Hoogtepunt was het concert van het Rony Verbiest trio met als speciale gast T.S. Monk op slagwerk: een tribute aan de muziek van Thelonious monk sr. (Hans Koert)

This month a great album was launched, Jan. 7th 2014, you shouldn't miss ................ The US soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom rekleased her album sixteen sunsets, an album packed with fourteen ballads ........ It's an album for all those jazz fans who love, like Jane, the slow tempo repertoire .....  I grew up listening to these songs and knowing the lyrics. They were a part of my earliest listening experiences so playing them is like breathing to me. The album has more then a dozen tracks, of Jane Ira bloom's own "ballad book" and the All American Songbook, with compositions by Gershwin ( I Love you Porgy and But Not For Me), Jerome Kern ( The Way You Look Tonight)  and Kurt Weill ( My Ship). Jane Ira Bloom plays her soprano sax for over thirty years and she is a six-time winner of the Jazz Jounralist Award ......  If you like the smooth sound of the soprano csaxophone I'm sure you'll like this album: Sixteen sunsets as played by Jane Ira Bloom - Cameron Brown - Matt Wilson and Dominic Fallacaro: Jane Ira Bloom: Sixteen Sunsets

Op 7 januari 2014 verscheen de cd Sixteen sunsets door de Amerikaanse sopraansaxofoniste  Jane Ira Bloom.  Het is een cd geworden voor iedereen die van ballads houdt, want de veertien nummers zijn alle langzame stukken, geselecteerd uit haar eigen "ballad book" en het american songbook, met composities van Gershwin ( I Love you Porgy en But Not For Me), Jerome Kern ( The Way You Look Tonight)  en Kurt Weill's My Ship. Jane Ia bloom spelt al zo'n 30 jaar professioneel sopraansax en won al heel wat prijzen, waaronder zes keer de Jazz Journalists Award for soprano Saxophone .... Een must voor de liefhebber van smooth ballad jazz:  Jane Ira Bloom: Sixteen Sunsets

Toen we begin jaren negentig ( 8 februari 1992) een weekendje Amsterdam deden, liepen we op een avond, herinner ik me, over het Leidseplein. Plotseling hoorden we vanuit een café de klanken van een dixieland band en dat bleek ..... de Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band te zijn ( Chris Barber paste de naam aan in 1980 ), die bezig was een concert voor te bereiden van die avond. Ik herinner me dat ze bezig waren met de soundcheck, zodat we een ongedwongen uurtje hadden met de leden van de band. In mijn herinnering hebben we het echte concert niet bijgewoond omdat we geen kaartjes hadden. Rony Verbiest met T.S. Monk in Porgy en Bess: De muziek van Thelonious Monk .... Je haat het of je bent er helemaal weg van .... Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) had accordeonist Rony Verbiest kunnen strikken, die met zijn begeleiders en de enige echte .. zoon van ... slagwerker T.S. Monk in een volle club een ode bracht aan de muziek van the highpriest of Bebop: Thelonious Monk ..... Weer zo'n onvergetelijk concert, dat in de analen van deze kleine jazzclub, bijgeschreven kan worden ...... (Hans Koert) 

Eef van Breen en Anne Vegter debuteerden zondag 5 januari 2014 met hun Dichter des Vaderlands Tourband tijdens een mooi nieuwjaarsconcert in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) - de start van een serie concerten langs Nederlandse podia. Het publiek genoot  van een verrassend concert, waarin duidelijk werd hoe twee schijnbaar verschillende disciplines, muziek en poëzie - zich samen kunnen versterken  .......... 

Een boeiende start van (op)nieuw een veelbelovend jaar Porgy en Bess (Hans Koert)..............

Zet vier ervaren jazzmusici samen op het podium en de kans is groot dat er iets moois ontstaat. Estafest, bestaande uit violist Oene van Geel, gitarist Anton Goudsmit, pianist Mete Erker  en pianist Jeroen van Vliet bewees dit, zondag 19 januari 2014 voor een select publiek op het jazzpodium Porgy en Bess ( Terneuzen). Thirty five years  later their dream came true .... The  Mark Sherman - Bob Franceschini quintet released its debut album entitled THEM Project ....... 

It seems to me as if the best jazz albums are born during a spontaneous “gathering”, where members and guests are invited to join in …….  A year ago Matt Wilson invited piano player John Medeski, admired for his  remarkable musical instincts, as Matt explains in the liner notes of his upcoming album, an endearing spirit and deep roots in a wide range of music …. to be part of a recording session at Maggie’s Farm, January 29th, 2013.... Wie stil kan blijven zitten bij het aanhoren van de nieuwste cd van The Ploctones melde zich .. De muziek kookt en bruist. Wie de optredens van The Ploctones kent, herinnert de tomeloze energie van gitarist Anton Goudsmit en tenorsaxofonist Efraïm Trujillo en de opzwepende grooves van de ritmesectie. Mis hun nieuwste cd niet, een must-have al was het alleen al vanwege de originele hoes ..... The Ploctones:Ploc  ( Hans Koert)

If you love that funky grooving sound of the 1960s Hammond B3 Organ, you should have an ear to Kevin Coelho's  music ..... Recently his second album was releaseed, entitled Turn It Up  - a record  that was meant to have that dancing spirit, that groove-to-the-music, turn-it-up vibe. 

Antoine Boyer, een jonge Franse gitarist, verraste met eerder met zijn derde album Sita. Nu ligt zijn tweede op mijn draaitafel: Leské.  Hij is één van die gitaristen, die zijn instrument bespeelt volgens de traditie van Django Reinhardt, maar….. hij speelt totaal anders dan alle andere jeugdige gitaristen in het Django-idioom. Het is vooral zijn toon en de kalmte die hij uitstraalt, hoewel hij ook met gemak snelle loopjes beheerst. Hij heeft de meest lyrische aanpak van alle jongere gitaarspelers die ik ken: Antoine Boyer: Leské (Georg Lankester)

Recently the San Francisco-based guitarist George Cotsirilos released his third album, entitled Variations.  He is labeled as   a fluent bop-oriënted stylist who mates a sparkling tone with fleet fingered lines, harmonic ingenuity, melodic acuity and a gift for letting space  ....  A jazz-guitar trio that proofs that there is plenty of life in the mainstream guitar tradition. On the 3rd of November, 2011 the Danish jazz legend, Arne Papa Bue Jensen, passed away, 81 years old. The sad news was frontpage priority in leading Danish media, an important figure of the traditional jazz scene in Denmark had left, a successfull career as a bandleader and trombonist of the world famous Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band had ended after more than 50 years in business. - Here we also like to pay a tribute to Papa Bue and point our readers to the extensive career profile of Arne Papa Bue Jensen by Rienus Kanning published at the keepswinging blog a couple of years ago.

The most respectfull way to pay a musician a tribute is to play his or her music, thus here are three highlights from the recorded career of Arne Papa Bue Jensen uploaded at YouTube. - The first video features the audio of a live-recording made at Tivolis Koncertsal, Copenhagen 1978, the tune Just A Closer Walk is accompanied by still photos and the musicians are Arne "Papa Bue" Jensen - Trombone, Ole Stolle - Trumpet, Jørgen Svarre - Clarinet, Banjo and vocals - Bjarne "Liller" Pedersen, Jens Sølund - Bass, Knud Ryskov - Drums, Jørn "Jønne" Jensen - Piano.

During the 1960s the Papa Bue's Viking Jazz band was extreme popular in the European trad scene. In the spring of 1956 Arne Bue Jensen had founded an amateur dixieland band, which performed at the Copenhagen Montmartre Club. In the summer of 1956 the band traveled to Hamburg, where they got a gig at the New Orleans Beerbar. They made some records, which became hits. As Chris Barber had its Ice Cream and Petite Fleur, Acker Bilk his Summerset Papa Blue became immortal with Schlafe Mein Prinzchen, Schlaf' Ein, not the most jazzy tune he had in his repertoire.

The Danish trombone player and bandleader Arne Jensen, better known as Papa Bue, passed away. He was an icon of Danish jazz. Around the 1960s the trad jazz scene, with names like Acker Bilk and Chris Barber, adored Papa Bue, who made with his Vikiing Jazz Band accesible dixieland music, which became popular to the common people with hits like Schlafe Mein Prinzchen, Schlaf' Ein, not the most jazzy tune in Acker Bilk's repertoire. The Chris Barber Band, Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band, Acker Bilk's Paramount Jazz Band and our Dutch Swing College Band belong to the almost legendary dixieland formations of the second half of the XXth century.
These dixieland bands, who play in the so-called Chicago style, became popular after the second world war and a lot of dance parties in the 1950s were organized with a dixieland band on stage. In the 1970s, when I was a young adult, the dixieland bands were still playing, but had to survive, as other music styles had become more popular. In the 1970s these bands performed in venues like The Harbour Jazz Club in Rotterdam, and, as far as I remember and could verify with tickets or notes, we joined concerts of the Down Town Jazz Band (Breda 1972), The South Jazz Band (Middelburg 1973), Max's Collie's Rhythm Aces (Breda 1973), Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band (Rotterdam 1975), Wild Bill Davison and the Harbour Jazz Band (1975), Kenny Ball Jazzmen (Rotterdam 1979), the Pasadena Roof Orchestra (very famous in those days)( Rotterdam 1979) and Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band ( Rotterdam 1980 )

To be honest - I don't remember much of these concerts. I remember to have heard Chris Barber several times in concert, but I only have archived a March 1980 concert in The Doelen in Rotterdam and in 1992 in Amsterdam, I'll tell you more about it later. I must have missed some concerts, I'm sure .......Last month I found a club release of The Harbour Jazzclub/Harbours Own in Rotterdam, titled Jazz Message, edition January 1979, that announces a concert of The Chris Barber Band on Thursday the 11th of January with radio recordings for the TROS program Sesjun. The fact that I have archived this program could mean that this was one of those missing Chris Barber concerts

The Jazz Message, no more then one piece of paper, contains one article, titled The Chris Barber Band: een unieke, muzikale confrontatie ( = a unique, musical confrontation) reads that Chris Barber each year visits this Rotterdam jazz club, situated at The Weena. Chris Barber started his career as a professional in the King Oliver Band early 1950s ( Joe King Oliver passed away in 1938 ) and he started his own Chris Barber Band in 1954. In 1957 he had a smash hit with Ice Cream.
The members of the band have grown together with the Chris Barber Band, as it was in 1980, like Pat Halcox on trumpet (still active in the 2008 Chris Barber Band), John Crocker on clarinet, Johnny McCallum on the banjo, Vic Pitt on bass and Pete York on drums. And for those few laymen reading this blog, Chris Barber is the leader of the band, singer and an excellent trombone player.

When we were in Amsterdam early 1990s for a long weekend, I remember that we walked along the Leidseplein, when we heard, outside one of the café's, the sounds of a dixieland band. We popped in and found .... The Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band ( Chris Barber changed his band name mid 1979 ), preparing a concert later that evening. What a surprise. I remember that they were doing a sound check, so we could enjoy the informal preparations for the concert. As I remember we didn't join the actual concert, as we had no tickets.
Chris Barber is still active with his band. Tonight he's playing in The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield (UK). In March you can join concerts in Austria and Switserland and in April he tours along Germany; so try to join one of the concerts of this legendary band.

De Chris Barber Band, Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band, Acker Bilk's Paramount Jazz Band en onze eigen Dutch Swing College Band behoren tot de bijna legendarische dixielandformaties uit de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw.
Deze dixielandbands, die in de zgn. Chicago stijl spelen, werden populair na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en op heel wat schoolfeestjes in de jaren vijftig speelden dixielandorkestjes. In de jaren zeventig moesten ze concureren met de nieuwe popmuziek en speelden deze bands in clubs zoals de Harbour Jazz Club in Rotterdam, en, voorzover ik me kan herinneren en kan nagaan aan bewaarde kaartjes, heb ik in die dagen optredens bijgewoond van dixielandbands als de Down Town Jazz Band (Breda 1972), The South Jazz Band (Middelburg 1973), Max's Collie's Rhythm Aces (Breda 1973), Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band (Rotterdam 1975), Wild Bill Davison en de Harbour Jazz Band (1975), Kenny Ball Jazzmen (Rotterdam 1979), the Pasadena Roof Orchestra (heel populair toen) ( Rotterdam 1979) en Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band ( Rotterdam 1980).

Om eerlijk te zijn ..... ik herinner me niet zo veel meer van deze concerten. In mijn herinnering heb ik Chris Barber en zijn band verschillende keren zien en horen optreden, maar ik heb alleen bewijsmateriaal gevonden van een concert in maart 1980 in de Doelen in Rotterdam en een optreden in 1992 in Amsterdam; maar daarover later meer. Ik denk dat er nog één of twee concerten "kwijt" zijn. Afgelopen maand vond ik een uitgave van de Harbour Jazzclub/Harbours Own in Rotterdam, getiteld Jazz Message, editie januari 1979, dat een concert van de Chris Barber Band aankondigd op donderdag 11 januari met radio-opnamen voor het TROS programma Sesjun. Het feit dat ik dit blaadje bewaard heb, kan bewijzen dat ik bij dit concert geweest ben.

Het blaadje Jazz Message, niet meer dan één A4-tje, bevat een artikel, getiteld The Chris Barber Band: een unieke, muzikale confrontatie. Het vertelt dat Chris Barber elk jaar de Rotterdamse jazz club aan het Weena bezoekt. Chris Barber begon zijn carriere begin jaren vijftig in de King Oliver Band ( Joe King Oliver was daar niet meer bij - hij stierf in 1938) en hij richtte zijn eigen band op in 1954. In 1957 had hij een hit met Ice Cream.
