Graham Paige

In our small village in the southwest part of The Netherlands we do have a second-hand shop, la Belle Epoque, which has some LPs for sale. Now-and-then I visit it and hope to find some additions for my collection. Normally without any results; most LPs are from the series Alle Dertien Goed, ..... so Dutch readers will understand what kind of albums you can find. But ..... last week I found out there were some 78rpms - in fact five species, all but one large 30 cm Telefunken records with classical music and one ..... One Victor Special Record, a one-sided shellac recording that seemed to me something special.

At home I played this record, which only has music on one side, and it contains a march with a vocal quartet.
Thanks to some research and the help of Sam, Royal, David and Michael from the 78-L online list I could find some more information about that record. Thanks for the help ...

Victor Orchestra with Male Quartet

GRAHAM-PAIGE - March (Earl Donegan - Arthur Pryor) - 41289-3

On the reverse no recording, but the name Victor in giant letters.

I learned that the vocal quartet, in fact the Revellers, contained James Melton, Elliott Shaw, Lewis James and Wilford Glenn. I found a fragment of the 1931 tune Lady Play Your Mandoline in which you can hear the Revellers sing.

The record itself was a promo-record for the new Graham-Paige automobiles and this record was presented to the Legion, the Graham-Paige dealers, who labeled themselves as The Legion. In fact the song on the record was probably sung at dealers meetings. The complete title of the tune is Graham-Paige Legion March, but as this record, which sold 70,000 copies, had to be distributed to potential customers of the automobiles, the tune came on the label as GRAHAM-PAIGE - March.
Graham-Paige Automobiles were produced between 1927 and the mid 1940s which means that in 1927, when this record was made, Graham-Paige was a new brand for automobiles.

The music was made by Arthur Pryor, a well known composer and arranger, for bands like Sousa's, became known for the tune The Whistler and His Dog. The words sung by The Revellers were by Earl C. Donegan. We don't know what musicians were in the Victor Orchestra, but the conductor must have been Nat Shilkret, the musicial director for Victor Talking Machine - Camden company

To give you an idea to the music played by Nat Shilkret and his Victor Orchestra I found this tune: There's Something Nice About Everyone, But There's Everything Nice About You from April 1927.

I found a great example of a Graham-Paige Automobiles on a 1931 picture, with the car of Dokter Sinninghe Damsté, GP from Friesland one of the northern regions of The Netherlands. Beside the car his private driver: mister Ykema.

Isn't that great to find such a nice collector's item in your own place?

In ons dorp in Zeeland hebben we in de Dorpsstraat een tweedehands winkeltje, La Belle Epoque, waar ze o.a. oude LPs te koop hebben. Af-en-toe steek ik er mijn neus naar binnen in de hoop er wat aanvullingen voor mijn verzameling te vinden, maar meestal vind ik in de bakken alleen platen van het kaliber Alle Dertien Goed ...... ( = Alle Dertien (niet) Goed) Afgelopen week ontdekte ik ook een paar 78-toeren platen - vijf in totaal, allemaal klassieke muziek bevattende dertig centimeter schellak Telefunkenplaten en ook een "gewone" ..... Victor Special Record - Nou gewoon? Deze was maar aan één kant bespeelbaar, dus dat moest wel iets bijzonders zijn.

Thuis heb ik de plaat afgedraaid en hij bevatte een dansorkest met een mars en een zangkwartet. Dankzij wat onderzoek en hulp van Sam, Royal, David en Michael op de 78-toeren Online Nieuwslijst lukte het de discografische gegevens van de plaat te achterhalen. Bedankt voor de info !! Ik ontdekte dat het zangkwartet in feite The Revellers waren met James Melton, Elliott Shaw, Lewis James en Wilford Glenn.

Hoe dit zanggroepje, The Revellers, klonk vind je in onderstaand fragment uit 1931 in het nummer Lady Play Your Mandoline.

Een Graham-Paige dealer.

De plaat zelf is een promotieplaat voor potentiële kopers van de Graham-Paige automobiel en deze gramofoonplaat werd aageboden aan het Legion, vrij vertaald het Legioen, maar in feite de dealers. Het lied werd bijvoorbeeld gezongen op dealer-bijeenkomsten en eigenlijk is de complete titel: Graham-Paige Legion March, maar op de plaat, waarvan er 70.000 over de toonbank gingen, is dat woord Legion weggelaten. Graham-Paige automobielen werden overigens gemaakt tussen 1927 en midden jaren veertig, dus toen de plaat werd uitgebracht was het merk nog tameijk nieuw.

De muziek was gecomponeerd door Arthur Pryor, een bekend componist en arrangeur, die ook werkte voor de band van Sousa en bijvoorbeeld bekend werd met het nummer The Whistler and His Dog. De tekst van het lied, gezongen door The Revellers werd gemaakt door Earl C. Donegan. De bandleden van het Victor-orkest kennen we niet, het was een studio-orkest met steeds wisselende namen, maar de leider en dirigent zal ongetwijfeld Nat Shilkret zijn geweest, toendertijd de musicial director bij Victor Talking Machine - Camden.

Als je wilt weten hoe het Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra klonk, dan heb ik hier een dansnummer getiteld There Is Something Nice About Everyone, But There Is Everything Nice About You uit april 1927.

Ik vond een mooie foto van een Graham-Paige Automobiel uit 1931 met de automobiel van dokter Sinninghe Damsté, huisarts ergens in Friesland. Naast de auto staat zijn privéchauffeur Ykema. Zo kan een onschuldig bezoekje aan een tweedehands winkeltje toch leuke dingen opleveren - een collector's item.
