Ciudad de Machagai. Además, en la ciudad de Resistencia, se está refaccionando y agrandando el Centro Cultural donde se realizó el show del día 21. Cuando terminen las obras, éste centro llevará el nombre de Oscar Marcelo Alemán.

Tal vez éste sea el comienzo del verdadero reconocimiento de un grande como Oscar en su país de origen. Todo parece indicar que se está empezando a tomar conciencia de la importancia que esto tiene para toda la sociedad.
