Roberta Gambarini in Porgy en Bess

The Roberta Gambarini Quartet performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of The Netherlands) on Saturday the 6th of October 2007 as a late birthday present for its 50th birthday April 2007

Roberta Gambarini visited the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club with her Quartet, featuring Kirk Lightsey at the piano, Giorgios Antoniou on the bass and Douglas Sides at the drums.

Roberta Gambarini needs no further introduction. She proved during the concert that she is a singer at a very high level. With her voice, her timing and her personality she belongs to the few best in the world in jazz singing. She's, beyond doubt, my most favorite singer.

Roberta sang several standards and ballads, like It Don't Mean A Thing, the great No More Blues (Chega de Saudade) composed by Jobim, Daydream and Billie Holiday's Good Morning Heartache. She showed that she is a great improviser and scat singer in On The Sunny Side Of The Street, imitating with her voice the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie and the saxophone solos of Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins.
It was a pity that Kirk Lightsey, a piano player with a great career, draw a lot of attention with his jokes. His piano playing was a bit sloppy, maybe due to the fact that this concert was his second and last one in this small tour.

Both Giorgios Antoniou ( ever seen a left hand bass player?) and Douglas Sides happened to be skilled musicians. A great late jubilee concert, that closed the Porgy en Bess jubilee celebrations due to its 50th birthday. Thanks Porgy en Bes for these great jubilee concerts !

Het Roberta Gambarini Quartet speelde op zaterdag 6 oktober 2007 in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen als een verlaat verjaardagscadeau voor haar trouwe bezoekers; Porgy en Bess vierde dit voorjaar haar vijftigjarig bestaan.

Roberta Gambarini bezocht Porgy en Bess met haar kwartet, dat bestond uit Kirk Lightsey aan de piano, Giorgios Antoniou op bas en Douglas Sides op slagwerk.

Roberta Gambarini behoeft geen verdere introductie. Ze bewees weer eens, tijdens het concert, dat haar optredens van een hoog gehalte zijn. Met haar stem, haar timing en haar uitstraling behoort ze tot de beste jazzzangeressen van de wereld. Ze is, buiten twijfel, mijn meest favoriete zangeres.

Roberta zong verschillende standards en ballads, zoals It Don't Mean A Thing, het schitterende No More Blues ( Chega de Saudade) gecomponeerd door Jobim, Daydream en Billie Holiday's Good Morning Heart Ache. Ze liet zien dat ze ook een meester-improvisator is in scat in het nummer On The Sunny Side Of The Street, waarin ze met haar stem de trompetpartij van Dizzy Gillespie en de saxofoonsolo's van Sonny Stitt en Sonny Rollins noot-voor-noot na zong. Klasse!!
Jammergenoeg trok Kirk Lightsey, een pianist met een grote carriere, veel aandacht met zijn grappen en grollen en daardoor werd zijn pianospel ietwat slordig, misschien omdat dit zijn tweede en laatste optreden was met Roberta Gambarini in deze korte tournee, waarbij ze ook de Azoren aandeed.

Zowel Giorgios Antoniou ( ooit een linkshandige bassist gezien?) als Douglas Sides, die stoïcijns op zijn drum zat te meppen, bleken ervaren musici, die een gedegen basis neerlegden. Een mooi jubileum slotconcert, dat officieus de vieringen van het vijftigjarig bestaan van Porgy en Bess afsloot. Bedankt mensen voor het mooie jaar !!

Who's Roberta Gambarini? Don't ask the average jazz fan, as few people will be able to give an answer. She is one of the greatest jazz vocalist that sing in the tradition of the great: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. Her style is really special; her timing, her warm voice and the way she scats and improvises are unsurpassed. Maybe she's unknown because she never made records. A year ago, her debut album was released: Easy To Love. I haven't heard it yet, but I hope to have it in the near futur. Up to now I am very happy to have a live registration of a 2003 concert, recorded at the International Jazzfestival of Bern ( Switserland) and broadcasted by Swiss radio.

Roberta Gambarini, Italian born, became a jazz singer when she was 17 years old. She sung in Milan jazz clubs. She became known in the Italian scene as a very talented jazz vocalist. In the late 1990s she moved to the States and started a study at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She became known due to a third price in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition and since that time, she performed with great names like Slide Hampton, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, the late Michael Brecker and many others. She plays all over the world at all kinds of festivals and clubs.

On Satuday evening the 6th of October 2007 Roberta Gambarini will perform in Porgy en Bess Jazz Club at the Noordstraat in Terneuzen ( south west part of the Netherlands). Her quartet features herself on vocal, Kirk Lightsey at the piano, Giorgios Antoniou at the bass and Douglas Sides on drums. For me it is the second time she will be on stage at Porgy en Bess. Her first appearance was November 2003 with Jimmy Woode on bass ( he passed away some years ago), David Gazarov at the piano and Steve Williams on drums. Kirk Lightsey, who will accompany Roberta at the piano Saturday, is a skilled musician known from his cooperation with Dexter Gordon in the early 1980s. I'm anxious to hear him play at Porgy en Bess: 21:00 hrs.

Wie is Roberta Gambarini? Vraagt het niet de eerste de beste jazzfan die je tegenkomt; tien tegen één dat ze het antwoord schuldig moeten blijven. Ik zal het maar verklappen: ze is één van de beste jazzzangeressen van dit moment. Ze zingt in de traditie van de groten zoals Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughan en Carmen McRae. Ze heeft een warme stem, een fantastische timing en de manier waarop ze improviseert en scat is onovertroffen. Misschien is ze relatief onbekend omdat haar platen niet in de Jazzism top 25 staan tussen Katie Melua en Amy Winehouse, maar dat ligt aan het feit dat ze eigenlijk geen platen maakt. Haar eerste plaat, Easy To Love, kwam pas een jaar geleden uit, terwijl ze toch al jarenlang actief is. Die plaat heb ik nog niet gehoord; tot nu toe moet ik het doen met een schitterende live-registratie uit 2003 van het International Jazzfestival van Bern ( Zwitserland), en uitgezonden door de Zwitserse radio.

Roberta Gambarini, geboren in Italië, ging jazz zingen op haar zeventiende. Ze zong in clubs in Milaan en al snel werd ze overal in Italië gevraagd als een talentvolle jazzzangeres. Eind jaren negentig verhuisde ze naar Amerika en begon een studie aan het New England Conservatorium van Boston. Ze won al snel de derde prijs in de Internationale Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal competitie, die haar bekendheid opleverde en sinds die tijd heeft ze met alle groten opgetreden, zoals Slide Hampton, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter en de onlangs overleden Michael Brecker. Ze speelt nu in clubs en festivals overal op de wereld.

Op zaterdagavond 6 oktober 2007 zal Roberta Gambarini optreden in Porgy en Bess aan de Noordstraat in Terneuzen. Haar kwartet bestaat uit Kirk Lightsey aan de piano, Giorgios Antoniou aan de bas en Douglas Sides op drums. Voor mij is het de tweede keer dat ze in Porgy en Bess optreedt. Eerder stond ze op het kleine podium in november 2003 met Jimmy Woode op bas (onlangs overleden), David Gazarov aan de piano en Steve Williams op slagwerk. Kirk Lightsey, die op 6 oktober achter de vleugel zit, is een ervaren pianist, die zijn sporen verdiend heeft bij o.a. Dexter Gordon in de vroege jaren tachtig. Ik ben nieuwsgierig hem te zien en horen spelen.
