Last week I heard the sad news about the death of the Finnish piano player Jarmo Savolainen. He passed away on the 11th of June, 2009. He was one of the best Finnish jazz musicians and a sought after accompanist. He had celebrated his 48th birthday on the 24th of May.
I learned about the death of Jarmo on the day that the world mourned about the death of that other musician Michael Jackson – breaking news – heads in the news papers – rumours - specials on all networks; the passing of Jarmo Savolainen compared to the death of MJ. – only noted by the Finnish news papers and Finnish networks YLE Suomi Radio: Jazzmuusikko Jarmo Savolainen kuoli sairauskohtaukseen Helsingissä 11. kesäkuuta. Hän oli 48-vuotias, syntynyt Iisalmessa 24. toukokuuta 1961. Savolainen oli yksi kansainvälisesti menestyneimmistä suomalaisista jazzmuusikoista.

Born in the centre of Finland ( Suomi) he learned to play the piano when he was a kid. He played classical piano, until he became fascinated by great keyboard players like Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. His first album as a classic piano player was with the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, but soon he decided to change the direction of his career and became a jazz piano player. Like so many jazz musician he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (US) for two years, before he left the institute. He had played with musicians like Tom Harrell, Bob Berg and Wallace Roney; all three musicians active in modern jazz for years; Bob Berg passed away December 2002.
Love to share with you a live film fragment from the start of his career ( 1979 ) with a Finnish vocalist and guitar player Liisa Tavi, who once sung at the European Song Contest for Finland and developed into a skilled bossa nova vocalist in the 1990s with a group featuring Pekka Tegelman, guitar; Jarmo Savolainen, keys; Raimo Salmiheimo, bass and Seppo Rauteva, drums. Although Jarmo is rather invisible on this pop tune you can hear him playing the keyboards.

In the late 1980s he recorded several albums in Boston, but also in New York ( Nonet – Blue Dreams – First Sight and in 1995 True Image). The rhythm section of the two latter are with Ron McClure on bass and Billy Hart on drums.

A few weeks ago I found at a sale in de Drvkkery in Middelburg, one of the best assorted book / record shops in the south west part of The Netherlands, the album True Image ( A-Records AL 73031). On the album three guests: Tim Hagans, trumpet player, David Liebman soprano sax and Karl Heinilä, a Finnish reed player on the tenor. This album contains eight Jarmo Savolainen compositions, like the title song True Image, Down The line, Inky-Pinky and Inseparable. Jarmo’s compositions are wide ranging and they offer the player a wonderful balance between loose and structured improvisational settings, Liebman writes in the liner notes. On the album two line ups. The first half contains a quintet with Tim Hagans and Karl Heinillä as guest players and the second part contains a quartet with David Liebman. This album was recorded in March 1994 in the year that Jarmo received the Georgie Award by the Finnish Jazz Federation.

In the late 1990s he often played with Scandinavian musicians like Kari Heinila, Anders Jormin and Markku Ounaskari. In our country Jarmo performed with the "other Jarmo", Jarmo Hoogendijk, thanks to his mother of Finnish blood too, which I heard in concert on trumpet in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen with Herb Geller and John Ruocco and the Rein De Graaff Trio, October 2002. Jarmo Savolainen belonged to the most important jazz musicians of Finland and was a sought after accompanist, not only for jazz sessions, but also as a classic piano soloist with orchestras like the Finnish National Opera or the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, or the Avanti Chamber Orchestra. He was member for years of the band of Pekka Pohojola, the UMO Jazz Orchestra and the Espoo Big Band.

Love to share with you a solo piano piece, titled Asperine Song, like the second fragment of this blog, recorded in Sao Paulo ( Brasil) a year ago, which shows why I’m fascinated by this great, almost unknown jazz piano player and composer.

Afgelopen week werd bekend dat op donderdag 11 juni 2009 de Finse jazzpianist Jarmo Savolainen is overleden. Jarmo was één van de meest toonaangevende muzikanten in de Finse jazzscene van dit moment en een gewild begeleider. Hij vierde onlangs op 24 mei zijn 48ste verjaardag.
Ik las, bij toeval, over zijn overlijden, op de dag dat de hele wereld rouwde bij het overlijden van die andere muzikant, Michael Jackson – breaking news – vette koppen in de krant – speculaties te over - Een half acht uur journaal en specials op de TV; het plotselinge overlijden van Jarmo Savolainen was afgelopen week alleen voorpaginanieuws in Finse kranten en op de Finse publieke omroep YLE Radio Suomi. Jazzmuusikko Jarmo Savolainen kuoli sairauskohtaukseen Helsingissä 11. kesäkuuta. Hän oli 48-vuotias, syntynyt Iisalmessa 24. toukokuuta 1961. Savolainen oli yksi kansainvälisesti menestyneimmistä suomalaisista jazzmuusikoista. Het is niet anders ………….

Jarmo Savolainen werd geboren mei 1961 in het midden van Finland en leerde als kind piano spelen, voornamelijk klassieke muziek, tot hij als negentienjarige gegrepen werd door de muziek van Chick Corea en Keith Jarrett. Zijn eerste plaat was met het Kuopio Symphony Orchestra en bevatte klassieke muziek, maar niet lang daarna besloot hij het roer om te gooien en zich te richten op de jazzmuziek. Zoals zo vele jazzmuzikanten kwam hij op het Berklee conservatorium in Boston (Verenigde Staten) terecht en studeerde daar twee jaar met musici Tom Harrell, Bob Berg en Wallace Roney; alle drie verdienden ze hun sporen op het wereldjazzpodium – Bob Berg overleed in december 2002.
Ik vond een kort live fragment van een opname uit zijn begin periode als onderdeel van een begeleidingsgroep met de Finse zangeres, gitariste Liisa Tavi, die ooit voor Finland uitgezonden werd naar het Eurovisie Songfestival en die in de jaren negentig opviel met haar bossa nova vertolkingen. Jarmo komt hier niet echt in beeld, maar is wel in dit popnummer op keyboard te horen
De begeleidingsband bestaat uit: Pekka Tegelman gitaar- Jarmo Savolainen, toetsen - Raimo Salmiheimo, bas en Seppo Rauteva, slagwerk.

Eind jaren tachtig nam hij platen op in Boston en later in New York, met titels Nonet – Blue Dreams – First Sight en in 1995 True Image. De laatste twee genoemde met Ron McClure op bas en Billy Hart op slagwerk in de ritmesectie.

Een paar weken geleden vond ik bij toeval tijdens een uitverkoop in de Drvkkery in Middelburg, één van de best gesorteerde platenzaken op het gebied van jazz in zuidwest Nederland, het album True Image ( A-Records AL 73031). Op deze plaat drie gastspelers: Tim Hagans, trompetist, David Liebman sopraansax en Karl Heinilä, een Finse rietblazer op tenor. Deze plaat bevat acht eigen composities, zoals het titelnummer True Image en verder nummers als Down The Line, Inky-Pinky en Inseparable. Jarmo’s compositions are wide ranging and they offer the player a wonderful balance between loose and structured improvisational settings ( = De composities van Jarmo zijn veelzijdig en bieden de musici een prima uitgebalanceerde omgeving, die gestructureerd is, maar een heleboel vrijheid geeft om te soleren.) schrijft Liebman op de “hoes”. Op de plaat speelt Jarmo met twee bezettingen: De eerste helft wordt gevormd door een kwintet met Tim Hagans en Karl Heinillä en in de tweede helft een kwartet met David Liebman op sopraan. De ritmesectie bestaat uit de eerder genoemde Ron McCure en Billy Hart. De plaat werd in maart 1994 opgenomen in Brooklyn in het jaar dat Jarmo geëerd werd met de Georgie Award, zeg maar de Finse Boy Edgar prijs, uitgereikt door de Finse Jazzfederatie.

Eind jaren negentig is hij steeds vaker te vinden met Scandinavische musici als Kari Heinila, Anders Jormin en Markku Ounaskari. In ons land speelt hij o.a. met die andere Jarmo, Jarmo Hoogendijk, die dankzij zijn moeder ook Fins bloed in de aderen heeft. Jarmo Hoogendijk was o.a. in oktober 2002 in Porgy en Bess ( Terneuzen) te horen met Herb Geller en John Ruocco bij het Rein de Graaff Trio. In Finland behoorde Savolainen tot de meestgewilde begeleiders, niet alleen bij jazzsessies, maar ook bij concerten en plaatopnamen van klassieke orkesten als de Finse Nationale Opera of het Finse Radio Symphony Orkest en het Avanti kamerorkest. Hij was jarenlang lid van de band van Pekka Pohojola, het UMO Jazz Orchestra en de Espoo Big Band.

Tot slot een fragment, waarin Jarmo laat zien waarom hij zo´n geweldige pianist was. Het nummer werd een jaar geleden vastgelegd op film in Sao Paolo (Brazilië) onder de titel Asperine Song.

De bijdrage van vandaag, getiteld Museumcafé Het Koekoeksnest (Nieuwvliet) lijkt op het eerste gezicht volledig buiten de onderwerpen van deze Keep Swinging blog te vallen, maar niets is minder waar. Als je bovenaan dit blog de tekst onder de kop leest kom je het zinnetje tegen ………. En verrassende projecten … en dat is wat hier aan de hand is: Een verrassend project, dat me het afgelopen weekend opnieuw mateloos boeide. Ik bezocht dit unieke museumcafé eerder het afgelopen najaar, dus was het een hernieuwde kennismaking – de fascinatie voor de inrichting was er niet minder om.
Deze bijdrage gaat over het Museumcafé Het Koekoeksnest, zo genoemd vanwege de tientallen koekoeksklokken die in de oude schuur bij elkaar gebracht zijn. Het is te vinden midden op het West Zeeuws Vlaamse platteland tussen Nieuwvliet, Cadzand en Oostburg aan de Sint-Jansdijk op zo’n 25 kilometer van de Belgische grens.

Als je de zwarte traditionele boerenschuur binnenkomt, je kunt er iets eten of drinken, valt je oog meteen op het overdadige interieur, met een enorm kitscherig caféorgel als opvallend middelpunt en tientallen instrumenten tussen de zitjes en aan de wanden. Een groot zeventiende-eeuws schip hangt aan een rails aan het plafond en draait elk uur zijn rondje. Het caféorgel, genaamd Het Koekoeksjonk speelt een mix van populaire nummers uit de jaren zestig, circusmuziek. musette en die typische dansmuziek, zoals dat eertijds gespeeld werd door grote Mortierorgels in Vlaamse kroegen.

Het deed me denken aan de muziek van De Wapiti’s, een gelegenheidsband, die bestaat uit muzikanten bekend van de Beau Hunks projecten, zoals Menno daams, Leo Van Oostrom, Ton Van Bergeyk, Theo Pieterse, Gert-Jan Blom en Joost van Son op accordeon) zoals ze dat in 1995 vastlegden op de CD “Je t’ aime encore plus”. (VPRO Eigenwijs EW 9520).

Het protserige orgel bevat ronddansende trollen en roffelende trommeltjes en langs de muren spelen tientallen instrumenten, geautomatiseerd, mee met de muziek: trommels, accordeons, een kerkorgel, Caribische steeldrums, een pianola, een xylofoon, violen en zelfs een banjo.

Al deze instrumenten worden aangedreven door ………. stofzuigers en zijn ontworpen en gebouwd door Ronald Spiessens uit Boerenhol ( een tiental huizen langs de weg van Groede naar Breskens), die in het dagelijks leven kunstenaar en decorschilder is en onder andere verantwoordelijk is voor de schitterende wandschilderingen. Het museumcafé Het Koekoeksnest runt hij samen met Ingrid van Hee, die de vele koekoeksklokken boven het orgel bij elkaar bracht.

Als je het museumcafé bezoekt word je als vanzelf gefascineerd door de muziek, die als een doorlopende show van “mechanische” instrumenten, alle aandacht trekt; door de jaren vijftig jukebox (The Sheik of Araby door de Jonston Brothers (sic), de pianola’s uit de jaren twintig, de tientallen pianorollen en de oude grammofoons.

In april 2009 was Ronald Spiessens met zijn geautomatiseerde instrumenten één van de onderwerpen in het programma Man Bijt Hond, het populaire NCRV serie, dat mensen portretteert die door hun passies buiten de gangbare paden treden. Mocht je in de buurt zijn ( je raakt niet zomaar per ongeluk in deze uithoek van Nederland verzeild ) bezoek dan eens dit museumcafé, waarachter binnenkort een landbouwmuseum moet komen met o.a. een Cadzandse stijlkamer – één ding is nu al zeker en vast …….. het Koekoeksnest zal je verrassen.

The contribution for today seems a bit outside the scope of this Keep Swinging blog, but if you read the header of the blog, you’ll agree that this subject Museum Café Het Koekoeksnest ( = The Cuckoo Nest) forms a perfect match with this blog: ……….. and other music projects that surprise me……….. and the Cuckoo Nest did do so!!
In fact I became fascinated by this unique place in the fall of 2008 when I visited the place for the very first time and last weekend I could show the place to some friends. We’re talking about the Museum Café Het Koekoeksnest, which can be translated as The Cuckoo Nest. This place was called Het Koekoeksnest because of the numerous cuckoo clocks that are collected into the old barn, situated between Nieuwvliet, Nieuwvliet-Bad and Cadzand along the Sint Jansdijk in the far south west part of The Netherlands, about 25 kilometers north from the Belgian border ( and about 50 kilometers north from Bruges).

When you visit the barn, where you can have a drink and a light meal, you’ll stare yours eyes out on the design of the interior – the enormous kitschy café organ and numerous instruments along the walls. The café organ, named Het Koekoeksjonk ( = Jonk means Young), plays its music, a mix of popular tunes, circus music, organ- and dance music. so typically for the Belgian (Flemish) cafés in the last century, where giant mechanic organs, known as Mortier-organs, entertained the clientele, with some troll-like dolls dancing on the music.

It remembered me to an album by The Wapiti’s, titled “Je t’ aime encore plus”. (VPRO Eigenwijs EW 9520) which contains “Belgian” music. These Wapiti’s are, in fact, musicians that played in bands like the Beau Hunks, the well known group that rerecorded the Laurel and Hardy sound tracks. The members of the Wapiti’s are: Menno Daams, Leo Van Oostrom, Ton Van Bergeyk, Theo Pieterse, Gert-Jan Blom and Joost Van Son on the accordion.

Along the walls and between the sit downs dozens of instruments that make its music fully automatically: drums, accordions, a church organ, steel drums, a piano, a xylophone and even a banjo.

All these “automatic” are driven by ………. vacuum cleaners and designed and build by Ronald Spiessens from Boerenhol ( a hamlet along the road between Groede and Breskens) who is, for a living, a painter of sceneries and sign boards. He collected hundreds of objects now displayed in his museum café Het Koekoeksnest, which he runs with Ingrid van Hee, who collected the cuckoo-clocks.

As fascinated by mechanical instruments he “computerized” a show of varied music styles to entertain the visitors of the museum. And, to be honest, even if you have seen it a dozen times before; it still fascinates. I enjoyed the 1950s jukebox, the 1920s pianola’s with dozens of old piano rolls and the 78rpm gramophones.

Within a few years they hope to open a Museum of Agriculture just behind the museum café, with interiors from West Zeeuws Vlaanderen.

In April 2009 Ronald Spiessens was one of the subjects in the national Dutch TV program Man Bijt Hond, a popular program that shows people with an eccentric passion. Enjoy a fragment of the Uitzendinggemist site.

If you happen to be around, in Ghent, Knokke or Bruges ( in Flanders) or as a tourist in Middelburg, Veere or Flushing ( the Dutch province of Zeeland ( the Netherlands)), try to organize a visit to this little musical spot in the middle of the open landscape in Western Zeeuws Vlaanderen and I’ll guaranty you: you’ll be surprised !

Last week the US born saxophone player, Charlie Mariano, who lived in Cologne for years, passed away. He was 85 years old.

His 85th birthday, was celebrated in November 2008 at the Theaterhaus in Stuttgart with a concert by some of his friends, directed by Mike Herting, like Philip Catherine, the Belgian guitar player, Wolfgang Dauner, piano player, Wolfgang Haffner drums and the two Dutch jazz musicians, respectively on trumpet and piano, Ack Van Rooyen and Jasper Van’t Hof. It would become one of his last public performances.

Charlie Mariano studied late 1940s at the Berklee School of Music and played in and around his native hometown Boston with musicians like Jaki Byard, Sam Rivers and Quincy Jones. Early 1950s he impressed on the alto saxophone playing in the style of Charlie Parker, but soon he developed his own style on his instruments. He played in the Stan Kenton Band and played with great west coast musicians like Frank Rosolino, the trombone player and Shelly Manne. Late 1959 he married Chinese born piano player Toshiko Akiyoshi, who is a charming piano player, influenced by Bud Powell. I heard her once in a solo concert, December 2001, at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen ( The Netherlands) and talked to hear for a while. Later, in 1970, she married Lew Tabackin.
He became a teacher at the Berklee School of Music himself for almost six years. Making this blog, I feel similarity in his career with another alto saxophone player, Lee Konitz. Charlie Mariano is, like Lee Konitz, a saxophone and flute player that constantly developed his music and inserted foreign elements into his style of music, like influences from Indian music. One of the instruments he learned to play was the Nadaswaram, a kind of South Indian oboe and studied several moments in India the music of this continent.

Since the 1970s he lived in Europe and performed with musicians like Jasper Van’t Hof and Philip Catherine.

In Europe Charlie found a climate where he could develop his music with foreign elements from the Western and Eastern cultures, improvisation with African voices, the Oud ( an Arab string instrument), the Darabouka ( a kind of drum from the Middle East) and the baritone guitar. This kind of music made, that he was only known for his music to a selected public and I heard him playing for the very first time, on the 2001 album, titled Brutto Tempo, with Jasper Van’t Hof and Steve Swallow.

I love to finish with a quote, part of an entry I found in the Rough Guide to Jazz, as written by Ian Carr that reads: Mariano’s profound interest in other musical cultures has broadened and deepened his vision, and his greatest work has been done since he reached fifty. In his later compositions, his solos are often quite extraordinary – marmoreally sculpted, every note telling and every note meant, his soprano sand alto sound projecting a powerful, almost anguished, lyricism, as if the music were being wrong out of him.

Charlie Mariano passed away in a Cologne hospital the 16th of July 2009.
