Jazz Festival Middelburg

The International Jazz Festival in Middelburg ( southwest part of The Netherlands), held for the first time in a new concept, had two great names in jazz scedulded on Sunday 27th of May 2007 at the inner court of the abbey in the centre of the ancient city. First of all the Philip Catherine Trio, featuring Philip Catherine on guitar, Philippe Aerts on bass and Mimi Verderame on percussion.

Philip Catherine showed that he is a great guitar player easily fascinating the audience, that came to this concert. Philip Aerts and Italian born Mimi Verderame accompanied Philip on bass and drums. In some solo pieces, Philip played with a pre-recorded accompanist on accoustic guitar ( himself ) some great duos. It was a pity, that only one hundred people joined this great concert, maybe due to the fact that the concert started at an early hour in the evening ( 7 o'clock ) or thanks to the weather forecast. Thanks Philip for this concert !!

James Carter started his concert at half past nine in the evening and found a few hundred jazz fans in front of the stage. He opened the show with a killer diller of fast notes and free-jazz licks, but turned out to be an entertaining musician who could captivate his audience with a well-considered show. The two regular accompanists of his Organ Trio are Gerald Gibbs on the hammond and Leonard King at the drums, two skilled musicians.

Especially Leonard King got the opportunity to spread out lenghtly solos on his groovy instrument, that is still very popular in jazz. James Carter left a deep impression on me playing his alto and tenor saxophones. Using circular breathing, slap tongue techniques, some times growling like a monster, but also as soft that the audience was annoyed at people talking on the far end of the court.

James Carter and his Organ Trio visibly enjoyed playing on this cosy medieval court and closed the concert with a playful encore starting with scales and dated tunes like Down By The River Side. The audience enjoyed this concert. Although the weather forecast talked about rain and showers, the weather gods were well-inclined towards the audience and the organisationus, but, sorry Tante Tuffie, the court wasn't jam-packed as we hoped, although the program and the organisation deserved so.

Het Internationaal Jazz Festival in Middelburg, voor de eerste maal volgens een nieuwe opzet, had een paar grote namen uit de jazz gecontracteerd voor zondag 27 mei 2007. De concerten werden uitgevoerd op het door middeleeuwse abdijgebouwen omsloten plein in het centrum van de oude stad. Als eerste groep trad het Philip Catherine Trio op, met Philip Catherine op gitaar, Philippe Aerts op bas en Mimi Verderame op drums.

Philip Catherine wist het publiek, dat op dit concert afgekomen was, te boeien met zijn gitaarspel, vakkundig begeleid door Philip Aerts en de in Italië geboren Mimi Verderame in de ritmesectie. Philip begeleidde zichzelf in een paar solostukken op ( vooraf opgenomen) accoustische gitaar. Het was jammer, dat slechts een honderdtal toeschouwers de moeite hadden genomen om dit concert bij te wonen, misschien door het vroege uur ( het concert begon om zeven uur) of door de weersvoorspellingen; aan het optreden van Philip Catherine en zijn mannen kan het niet gelegen hebben. Bedankt Philip voor dit optreden.

James Carter begon zijn concert om half tien met een paar honderd fans voor zich en opende het optreden met een razendsnel nummer vol free-jazz elementen, maar, gaandeweg het concert, bleek hij ook meester in de meer gematigde jazzstijlen en trakteerde het publiek op een uitgedachte show. Zijn twee vaste begeleiders van dit Organ Trio waren Gerald Gibbs op hammondorgel en Leonard King op de drums - beiden ervaren muzikanten. Vooral Leonard King speelde lang uitgesponnen solo's op zijn hammondorgel; met zijn vette geluid nog steeds populair bij een grote groep jazzliefhebbers. James Carter liet een diepe indruk achter als het gaat om de beheersing van zijn instrumenten, met name op tenorsaxofoon met technieken als circular breathing, waarbij door een bepaalde ademhalingstechniek lange riffs of tonen gemaakt kunnen worden, het slap tongue spelen, de soms bijna dierlijke geluiden, die over het plein knalden, maar ook hele zachte, bijna onhoorbare tonen, waarvan het publiek, soms muisstil, zichtbaar geërgerd door pratende mensen aan de andere kant van het plein, geen genoeg van leek te krijgen.

James Carter en zijn Organ Trio genoten zichtbaar van dit concert op dit knusse middeleeuwse plein en sloten hun concert af met een lange toegift, die begon met het uitwisselen van toonladders en afgesabbelde thema's als Down By The River Side. Het publiek genoot. Hoewel de weersvooruitzichten regen en buien voorspeld hadden bleven de weergoden de organisatie welgezind, maar het bleef jammer dat het plein, sorry Tante Tuffie, maar deels gevuld was en dat lag zeker niet aan de toegangsprijs, die heel redelijk genoemd mocht worden, aan de programmering of aan de voortreffelijke organizatie. Doorgaan zo !!

Philip Catherine

The International Jazz Festival in Middelburg (south-west part of the Netherlands), has been completely renewed this year. It is sceduled from the 26th up to the 28th of May 2007. Among the artists that will be perform are some of my favorites. Philip Catherine is one of them.

Time to play my favorite album titled Twin-House and played by Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine. On the reverse of the LP a rather outdated picture of the two guitar players. Larry Corryell and Philip Catherine played for the first together in the mid 1970s at the Montreux Jazz Festival and as that concert was a great success it was repeated at the Berlin Jazz Days in November 1976. A record producer who heard that concert immediately decided to record this duo and so he did: Twin-House was released in 1977. (Atlantic ATL 50 342)
The cover of the record is rather unusual as it looks like a newspaper, with a large advertisement in the middle. It reads:

To be SOLD - A highly important RECORDING by 2 of today's LEADING GUITARISTS of contemporary music LARRY CORYELL ( from the United States of America) and PHILIP CATHERINE ( from the Belgium Kingdom). The recording was inspired by the SPLENDID PERFORMANCE of the two Artists during the "BERLINER JAZZTAGE 1976 " and recorded a few days after at London Olympic Studios. PERFECT SOUND - HIGH QUALITY RECORDING.

Larry Coryell, born in 1943 in Galveston (Texas) plays the electric guitar and started his career in the late 1960s with Chico Hamilton and the Free Spirits. He became known for his guitar playing in the Gary Burton Quartet, a group that combined jazz with rock and country music. In the 1970s jazz-rock became important for Larry while playing in his own group Eleventh House. He recorded some remarkable duets, like the one above with Philip Catherine, but also in duo with John McLaughlin and John Scofield. Since the 1980s and onwards Larry Coryell developed as a skilled and sought after guitar player performing on all great festival all over the world. Philip Catherine was born in 1942 in London and grew up in Belgium. He started his career in music in the 1960s for the Belgian radio and with Lou Bennett. In the 1970s he played free jazz with Jean-Luc Ponty . In 1972 he studied at Berklee College of Music and played with musicians like Charlie Mariano and Jasper Van't Hof. They formed the band Pork Pie. He often performed during those years with the Danish bass player with the difficult name, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

Charles Mingus nicknamed him Young Django, what became the title of a 1979 record Philip made with Django's former violin player Stephane Grappelli. Although Catherine's playing has been inspired by Django Reinhardt most admirers of the Hot Club du France musical tradition find his music too modern, too progressive, to label Philip as a direct follower of Django Reinhardt. (I wonder: how should Django sound today if he had had the change to develop his guitar playing? )

Nowadays Philip Catherine is still very active in music. He performs with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, one of the leading orchestras of Western Europe, with Bert Joris, and with his own trio featuring Philippe Aerts and Joost Van Schaik. For me he is very strong in duo with a strong opponent, like in the album Twin-House mentioned above with Larry Coryell, but also with Bert Joris, the great Belgian trumpet player, as I heard in concert at Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( south west part of the Netherlands) in February 2003 or with the great French guitar player Sylvain Luc.

Het Internationaal Jazz Festival in Middelburg is dit jaar helemaal vernieuwd van opzet. Het wordt gehouden van 26 t/m 28 mei 2007. Eén van mijn favoriete artiesten die zondag optreden is Philip Catherine.

Tijd om mijn favoriete gitaar-LP Twin-House, gespeeld door Larry Coryell en Philip Catherine weer eens uit zijn hoes te halen. Op de achterkant van de plaat staat een heerlijk gedateerde foto van beide gitaristen. Larry Corryell en Philip Catherine speelden voor het eerst samen midden jaren zeventig op het Montreux Jazz Festival en dat was een groot succes. Dit optreden werd herhaald in november 1976 tijdens de Berlijnse Jazz Dagen. Een platenproducent, die in de zaal zat, besloot dat dit grandioze duo op plaat vastgelegd moest worden: Twin-House werd uitgebracht in 1977.( Atlantic ATL 50 342 )De hoes van de plaat is tamelijk bijzonder; het is een fragment uit een krant, met in het midden een grote advertientie:

Hoewel Philip Catherine geinspireerd werd door Django Reinhardt vinden de liefhebbers van de Hot Club du France stijl dat zijn muziek te modern is, te geavanceerd. ( Ik vraag me dan altijd in alle bescheidenheid af hoe Django's muziek geklonken zou hebben als hij zich muzikaal verder had kunnen ontwikkelen?)

Tegenwoordig is Philip Catherine nog steeds erg actief. Hij speelt met het Brussels Jazz Orchestra, één van de beste jazzorkesten van West Europa, met Bert Joris, en met zijn eigen trio ( met Philippe Aerts op bas en Joost van Schaik op drums). Voor mij is hij geweldig als hij speelt met een goede tegenspeler, zoals in het duet met Larry Coryell. Ik heb hem horen spelen in februari 2003 met Bert Joris, de grote Belgische trompettist in een concert in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen. Ook de opnamen met de Franse gitarist Sylvain Luc zijn grandioos. Ik vond een aantal filmfragmenten van concerten waarmee ik Philip Catherine's muziek wil illustreren. Geniet er van!
