Brew Moore Fantasy

A half year ago I told you in this daily Keep swinging web log that I found a Brew Moore LP on the Vocalion label. That LP happened to be a 1964 reissue of a 1956 Fantasy album. It was Brew Moore's first Fantasy album. Some weeks ago I found his second one ( Fantasy OJC-049) !!
Brew Moore is, for a lot of jazz collectors, a near mythical figure. I told about that in a previously Brew Moore contribution. Around 1955 he lived at the West Coast of the States in San Francisco, not the best place for a jazz musician without work. If he had lived in LA he might have found work at the film studios. Now, in San Francisco he only could jam in places like The Cellar and The Tropics where he played with Harold Wylie on tenor, Dickie Mills a trumpet player, Johnny Marabuto at the keys, bass player Max Hartstein and drummer Gus Gustafson.
Their first Fantasy record was recorded August 1955 and early1956 and now in my collection as Vocalion LAE 564 The second Fantasy album, Brew made some more Fantasy recordings as a sidemen with Cal Tjader, has six tunes. One of the tunes, Dues Blues, features Cal Tjader. 
The recording session was made on the 5th of November 1957, election day. Although election day, in California and other US states, means that it is not allowed to sell alcohol. two cases of ale were in the studio at hand. Some names of the tunes have a liitle story, according to the liner notes: Nancy With The Laughing Face is of course a standard jazz tune, but, no coincidence I guess, Nancy was also the name of Brew Moore's wife - Rhode Island Red was named after a character on a West Coast children program Fireman Frank and John Marabuto's youngest kid loved to see that program - Marna Loves was named after Brew's daughter - Pat's Batch refers to Patrick Henry, a popular disc jockey.

In San Francisco speelde hij in clubs als The Cellar en The Tropics waar hij een vast groepje musici om zich heen verzameld had, zoals Harold Wylie, die ook tenor speelde, Dickie Mills een trompettist, Johnny Marabuto pianist, bassist Max Hartstein en drummer Gus Gustafson.
Hun eerste Fantasy record werd opgenomen in August 1955 en begin 1956 en heb ik dus sinds een half jaar als Vocalion LAE 564 in mijn verzameling. De tweede Fantasy plaat, Brew speelde wel als sideman mee op een aantal Cal Tjader Fantasy albums, bevat zes titels. Pp één van die titels, Dues Blues, speelt Cal Tjader mee. Deze opnamen werden gemaakt op 5 november 1957, de dag van de verkiezingen. Op een verkiezingsdag mag er geen alcohol verkocht worden in Californië, maar desondanks stonden er twee kratten bier in de studio. Een aantal titels worden op de hoes verklaard: Nancy With The Laughing Face is natuurlijk een standard, maar, niet toevallig, Bréw's echtgenote heette ook Nancy; - Rhode Island Red werd genoemd naar een karakter uit een televisieprogramma voor kinderen met daarin Fireman Frank, brandweerman Frank en John Marabuto's jongste kind was daar een fan van; - Marna Loves werd genoemd naar Brew's dochter Marna en Pat's Batch refeeert aan Patrick Henry een populaire disc jockey.
