Big John Patton

Big John Patton (only five feet-eleven inches - 180 pounds) is one of the less known organ players. He made several records for Blue Note, most of them no longer available.
I found the album Let 'em Roll( Blue Note 789795 ). The John Patton Quartet contains Grant Green on guitar, John Patton on organ, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Otis Finch on drums.
Patton is the most danceable and funky organ player of Blue Note and sure not an innovator. Some critics praise this album to the skies, others reduce it to a record enjoyable enough as background or party music. It didn't impress me really, although Hutcherson and Green of course are both skilled musicians.
The tradition of organ players has its roots in soul music. Although Fats Waller already made some famous (pipe) organ solos in the 1930s, the first real innovator on the Hammond organ was of course Jimmy Smith. His groovy sound is for me still the ultimate way a Hammond organ should sound. John Patton is one of his successors in the 1960s, together with Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff and Lonnie Smith.
John Patton died in 2002.

Big John Patton (slechts 1,60 m groot en 90 kg. zwaar) is één van de minder bekende organisten. Hij maakte verschillende opnamen voor Blue Note, waarvan de meeste (nog) niet heruitgebracht zijn.
Ik vond de plaat Let 'em Roll uit 1965 ( Blue Note 789795). Het Big John Patton Quartet bevat Grant Green op gitaar, John Patton op orgel, Bobby Hutcherson op vibrafoon en Otis Finch op drums.
Patton is een Hammond organist, die op zijn Blue note platen, naar men zegt, de meest dansbare en funky jazz maakt. Hij is zeker geen vernieuwer. Sommigen hemelen deze plaat hoog op en anderen noemen het prima geschikt als achtergrond muziek of voor bij een feestje. De plaat maakte op mij in ieder geval niet veel indruk, hoewel Hutcherson en Green uiteraard ervaren musici zijn.
De traditie van het orgel-in-de-jazz heeft zijn wortels in de soul muziek. Hoewel Fats Waller al in de jaren dertig zijn beroemde (pijp)orgelsolos maakte, is

john patton geen vernieuwer!!!!!! Je weet niet wat je zegt....Luister naar zijn latere blue note lp's...Hij is zeker anders dan de standaard soul-jazz organists..en speelt in een stijl ergens tussen larry young en jimmy smith
